UK Fans of the Morning Want Joker-Matt Jones interview

You heard us talk about the back and forth on Friday between Matt and Joker Phillips that led Joker to get on Matt for not being positive enough about UK football. If you missed it on the radio or you don’t hear the podcasts (for shame), here is the interview on its own via a Youtube video. Definitely worth your time:

I’m a HUGE football supporter, but we’ll see how positive ole Joker is come mid-October. I’d love to eat a giant plate of crow on this one, but Lord I feel bad about this year…

I’m positive about UK football. I’m positively sure that Joker is over matched as a head coach. If things hold true he will beat Florida and then loss every other SEC game.

Nothing’s changed. Same BS from Joker. Matt did not asked the tough question he promised for two weeks promoting the interview on his call-in show. For some reason we are supposed to accept 5 or 6 wins against mid level competion and be silly happy when we upset or play a top-notch opponent close. Who are we to expect to contend for the SEC title?

Good interview, really liked seeing that open discussion atmosphere. This is the first year that I have not been excited about UK football in a long time, but this discussion makes me at least have some hope for a better year. Thanks for sharing the interview.

Joker comes off badly in this interview…all he could come up with is that the fans and Matt Jones need to believe….I am sorry but Matt Jones lack of faith wasn’t what plagued the team last year. I hope I’m wrong but I am afraid we will be lucky to win 3 maybe 4 games this season…maybe one day UK will take football seriously.

How bout we let the season play out a little before taking shots. Joker deserves a chance to get us going in the right direction. I thought he did great in this interview. I’m fired up about the season.

The most important thing Joker said in this interview is we have to build consistency!! We are finally getting better recruits. We didn’t recruit well Brooks last two years. We now have good recruiting assistant coaches. Saban was 6-5 and 6-6 in his 1st two seasons at MSU in a week Big10 and Frank Beamer was 2-9 and 3-8 in his 1st two seasons aat V-Tech. Under these expectations they would be in hot water. I also like the point made about us being competitive in every game Hikers 1sr year and folks still complained!! As a long suffering UK football fan I never thought I would see the day when SOME fans would turn their backs on the program when they need you the most. Negativity from the fans can hurt the life line of the program which is recruiting!!! Go Cats beat UofL!!!

Joker hasn’t given the fans a reason to believe. The past two years have been terrible and feels like the old days of being the typical SEC doormat and worrying whether or not we can even beat UL. We’ll be lucky to win 4 or 5 games this year and that’s unacceptable even for UK football. There’s no reason why UK can’t be a consistent bowl team and win 7 games or more. It’s tiring hearing that it’s the fans’ fault. That we don’t believe or support the team. That crap has been spewed by coaches and the administration for decades. The fans are hungry for a winner but the administration keeps talking down to the fans and hiring terrible coaches. Add another million or million and a half to the head coaching salary and get a real coach. One that can actually recruit talent instead of pinning all our hopes on that diamond in the rough to turn into a player 3 or 4 years from now. We haven’t had a decent QB in years or a WR that can catch the ball since Cobb. Things are just getting worse and if at the end of the season when we’ve only won 4 games and Joker isn’t fired then UK football will officially be dead. UK will be lucky to have a 1000 fans in the stands next year.

#9. You people are like Obama still blaming Bush and not taking responsibility for the mess he’s made in his own term. If recruiting was bad the last two years of the Brooks era then Joker is partly responsible for that. He’s been on staff for years. He was made HCIW so there wouldn’t be any “consistency” issues. This idea that it was ok for him to have two losing seasons in a row makes no sense. You don’t give someone time when they already have consistency and then break that consistency by having two straight losing seasons. He was a mediocre OC and he’s an even worse head coach. When are you people going to wake up??

#10 We haven’t had a decent QB in years? Hartline was 2nd in passing yards and efficientcy in the SEC Jokers 1st season. Cobb has only been gone one season and you forget about Chris Mathews who lead the SEC in touchdown receptions Jokers 1st season!! Last year was a disappointment no doubt we lost Hartline Cobb Locke and Mathews it shouldn’t have come as a surprise that we struggled offensively especially after Collins and Clemons went down as well as several linemen. We are a lot closer to being good than people think.

