UK Fans Want Afternoon Afternoon Notes

bobby-knight-kentucky-fan

As time becomes our friend and our emotions start to simmer down a bit after last night’s loss, hopefully we can find a little enjoyment from what might be my favorite Fan of the Day photo of all-time.  A UK fan, Bobby Knight, a random guy and three very different expressions displaying varying levels of amusement.

A few notes…

– Right off the bat, let’s get this out of the way.  All rumors regarding Doron Lamb are false.  There’s apparently some email circulating or message board posts stating that the freshman guard withdrew from school and quit the team last night.  There was even rumors of a fight in the locker room.  Not surprisngly, there’s not an ounce of truth to any of it.  Losing sucks.  Losing a lot sucks more.  Creating these types of embarrassing rumors makes the losing unbearable.

 – While last night brought a lot of bad news for Kentucky, it did precisely the opposite for a prominent former Cat.  If John Pelphrey turns the program around at Arkansas and makes them a national contender as some believe he can, last night will be cited as the start of that turnaround for the Hogs.  Pelphrey essentially saved his job last night, meaning he will not only get to continue his quest for resurgence, but he’ll also be able to work with a very good recruiting class next year that features five-star point guard B.J. Young.  The future has looked promising for the fourth-year coach.  There was just uncertainty as to whether or not he’d be around as a part of it.  Last night seems to have done the trick.

 – I’ve long been a part of the group that doesn’t believe freshmen get tired due to what is essentially a year-round high school season, but this team has made me do a 180.  Kentucky looks gassed.  It’s evident in their jump shots, which have become essentially their live-or-die offensive philosophy this season, and it’s apparent in their defense.  On The Leach Report this morning, Mike Pratt agreed and said that this looks like a tired team.  Playing four games in four days at the SEC Tournament is not going to help that.  But as we’re all starting to come to grips with right now, this team is not going to change.  They have to play through it.

 – Another little note that borders on a rant:  Several people have said that Josh Harrellson was not open at the time DeAndre Liggins inbounded the ball, making all of the postgame groaning about him being missed meaningless.  This is true, somewhat.  Harrellson wasn’t open when Liggins threw the ball.  He was open about a quarter of a second afterward.  If DeAndre hadn’t have forced it to Knight, the Cats would have gotten an easy look.  He slipped the screen beautifully.  Liggins just didn’t look for him.

 – Not to add injury to insult, but news broke today that Louisville football assistant Clint Hurtt would not leave for Auburn after interviewing with the national champions this week.  If there’s a reason to fear a massive resurgence of the program, it’s Hurtt, who serves as recruiting coordinator and holds the deep ties to South Florida that have helped the Cards pull guys out of the state.

If you missed the Kentucky Sports Radio show this morning, you missed a lot of talk about last night’s game.  Matt and Zach broke it down so well, you would have thought they were being guarded by Doron Lamb.  Check out the podcast below.

    2:09 pm February 24, 2011 Permalink

Well Beisner, I heard from someone that works for TCP that said that the rumors of Lamb are true. I’m not saying he is right, but I just wonder who really started this rumor and if they helped contribute to it. He is claiming he talked directly to a couple of UK players who said there was a fight after the game last night.

It’ll be alright. Season was already a let down. Lots of losses that shouldn’t have happened. No Enes Kanter.
Really, I think THE HIGH POINT of the whole season was beating the Tards on their home court, forever changing its ridiculous name to “The Litter Box.”

Funny, Matt Jones seems to have been the one to start the speculation when he did his usual “I’ve got a story but I’m only going to tell you I’ve got a story and not really tell you the story” crap on the radio this morning. He said, “I’m not happy about what I heard went down after the game,” and he was the first I heard mention anything of the sort. From that point forward, speculation was rampant.

The rumors about Lamb are from Louisville fans. They come in here and pose as KY fans hoping the players will read the posts and get them mad at the fans. Its a sabotage!

last night sucked and losing sucks but whatever. Anything can happen once you get to the tournament anyway.

