UK Football self-reported two minor violations by former staff members

An open records request by the Herald-Leader’s Jen Smith may have unearthed the reasoning behind the late-summer resignation of David Armstrong, the former director of football administration under Joker Phillips.

The school self-reported two secondary violations by Armstrong during his year-and-a-half tenure at UK, one involving former defensive line coach David Turner. On May 27th, the two visited five recruits at the University Inn before the start of a one-day camp. The visit took place during the recruiting quiet period, and because the hotel is technically “adjacent” to campus and not on-campus like Armstrong and Turner believed, it was a violation. The University reported it after discovering the mix-up and the two staff members were issued letters of admonishment and the program had to count that contact as one of its permissible contacts for those prospects, one of which was declared ineligible for competition at UK.

Armstrong’s other violation occurred on December 7th, 2011 when he used the ribbon boards at Commonwealth Stadium for a presentation during a recruiting visit. Apparently Armstrong had already been told by the UK Compliance staff that only the scoreboard could be used during the visit, not the ribbon boards, per NCAA rules.

Minor stuff, but it does shed some light onto why Armstrong resigned so abruptly. Also, the NCAA’s absurd rules…what’s next? Recruits can use urinals but not the toilets? Can have Dippin Dots but not Rupp’s infamous soft serve? SMH…

You can use a scoreboard but not a ribbon board during a recruiting visit? That’s the most awesomely insane and pointless rule i’ve ever heard of, keep up the great work NCAA.

Great. We self-report when we use ribbon boards, and UL hires a known cheater that looks like is gonna go Scott free on a NCAA screw-up.
Anybody else seeing an ‘uneven playing field’ here?
I’m sure the LHL will paste this on the front page while the Cardinal Journal says ” Move on,nothing to see here” about the Hurtt saga.

Wait, I’m confused. Although I’ve never had the soft-serve at Rupp, I thought it was supposed to be all-world. “Infamous” makes me think it isn’t. Is it, or is it not worthy of waiting in such ridiculous lines?

3, it would be funny. What is said in these meetings? How do you come to a conclusion that “ribbon boards” may give someone an unfair advantage?

How can we have possible cheated in football and be so dam bad. Most schools cheat but are usually benefitted from it. I dont mind cheating and recuriting thugs as long as we can win some games and not get caught at it. Heck every one else seems to.

All of this speculation about everyone getting away with the Miami scandal is rampant speculation at this point. Shapiro’s lawyer will probably face some bar discipline and maybe even sanctions from the U.S. District Court. Shapiro also has a case against his own lawyer. Frank Haith, Clint (butt)Hurtt, and anyone else involved in the Miami scandal has nothing on the NCAA.

“All the schools in my top three were great schools. I respect them all and they have great programs and great fans, but seeing the ribbon scoreboard lit up during my recruiting visit really put Kentucky over the top. Once I saw that, I knew UK was the place for me.”

Great I just got here and here comes the Death Penalty. BTW the recruit that was ruled ineligable was ROBERT NKEMDICHE and he was just about to sign on the dotted line. Oh well maybe next year.

The NCAA has better things to do than worry about these minor violations… investigating themselves.

if i had only known UK had a ribbon board, I would not have signed with USC. I am going to see if I can get out of it.

This hogwash just goes to show what the media knows or does not know. This is insulting to David. FYI, the ship was sinking last year. Hellllloooo, 2-10. Leave while you can. You sit at home writing trash. Get away from your dang computers and get on campus and observe what is going on at practices.

Just really goes to show the incompetence of the last staff. No wonder we were so bad. Armstrong was like Consuela on Family Guy.

UK: “Mr. Armstrong, you can use the scoreboard on a recruiting visit but not the ribbon boards.”

Armstrong: “Nooo, noooo, I use ribbon boards.”

UK: “Mr. Armstrong, you can’t do that. It’s a violation of NCAA rules.”

Armstrong: “Noooo, nooo, i use them anyway.”

Remember when asked about breaking NCAA rules Jim Calhoun said he was sure he had, because of how many crazy rules the NCAA had. I think he might have even said the rules book was about 100 pages.

David did a great job at UK in his 1.5 years. Last years freshman class is one of the best in years for UK football. Compliance is the problem at UK… They still aren’t over the Mumme years and will continue to hold the program hostage until Mitch sees what is going on in the office down the hall. NCAA rules state “The use of (Video Board is permitted) as long as no personal messages are to the recruits” No direct messages were on the ribbon boards… only Blue “UK” from what i have heard… Compliance “chose” to make a statement out of this because they were after the whole staff last year… Looking for fault… Other schools use ribbon boards as well so why can’t UK? They have no answer…If the Hotel were across the street it would have been legal? This is the University Inn… on campus at UK.. They chose to make a deal out of this for the same reason… Looking for fault in the previous staff… very petty they are. By the way, David left for a very good job.. He was smart getting out when opportunity presented itself.. Good for him and thanks for your efforts David!