Joker is a hard guy to like. I have always liked having him in the program and thought that he was a players coach and he would get the recruits and put his stamp on the program. He is a Wildcat and I wish him and the Cats the best this season, but the play last year was pitiful. I mean absolutly horrible. Thinking back to that WKU game and even the UL game. Just no execution on offense. Again, I hope he turns it around but the only thing that is going to make people feel positive or to “beleive” is to win ball games and not get blown out by 50points. If you can’t even put up a fight then get out and let somebody else try. If we are getting beat by 30points we need a new coach. Papa Brooks got us competing on a high level, we were building momentum and it all came to a screeching halt in Joker’s first year. Cobb just made it tolerable.

Joker showed great confidence in the Negative approach exhibited by the moderator.Joker’s patience, and respectfulness were very evident,in his approach.

Kentucky Sports Radio is the leader in Negativity versus the UK Football program.I take the “attitude” personally.Part of me is on that field. The comments written by your audience are rude and “sickening”,and remind me of an average age level of 12yrs old.

I am proud of all of my old team-mates,and I am thankful that I chose Kentucky. We did not have the Internet in the days that we played. There are plenty of cliches that depict FOOTBALL.”Leave it all on the field”.Games are not played on the Internet!!!

I suppose that adopting a POSITIVE approach by your supporters would be a Negative for your audience, mostly for those who have never “worn a supporter”!!!

Why do Kentucky fans wear their UK shirts EVERYWHERE? At the bar, in the club, to work, mowing the lawn, at the beach…. what is up with that? The dude from Kentucky on Big Brother literally never takes off his UK Football shirt.

. Off the subject a bit. Matt asks WHY do sponsors Not give to UK football? UK football has a 152 million USD net worth. How does a 152 million dollar corporation find it’s President/CEO? How does a 152 million dollar corporation LOOK for a ‘President’ or CEO???? Exactly. How did the UK football ‘President’ get hired? Mitch essentially put a branch manager into the CEO’s chair. His opening week the coach admitted watching cfb games to ‘see what the other coaches do!!??? O M G! When UK commits to a REAL proven winner then attendance, wins and donations will follow. What donor would want to throw their money to an organization being run by a branch manager with a pay scale about 1000% beyond his abilities? Think about it. .

I think yes, if we do have the oregon uniforms and make that exciting to wear different Uniforms each game that it would bring a little excitement. The university can afford 60 new uniforms a game and they would sale a lot of shirts and hats to fans to go along with it. No matter if you watch Oregon play on Saturday you’re always curious what Uni’s they Wore. So why not. Talk about this More and get Barnhart involved and see what happens. Great idea.

I think a big part of the problem is that when Joker took over in 2010, he had a team full of talented and experienced players (Cobb Locke and Hartline etc) and they were a disappointment…it isn’t like he was a coach that was NEW to the program. He had coached there for years and was the “coach in waiting” so I don’t understand why he needs “time to get things going”. If you have a team with Cobb, Locke and Hartline and fail to meet expectations, then tell me this..When will he ever get the job done? I don’t think his style will ever work in the SEC. You can not take 2 or 3 star players and play the same style as the teams with 5 star players and expect to win. You have to do something different…like the triple option or spread offense. At this point, what do we have to lose?

Important facts speak for themselves. Joker is a young coach on his first job as a Head Coach. Most of the Coaches you are about to read about are the same as Joker. It will surprise you when you read about the other 13 Coaches in our league. When you compare them lets look at where these other schools got their coaches from. Most of the UK Fans like to blame Joker for our program. But have we really given him a fair shot? Are we being Fair? What did we expect, a coach to come in and win the SEC at UK in his first two years? It’s UK people. Not LSU, FL,ALA, OR GA. Lets get real. We are a basketball school not football. But if we give our coach a chance and allow him to have as many as 6 seasons like the rest of the winning coaches in the league, then we might become a football school after all. I leave you with this: Most programs have hired a new Coach that is young and pushed in all the chips with hopes he turns out as good as our top three coaches in the SEC. We went with a young guy with a bright future. We spend the big bucks on basketball and fall in line with the rest of the SEC schools hiring a young new Head Coach. LSU, ALA, GA basketball is awful and they dont have coaches. So dont blame the UK program for not going out and spending big bucks on a FB coach when we are doing the same thing as the rest of the SEC.

Here are the 14 Coaches and their profiles:

    14. Ole Miss- Coach Freeze. 1st season as head coach and only been a head coach 1 season at Arkansas St. who cares about Arkansas State. Joker Could Win there too.