And I really hope all this Lamb stuff is made up, and I hope whoever made it up gets called out.

By the way, BTI is worse than 95% of the trolls that come out from under the bridge after a loss. I’ve never met anyone with a more pessimistic view of a team that they are a “fan” of than him. He really is the Jerry Tipton of KSR.

GO CATS. Lamb will have a big game Friday against Florida, book it.

If we are tired, Skip the SEC Tourney and take a forfeit. Give the team a week off and get ready for the NCAA Tourney. I can’t possibly hurt us any more than we have hurt ourselves.

Does anyone know the penality we would have to pay for a move like this?

The only thing that makes these losses more bearable is the fact that the media is berating Bruce Pearl. Apparently he’s accused of making illegal contact with an Oak Hill recruit FOUR DAYS after his crocodile tears apology. Bruce is an arrogant scumbag that needs to be fired along with the Tennessee AD. Sorry MaconVolFan, but I would think you would want more ethical people running the athletics program at your school. If Bruce Pearl keeps his job after all of this then it will be a miracle. People complain about Calipari being corrupt and doing all of these horrible things; yet he has never even been accused of half the things ol’ Brucie has supposedly done.

Love the site and the show, but when Matt says stuff at 10.15 AM like “I’m not happy about what I heard went down after the game” and then doesn’t explain that statement, of course rumors are going to spring up. Pulling something like that, specifically after a loss, will certainly create rumors every time. He has to know that he is now in the position that saying things like that will create issues.

Guys and Gals…This coach and coaching staff might be good recruiters but they are flunking in the classroom. Nobody is getting better or being coached up and the bench is worse than any of us would have ever expected. Lamb and Jones are being big time “under achievers” for last few games. It would appear that they are more interested in getting to the next level than putting it all on the floor for their teammates and the university. If Cal is going to continue with the “one and doners” has has got to start recruiting “heart” and “defense” and look beyond just the offensive skills. There is no way we will stand a chance in Knoxville and will probably see our home court record go down in flames next 2 games. You can’t tell me that there are no chemistry issues with this team. It is no wonder though with the public berating that Cal dishes out on weekly basis. He needs to take a longer look in the mirror because this team is not drinking his kool aid.

Although photos show that Josh was somewhat open on the final play, do we really have reason to believe that were was time enough left of the 1.8 seconds for Brandon to get it to him and for Josh to shoot a short jumper or a layup? I’m certainly not as certain there was as a lot of critics seem to think. I believe that in that split second, Brandon thought his chances were better.

The killer play was the turn over in the closing seconds of regulation. If we had held on the the ball, it is much more likely that overtime would not have been necessary, making the final shot argument moot.

#48 – It’s not about Knight passing to Jorts, it’s about Liggins looking for Jorts to be open. Which he was a fraction of a second after the pass to Knight. Liggins didn’t let the play fully develop. We might be a passionate fan base but we might have the lowest IQ too.

“Kentucky looks gassed.” Really? 17, 18, 19….year old players don’t get tired. Period. How is it than someone can be considered a sports expert and make a comment about a team being tired or another team wearing a team down? Sorry. It doesn’t happen to these players at these ages. They’ve played at high levels all of their lives if they play in college so that means weekend long tournaments, endless games on playgrounds, etc. Thanks, though.

Ok…Last night I am flipping radio channels and momentarily listened to the UK pre-game call in show on WHAS. Some UK goofball (I know, redundant) calls in wanted to know if Kanter would be recognized on Senior Day! More incredibly, the call in show hosts agreed that Kanter SHOULD be recognized, but added that they were sure he would not be. REALLY??? Ok – lets clear up a few things. Kanter: (1) has never wore a UK uniform; (2) has never even been on the UK roster; and (3) is not a senior. How dumb are you people, anyway?

Almost a full season of college ball, other teams having more depth and fresh bodies to run at us, guys averaging 35 minutes a game duh. I would say they’re a little worn down and I did stay at a holiday inn express last night.
