UK Fans of the Day Want Some Evening Thoughts

This has been a tremendously busy few days around UK land, so some quick thoughts are necessary:

1. UK Football: We are all depressed about UK football right now. On this we are unified. The Western Kentucky game was a complete disaster and has come close to sealing Joker Phillips’ fate. But there is still the one little matter of 9 more games yet to come for this team that we must all face. It will be interesting to see how the team responds to the loss at Florida, but it will hard to gain much knowledge as the likelihood of a blowout is strong. What is much more important is that when Kentucky comes home to South Carolina in two weeks, Spurrier doesn’t make it ugly. The old Ball Coach would like nothing more than to lay it on the Cats (although he does like Joker) and an ugly game could make the attendance for the next game down to friends and family. In a perfect world, speculation as to future coaching prospects would not be occurring. But no matter what, it is happening and will continue to happen. For me, two things are imperative…shoot for the moon and try to land in the stars and (2) dont hire Tommy Tuberville. Thank you.

2. The UK NBA Alumni Game: The Alumni Game was obviously excellent for the fans, but equally as important, may be looked back upon as a huge step in elevating the UK “family” atmosphere around the program. By centering the weekend around the Calipari Fantasy Camp and the UK Alumni Game, this past weekend became the unofficial “reunion” for the UK basketball team. The players interacted with each other from all generations and it became one of the better times the program has seen in some time. Former player after former player said to me that it was hugely important to them to reconnect with the school and that they hoped this would be an annual affair. I am not sure that the game itself will continue to happen on a yearly basis, but a fan experience or the like, to go in conjunction with the camp probably will. UK basketball creating a family that goes through generations of players is just another step in Calipari taking the program to a higher level that cannot be matched anywhere else.

3. Midnight Madness Campout: Yes, I still call it Midnight Madness, and it will be that way to me for all time. But whatever you call it, the tents are already out and people are ready for the great UK communal fan experience. Drew and I will be making our way to Campout on Thursday night (when there is also the Stone Cold Willow versus Nerlens Noel basketball game) and we look forward to seeing all the campers once again. If you get a chance, stop by even if you aren’t camping out…especially at night, it becomes a very cool scene. And if you are around, look for our folks giving out the shirts below, as KSR partners with Fan Outfitters to outfit the Campout 2012:

4. Future of NCAA Amateurism at Stake: The most important lawsuit in America regarding college athletics is still kicking in California, where Ed O Bannon sued the NCAA for using his (and other college athletes’) likeness in video games/commercials. The discovery that is coming out of the lawsuit is fascinating and if you get a chance, it is worth reading more about it in this ESPN article today. The seismic sea change in college athletics could come from this case, so it is definitely worth following intently.

5. New Podcast For You: If you haven’t yet started listening to or following my new podcast with the Walk-Ons, please do.. We are talking national college basketball as I join two Duke guys (that I promise are entertaining) to talk about whatever is going on in college basketball. This episode includes Calhoun, UNC scandal, Gillispie, Calipari Fantasy Camp and more. Make sure and check it out here.

Night post coming…for now, just be happy…JAMAAL MAGLOIRE RE-SIGNED WITH THE TORONTO RAPTORS!

Matt, when we get a new football coach, could you guys PLEASE get a writer that has at least a middle school level knowledge of football. Listening to you and reading your writers is painful for a true football person…and that probably reflects our fanbase at this basketball school…

Florida blowout doesn’t “seem” likely, yet actually on paper it is a certainty, along with history saying so. The “Ole Ball Coach” will run up the score. But maybe not because “he likes Joker?”. Absurd. Matt=Joker=Obama. Nice try. Thinly veiled. Sad post. I hope the free thinkers here didn’t buy that for a second.

#5 I know it will not happen because of the money UK would loose plus I don’t know how it would work out for season ticket holders, but I would love to see maybe a preseason game at memorial. If anyone could make it happen Cal could and probably would. Would love to see them use the final four court.

I`ve been a Wildcat fan since the 60`s. If you ever think we will compete in the SEC your only kidding yourselves. It isnt the current AD`s fault either. We have had several before him and will have several afterwards and it will continue to be the same until the Administration attitudes are changed.
Look at every football coach we have had over the years and all have had 500 or sub records. We showed, in the fifties, where we stand on sports. When Rupp was given his Cadlilac and The Bear was given a watch. When Rupp said this town isnt big enough for you and me and I`m not going anywhere.
Put 10 million into the football facilities, give football a recruiting room, an updated locker room, new practice facilities. Then gauge the recruiting.
We should have hired Howard in the 80`s but the admin was afraid of him. Afraid he would upset the basketball “people”, turn the page on football. So we didnt hire him, U of L did and look what we did for them. Turned the page.
THE ADMINSTRATION IS AFRAID OF A TOP NOTCH COACH. THEY MAY HAVE TO SPEND SOME MONEY. Pay basketball money and get a good staff. Oh , your afraid too

  26. Kneel

Hey 25, if i recall, in 2007 we beat Arkansas ranked and also the Champion LSU that year. Arkansas was the only other team to beat LSU that year. Call me crazy but I believe that would be considered “competing.”

Im not arguing 27, but I`ve watched Kentucky sports for around 45 years and the only time we have competed, we were placed on probation shortly afterwards, in football.
    Curci – probation
    Mummi – probation
Claiborne – No probation but 5-6 or 6-5 was the norm
    Curry – bad
    Joker – bad so far
Brooks – about 500 – 4 bowls but no farther

Here’s hoping this post – particularly the portion conceding a loss at Florida – makes it to UK’s locker room bulletin board. Reverse psychology or Jedi mind trick, Matt may have found the impetus our football Cats have been lacking – absolute certainty of their failure. Low expectations are one thing, but to completely piss on their prospects, we might as well lay our bodies down on the tarmac as the team plane taxis to depart.

It was Joker Phillips who finally beat Tennessee. Not Curry or Mumme or Morris or Brooks. It was Joker Phillips who beat Steve Spurrier – who is 18-0 vs. UK otherwise. And it will be Joker Phillips who will finally beat Florida. Might as well be this Saturday – no one gave him a chance to break the other 2 streaks. Matt Jones certainly didn’t.

    #32- 47 years here…good post…REALLY tired of losing…year-after-year!
1.) The Cats will not beat FL…NO reverse psych…been to the Swamp too many times and have lost every time…tired of the losses!
    2.) Joker MAY go 2-10…
3.) Barnfart should go the way of Joker…”Goodbye and Greyhound You’re Gone”…
4.) FREE Leach (not going to happen – Barnfart screwed this up also); Gruden – great, but isn’t interested; Tuberville is a loser as is Petrino…Tressel only succeeded because he was at Ohio State…hire a strong and credible coach away or great assistant (Venables/Clemson)…if Vandy can do it (w/out an Athletic Director) we should be able to pull it off.
    5.) Per Barnfart…GO RIFLE TEAM!

#24 – Thanks for unknowingly proving the point that football’s problems have always been caused by the administration’s lack of attention. It wasn’t BBN that bought Rupp a caddy and Bear a watch, it was the administration. Has the light come on for you, yet? Let’s stop offering excuses and instead get busy building a powerhouse.
