UK Fans of the Morning Want SEC Teleconference Notes

KSR2

Cal’s been a busy bee this morning, appearing on The Dan Patrick Show and the SEC Coaches’ Teleconference to talk about the Cats. The highlights:

— Cal started off by praising the other coaches in the league for their coaching jobs this season, Mark Fox, Johnny Jones, Cuonzo Martin and Kevin Stallings in particular. Echoing his comments from after the Georgia loss, Cal took the blame for his team’s struggles this season: “If one guy’s one a crap job with his team, it’s me.”

— Despite the fact that this team still has some work to do to get into the NCAA Tournament, Cal reiterated his dislike for postseason conference tournaments: “I wish none of us played in the (SEC) tournament. Let’s go on to the next tournament.” Cal’s main gripe? Potentially playing three games in three days. He did concede that the tournament does have importance for seeding and his team’s possible NCAA bid. To cover his bases, he also tweeted that he understands the importance the tournament has to the BBN, so refrain from sending him an angry tweet about how much you’re paying for your hotel room.

— About the tournament. Cal said it will be “crazy” and that Kentucky’s quarterfinal matchup will be a challenge regardless of who they face: “We had two games that could have gone either way with Vanderbilt, and Arkansas smashed us.” Cal said that he would normally give his team the day off today, but since they’ve struggled so much with inconsistency, he’s going to run them “really hard.” Over the next few days, Cal is going to stress consistency with the group, who he said “laid two eggs” after beating Missouri.

— Cal was asked yet again why he decided to play Willie Cauley-Stein with four fouls. “How about I wanted to win the game. I was more afraid about losing the game.” Cal praised Willie’s improvement, which he said is a result of growing confidence :”I can see him have a 25(point)-15(rebound)-7 block night. His feet and hands so good. It’s just he gets tired out there”

— Despite all their adversity, Cal said that he’s still proud of what this team has accomplished. All in all, “we’re still fighting that’s what tournament time is about.”

— One miscellaneous note: for some reason, all of the reporters on the teleconference seemed to think that Vanderbilt would be the one that would benefit most from a “home-town advantage.” Leave it to Frank Martin to be blunt. When asked what he thought about Vandy’s “edge,” Martin showed that he’s learned some things in his first year in the league: “You can put Kentucky to play overseas and they’ll probably outdraw whoever they play against.” Duh.

Well it’s good to see that Cal is agreeing with my two-month old assessment. However taking on blame is only as good as taking on the consequences. So, Cal, now what? Are you going to change your one & done strategy? Are you going to give your pay back? Are you going to resign?

    3. Just quit. Do us all a favor and stop posting here. You’re the kind of poster who ends up making the rest of BBN look bad because other sites/media personalities don’t realize you’re a troll.

Vanderbilt’s fan base sucks. They literally only show up for on campus games, if that. Tennessee, on the other hand, will have an OK following since they aren’t on UK’s side of the bracket (means cheap tix) and a much, much larger fan base in Nashville + fans relatively close by who actually travel to support their team. Other than that, it will be all cats fans.

Last three years at the SEC tourney, you see UK fans EVERYWHERE, some UT fans, and then a Florida or Arkansas fan here or there. Don’t really see anyone else. And Vandy fans suck.

#3 yes, quite the brilliant suggestion for Cal to change his strategy after going to Elite 8, Final Four, and a National Championship. You could at least come up with a realistic sarcastic remark if you are going to pose as a UK fan.

I’m not the expert most of you are, although I did grow up listening to Cawood on the radio, but I would think Coach Cal would want to play the SEC tourney this year to give our guys more time to gel and mature. Before NCAA time, I mean.

Who gets SEC coach of the year? Donovan’s probably the favorite, but he shouldn’t be for the exact same reason Cal’s been snubbed at times – returning experience/superior talent. Cal deserves it for the fact he returned no starters, was without Willie for a time, lost Nerlens, and still finished 2nd.

Also, he’s had a tough year, and I know he’ll say some stuff that’ll rub us wrong from time to time, but Martin is a fun dude to have in the conference. Never afraid to just blurt out what he thinks or admit UK fans dominate, etc. Pearl was like that a lot.

    17) He probably just wants to go ahead and get them to the NCAA tourney, carry the momentum of the Florida win (and avoid losing a game in the SEC Tourney, either killing our resume or our momentum), and avoid any injuries before the big tourney. He’s already lost his star player in a game, and now he has to potentially play 3 games 3 days in a row without a very deep bench.

Next year, he’ll probably laugh his way to the SEC tourney, able to possibly sub 5 for 5 and still have the best 5 on the floor. If we get Randle and Wiggins, we very well may have a 2013/14 lottery pick coming off the bench in Young or Aaron Harrison, whichever doesn’t win the starter role. Plus if Nerlens returns somehow, either he or Johnson/Lee would be on the bench.

    Han,

I would go with 1. Andy Kennedy 2. Cal 3. Donovan