    13. Kentucky- Coach Joker. 3rd Season never coach anywhere head coach wise before here. 11-15 reacord after just 2 seasons. Not bad

    12. Tenn- Coach Dooley. 28-34 over all total head coach record and only 11-14 as a 3rd year head coach at Tenn. Looks like Joker is Just as good. Same SEC records

    11. Florida Coach Muschamp. First season as a head coach and went 6-6 last year. There again Joker did just as good.

    10. Miss St. coach Mullen. 4th year and never coached anywhere before there as a head coach and in his 4th year he is only 20-17. Not a great record or blowing Joker out of the Water. And he is 2 years ahead of joker in how many years hes been a head coach. Had a huge Flop last year if you remember them being ranked and just fell off.

    9. Vandy- Coach Franklin. Only one year under his belt as a head coach and he went 6-6. Just the same comparison to Joker. New Coach and decent first year.

    8. Tex A&M- Coach Sumlin. First year as head coach and caoched Houston before getting hired this year and has a head Coaching record of 35-17. Good pick up for Tex A&M but this is their first year in SEC and with a new coach. Doesn’t look promising. There again, Joker could have won at Houston. And A&M was awful in thier old Conference.

    7. Missouri- Coach Pinkel. 156-90 as ahead coach but has been at his school for 12 years. 12 years I said. and is only 83-54 with Missouri from their old conference. NOT SEC! Lets see what he does in Sec. Sure if Joker was at Miss for 12 seasons in that old conf he would have 84 wins too. And they were Just “OKAY” in that old conference.

6.Auburn- Coach Chizik. This is his 4th year. So he is 2 up on Joker. He had the best playe rin the game the year he won. But back to facts. He is 34-29 lifetime as a head coach. Those are not awesome numbers. Yes he is 30-9 in SEC. But Auburn has a bit better history than we do with wins and they have a coach thats been there for 4 years. Lets compare after 4 years and see how close Joker can get. There is no way you can feel good about a coach and say he is WAAAAAY better than Joker when he is 34-29 lifetime as a head coach. Auburn took a chance like we are with Joker and look at what happen. And they have just been okay since they havent had the best QB in th game that year. Think about it. If we had CAm that year we would have been right there too. And rememeber there was something about paying him to get there but UK doesnt do that!

    5. Georgia- Coach Richt- 12 years. Tehre again a coach with 12 years under his belt is 106-37. He was given a Head coach job without exp. and now after 12 years he is on the Hot seat. They dont even want him. Joker has had 2 years. Not 12. Judge or compare after 12. If joker could get all the Georgia boys and be a coach there he would do just as good. Kentucky is a little tougher to get a kid to come to than GA. Be honest. But even this coach is not a success in their eyes today.

    4. Arkansas- Coach Petrino- Now finally a coach that can Coach and Arkansas can get some credit. Took a up and coming winner whose lifetime record is 74-26. Record at Arkansas is 33-17. But hes also been there for 6 years. He has brought his style and brand to Arkansas. So give Joker some time and maybe we could have this success. But who would have know a coach from Louisville would have been this good. You have to take chances like we have with Joker.

    3. South Carolina- Its Spurrier Folks. Need I say more. South Carolina went out and got a winner with a 195-75 record overall as a head coach. He is 55-34 at South Carolina. No joker is Not Spurrier and will never be. But Spurrier also has had 20 years as a head Coach.

    2. Alabama- Saban 54-12- Been there 6 seasons. 4 more than Joker Best Coach other than……

    1. LSU- OLE MILES been there 8 years 103-38 head Coach record with a 75-17 LSU record.

So other than the last three Coaches who will all three be in HOF. All the other teams have taken chances on young coaches with no exp before getting highered where they are. So you can be upset that UK hasn’t gone out and Bought a Saban or Miles. They are too Rare. But someone gave them a chance and 20 years later in their Careers look at where they are. Give Joker time and see what he can do after say 6 seasons. The winning Coaches in this league have had atleast 6 seasons. You can expect Joker to come in and win the SEC his first two years. Programs take time and i know that we are all upset about the past and our record, but may Just maybe Joker might turn out to be like one of these winners. Because all the other 10 Coaches are just like Joker. Coached under 6 years and basically their first Jobs as Head coaches. AND WE ARE IN THE SEC PEOPLE.

Hey #22 Petrino isn’t the coach at Arkansas. I am tired of hearing how bad other coaches are. I really don’t care. I’m just sick and tired of UK sucking and the administration doesn’t give a damn. We need to make serious changes if we ever want to compete with the better teams.
