Congrats to UK Hoops assistant coach Matt Insell, who has accepted the job as the head coach at Ole Miss. Insell has been an assistant under Matthew Mitchell for five seasons, and was primarily in charge of recruiting and guard development. Insell helped bring in most of Kentucky’s top players over the last few years and while losing him will be a huge blow to the program, it is a major step up for him and his career.
Insell will stay with UK Hoops through its NCAA run before heading down to Oxford to start his position with Ole Miss. He released a statement thanking Mitchell and the Big Blue Nation for his time at UK:
“I want to thank Matthew Mitchell and the University of Kentucky for allowing me to be a part of the Big Blue Nation for the past five years. I am thankful to all the players I’ve had the pleasure of coaching and they will always hold a special place in my heart. I am committed to finishing my job at Kentucky on a high note as we prepare to take the floor in the Sweet 16 on Saturday.”
Mitchell also spoke glowingly of Insell and his contributions to the program:
“We will forever grateful to Coach Insell’s contribution to our program. We have seen significant growth in Kentucky women’s basketball since he’s been here and he’s been a huge part of our success. We are sad to see him go but that doesn’t compare to the joy we have for him reaching his dream of being a head coach. Not only has he been a fantastic coach for Kentucky he has become a member of our family, and Jenna and I are thankful for the impact he’s had on our lives. Mississippi is extremely fortunate to hire someone of Matt’s talent and tremendous work ethic.”
