UK Fans of the Night Want a Kentucky Sportsman of the Year Ballot

40500_681972420024_38306971_37916108_4580991_n

Thanks to our friend Mark Story at the Herald Leader, I was asked to vote for the first time on the Kentucky Sportsman of the Year ballot. The goal is to pick the individuals who have had the greatest impact on the Kentucky sports scene over course of 2011 and the criteria is somewhat up to the voter. I actually spent a great deal of time looking at all the candidates, weighing their relative merits and then sending in my Top Ten. After much thought, I went with this order:

1. John Calipari
2. Kenneth Faried
3. Charlie Strong
4. Josh Harrellson
5. Shelvin Mack
6. Danny Trevathan
7. Brandon Knight
8. Kelly Wells
9. Matt Roark
10. Victoria Dunlap

I could attempt to go through each of my selections, but in general my thoughts were simple. No figure has a greater impact on college sports than John Calipari, so he goes in the top slot. Kenneth Faried not only buoyed the Morehead State team to a national attention-grabbing upset, but knocked out another state school in the process. Charlie Strong has revived Louisville’s football program and is recruiting at a much higher level. Jorts became a national phenomenon and one of the most unlikely NBA players in history. Shelvin Mack is from Lexington and took a mid-major to back to back title games. Danny Trevathan is one of the most underrated UK football players ever and kept the season from completely coming undone. Brandon Knight led a team to a Final Four and hit two shots we will remember forever along the way. Kelly Wells led small Pikeville College/University to a national championship and showcased Eastern Kentucky pride along the way. Matt Roark ended the streak in a most improbable way. And Victoria Dunlap left UK as one of the best women’s players in the history of the school.

That is my list…Scotty Davenport, Patrick Towles and Preston Knowles just missed the cut. I appreciate getting asked to be involved and look forward to doing it again in the future.

Good to at least hear you mention Scotty’s name. What he’s done with that program is just incredible, and I’m surprised some D-1 school has yet to sweep him up.

I know this is is late, but I wanted to comment on Matt’s claim that Ashley Judd is a controversial Cat fan. I am in agreement with few of Ashley’s political views and even less of Matt’s, but I respect Ashley for her constancy and passion. She has her causes and works hard at them. The
people(left/right/center) that do not believe she is absolutely great for UK are the same ones that insisted we hire Pelphey or Ford over Cal because they “understood”.
I forgive her for the UNC gaff because I know she wont’ have that option in 2012.

Davenport is a Louisville guy to the heart. Don’t think he would leave for a random D-I job but if a place like WKU comes calling it might draw him away, but not East West South Carolina Upstate School of Science and Technology State. He does deserve to be on that list probably ahead of Roark, Dunlap, Wells, and IMO Knight and Harrellson.

where’s Willie Taggart from WKU? He inherited a winless team 2 years ago and led them to a 7-5 season this year, including winning 7 of their last 8.

Cal should not have been in the top 5. Just being calipari does not rank in the top of the sportsmen of the year category. Scotty D should have been #1. He won a national title and may win it again this year.

So, Strong goes 7-6 in football and it is considered great? How many of those 7 wins did the other team give them the game on stupid mistakes? The bar must be very low for UL football.

Please, Matt Roark shouldn’t even be on the list at all. It’s sportsman of the year award, not the most surprising one game performance of the year award. Roark dropped like a hundred passes and then ran the option against Tennessee. Our defense was the real hero of that game anyway. Not saying he didn’t play with a lot of heart and really surprise everyone but Sportsman of the Year? no way.
