In a game that saw the Kentucky bench sanitized and a jersey changed after a spell of vomiting, Matthew Mitchell and the ladies of the UK Hoops squad took down Dayton 84-70 to advance to the Sweet 16Adia Mathies was absolutely amazing tonight in Queens, NY, dropping 34 points. Samarie Walker grabbed 7 rebounds and unloaded approximately one gallon of puke into the trashcan.

Absolutely great to see this team take the next step towards a Final Four appearance. Also, I am ecstatic to have someone to cheer for other than Florida Gulf Coast. The womens team plays Delaware on March 30th next in the Sweet 16. Matt and Drew will be heading to Bridgeport, CT for the very first time to hopefully catch another UK Hoops victory.

They say everybody loves a winner. If this team wins another game or not (I think they’re good for a few more) they’re champions in my book. Great season and more to come. GO HOOPS!

I”m not a huge women’s bball fan (it just looks odd to me, used to the men’s game) but you know I don’t run a Kentucky sports site. They need to get some major coverage and a show devoted to them. They are just one step away from being year to year elite.

11 – They have a show devoted to them, “The Matthew Mitchell Show”. It has fans from all over the country. It is on WKYT in Lexington and on Fox Sports South. Reruns can also be seen on the UKAthletics website.

I was around when they started “girls” basketball back up in the mid seventies. To say that quality of play has gone way up is an understatement. These high school girls were former cheerleaders who basically knew very little about the game. The games were painful to watch. Watching UK women play is a thing of beauty for me. They press and push the ball for 40 minutes. I would love to see our guys have the hustle and heart that these young ladies have. Hopefully next year old mens team will have enough depth that we can do some different things as far as pressing and fast breaking. This years mens team was more painful to watch than those first couple of years of girls games back in the 70’s.
