Coach Matthew Mitchell and the UK women’s basketball team suffers their first loss of the season 92-83 to the No. 3 Fighting Irish.

UK’s Samantha Drake had a career high 21 points and A’dia Mathies added 17 points but the Irish proved to be too much. Natalie Novosel’s 23 points led five Irish women in double figures, Skylar Diggins had a double-double with 16 points and 11 assists.

Mathies, the ‘Cats leading scorer on the season, fouled out of the game with about seven minutes to go and the team could never recover. The Irish scored 11 unanswered points and cruised to a victory. The Fighting Irish get their revenge after an 81-76 loss to the Wildcats last season in Memorial Coliseum.

One positive is that sophomore and UConn transfer Samarie Walker made her Wildcat debut. She had a strong first outing, contributing 7 points and 7 rebounds. The Wildcats next take on Samford University, December 21st at Memorial Coliseum.

I love watching these ladies play. They remind me of the pitino teams of the 1990’s.

I’m a wildcat fan but live in south bend and have been going to the women’s games for 11 years now. Kentucky is good and I wouldn’t be shocked to see them in the four four this year. Not too many teams will have a one point lead with under 7 minutes left in the game in that building. In fact UCONN probably won’t this year either.

It hurts to lose to anything with a connection to Digger Phelps. He is probably the most embarassing thing in Catholic history.

This game was lost because ND was more used to the situation. We are new to this high level of basketball. I think this team will be fine and has a great chance to win it all this year. Being on the road at a top team we showed nerves with missing layups badly. Still they came back and stayed in the game till Mathies fouled out. Coach Mitchell and the LADY KATS are awesome. By the way tune into Coach Mitchell’s tv show on Sundays, this guy is hilarious in addition to being a great coach.

Losing to a KY (Lexington) native who chose to play elsewhere always hurts. Especially when they lead the other team in points. Kinda reminds me of Chris Lofton (except I bet KY recruited Novosel).
