This may very well be the biggest sports news day of the year, yet here in Kentucky, it is rather quiet. While the nation focuses on the NCAA Championship, Opening Day, Tiger at the Masters and the Donovan McNabb trade, we are left with the ramifications of the “Mark Hamilton” affair and arguments about whether Beisner hates white people (he does). So lets get some quick hitters:
— The only recruiting news of note is that Doron Lamb insists again that he will make his decision public on April 17, the same day that we are scheduled to hear from Josh Selby. One might thing that puts the two of them headed to the same school but one might be a communist. Lamb says that Bill Self has told him he will play 30 minutes a game at Kansas, while Calipari has told him no guarantees. One thing Calipari shares with old school Tubby…no playing time guarantee.
— The hot rumor of the day is that the Nets will offer Coach K between 12-15 million a year to be their coach. That is silly money, and one has to think that K wouldnt be interested. But he is old, may win title #4 and simply cant want to look at the Plumlees for another year. So maybe.
— If not K, then many think the Russian billionaire wants Calipari. The idea of Lebron, Wall and a Lopez twin would be enticing. But he has been down that path once before and hated it, so it is hard to see. Either way, expect the talk to heat up.
— Yes its Opening Day, which means I will pay attention until my Braves are out of it. I also pick two “random bad teams” to cheer for every year, to justify my MLB Extra Innings purchase. This year I am going with the Kansas City Royals in the AL (to watch Zach Greinke) and the Dodgers in the NL, to enjoy the final year of Vin Scully. Yes I know the Dodgers arent bad, but listening to Scully call a game while I drift off to sleep has become my summer tradition.
— Drew Franklin is bartending at Keeneland during the Spring meet. Adjust your schedules accordingly.
— Speaking of Keeneland, Coach Calipari is there Friday to sign Makers Mark bottles. It starts at 8 am…good luck. Friday is also the day I hope to make my one Keeneland trip of the year, but not for Makers bottles. I hope the weather is good.
— I am hearing very good things about Ryan Mossakowski from those who know a lot more about football than me. Supposedly the coaches think he is killing early Spring practice. Watch out Mike and Morgan.
— I hate Duke. So I am a Butler Bulldog for life at least for tonight. It has to be time to pull the “Its Shelvin Mack Mack Mack all dressed in Black Black Black with silver buttons buttons buttons all down his back back back” song out.
— LIVE BLOG AT 9 PM tonight for the Championship game. Me, Beisner, Drew, CM Tomlin, Gregg Doyel, Bomani, Turkey Hunter and more all will be doing our nonsense. Make sure and check it out.
