UK Football Blue/White Game Recap

Kentucky (White) beat the Wildcats (Blue) 35-28. It was a brutal beginning to the game, but the kids got themselves under control and put on a decent showing. Here are some notes from the game:

-Quarterback Maxwell Smith looks a lot more confident and comfortable in offensive coordinator Randy Sanders’ offense. Besides a couple of forced throws that turned into interceptions, he knew where his receivers were going to be and how they would get in and out of their breaks. If I had to say there was a silver lining in a lot of bad football I saw today, it would be Smith and his prospects for the future.

-LaRod King didn’t play in today’s game, but he should only help a vastly improved wide receiver corps. DeMarco Robinson and Darryl Collins are proving to be valuable options on the outside for Smith. There was a lack of communication at the beginning of the game but that soon turned into a lot of production from both players.

-The linebacker corps will not be as good as next year, and how could it with the losses of Danny Trevathan, Winston Guy Jr., and Ridge Wilson. But these new kids are real. Specifically, Avery Williamson and Bud Dupree. They will carry the torch for the future and will do a very good job at it. Williamson is the hard-hitter and Bud Dupree is the athletic freak coming off of the edge of the defense. This has the potential to be an outstanding tandem.

-Punting looks like it will be one of the Achilles heels for the team next year. At the beginning of the game Coach Phillips had both punters punt from each side of the field, and I didn’t see one go over thirty yards. Seriously. There was not one punt during the game, both offenses were just going for it on fourth down. This is something to keep a close eye on going into next year.

-Even though there wasn’t any punt or kickoffs in today’s game, Joker seems like he has DeMarco Robinson firmly cemented in the kickoff and punt return role. Darryl Collins will probably help out, but Robinson looks like the man. Last year it was Winston Guy Jr. and Mychal Bailey, both had no business being back there.

-The offensive line looks a like it will struggle in SEC play because of its youth. They do a decent job in pass protection, but the run blocking was nothing less than atrocious. Smith will probably throw the ball A LOT this season.

The tight end position will be a lot more involved in this upcoming season. And that could just be because of an overall increased passing attack by the Cats. Tyler Robinson, Anthony Kendrick, and Ronnie Shields all had a lot of involvement in the offense today. That’ll help Smith in his sophomore season. Security blankets, of sorts.

-The defensive line also looks like it will be better this year, one year older in Rick Minter’s scheme. Mister Cobble and Donte Rumph could both be forces this year if they can stay healthy. Taylor Wyndham has gained some weight and will be a little more equipped to play the five-technique position in the scheme. When Collins Ukwu gets back from injury they will have more depth and more playmakers.

….I’ll be back later with some post-game video and more recap from the game.

On, On, U of K.

Sorry guys, but par for UK this season will be 3 wins — and that’s counting games against Kent St., Western Kentucky, and Samford, which are all teams that will be up for a possible upset.

It’s true. UK should be the underdog in every SEC game. Say goodbye, Joker.

Finally the Joker era will come to an end… The first season when Joker couldn’t get his team prepared to play and then got beat down by a team without a HC in the bowl game I knew we were doom. Hopefully UK will open the wallet up and get a worth coach who can recruit.

That’s right, this team will not win one SEC game. I hope they do a lot better than that, but you can just see it. I mean seriously. These drops from the receivers has just gotten beyond ridiculous. What the hell is going on there? Also, we lose our best two players in Winston Guy and Danny Trevathan. Our defense will struggle mightily — at least early on. If you watched last year, very rarely was anybody else close to the play. Trevathan and Guy were always there at the tackle. In addition to the defense that will be lacking, the team is depending on a quarterback who was never meant for anything other than backup duty. The list goes on and on and on………..

Are we ever going to get it right for the long term in football? Mediocracy, when we are not less than mediocre, can not be accepted. I am selfish, I want to be a powerhouse in all sports.

Jokers a Kentucky boy and has given a lot to the program. I would love to see him pull a Brooks and turn the thing around. But it isn’t going to happen the program has been going the wrong way and getting worse.Think he started off wrong naming Newton the starter and not at least giving Moss a shot at beating him out.Wonder what everyone would had said if Joker would have started the white kid and not have given the black kid a chance to compete for the job! Hope I’m wrong though.

I think Joker deserves this year to prove his self.I don’t think we will be any good, but we needed to at last give him time.3 years is plenty to show some direction.2 years wouldn’t have been fair.I hated to see our chance at Mike Leach pass though.

Hey, they play the game during THUNDER!?! WHo’s the genuis who came up with that idea?! No way we can compete with that, and then add miserable weather?! C’mon! I’da been there if not for the weather. Things don’t look good, but that’s what everyone thought about the baseball team this year, didn’t they?! Hows that one goin?! This team, as far as i can see it, can go either way. we could lose heart and win 2 or 3. Or they could find their heart, and win 7 or 8. They’re thin, but the talent is better now then ever. If we get some boys with MKGs motor? We might be surprised. I’m crossing my fingers. If a few of these freshmen can beat the odds, we got a chance. Go Cats.

That’s the point in football most of the freshman redshirt and don’t see the field untill their second or third year. The real talented freshman may see a little time.Thats why football is a true program unlike basketball were one player can change things. Our program is going the wrong way.If it goes two far it will take along time to fix no matter who the next coach is.

  38. Why so serious?
    11:05 pm April 21, 2012 Permalink

    35. Even if we have ‘boys with MKGs motor’ we don’t have a coach like Cal. We have Joker and his aweful playcalling!

We don’t need another coach. Joker Phillips is a great coach. We need new facillities. Brooks even said that if we want to get serious about Football we have to have real up grades! IF we get another coach one of two things will happen:

    1. He will recruit okay talent and get us to enough bowl games (no bcs) to keep us happy for 6 years, then we will cry for a new coach.
    2. He will recruit sub par athletes b/c no one wants to play in our old facillities and we will be crying for a new coach in two years.

CONCLUSION: Old facilities equals at best AVERAGE talent. THis is just a game Barnhart plays with football fans. We will not get great teams until we put enough pressure on Barnhart to upgrade what we have and also build some new facilities.

40, It’s not facilities, it’s leadership. Football is not a priority at UK period. Regardless of the coach, without the total commitment of the University SEC football is beyond UK. They want you to be happy with beating the cupcakes, Louisville, take advantage of 2 or 3 situations in the conference schedule, get to a mean nothing bowl and rejoice. Football is a revenue check that foots the bills of the athletic programs. You should know this by now, look at UK’s history. You can’t be this bad for this long without putting some effort into it. Joker is a tool for UK, he knows the score. A coach with serious ambition laughs at UK and their over marketed football team.
Barnhart is a tool, he knows the score better than anyone. You think he is suddenly going to right the program, he’s been here ten years. Look at where we are, the emphasis is not football, the UK brand is anything but football. Get Real.

In order for post 44 to be even close, the SEC would have to be historically down. I would LOVE to see UK win that many SEC games, but there is no way it will happen this year. I hope I’m wrong, but no way will that happen in this league, this year.
