UK Fans of the Day want Harrison Twins’ Notes, Quotes, & Video

That was exhilarating. I’ve always found it odd that we place so much stake in the decisions of kids, but we are UK fans and that is exactly what we do. We obsess. That’s what makes us the most passionate fan base in all of collegiate sports. I trust in Cal and everything, don’t get me wrong. But I was legitimately nervous. Aaron and Andrew played this recruitment very close to the vest & no one knew anything. BUT NOW WE DO!  Aaron AND Andrew,  COME ON DOWN!!!

-The ESPNU show itself was an ESPNU show. It wasn’t great. They mixed in some football recruiting and commercials until finally at 5:34 EST, the twins made the announcement that they would be attending the University of Kentucky.

This makes the 3rd year (2009, 2010, 2013) since Cal has been at Kentucky that he has gotten 2 of the top 5 players in the nation. I have a feeling he is going to add years to this stat in the future and most likely add another top five guy or two in this 2013 class.

Let’s get to some quotes from the show:

Andrew Harrison

-“I might be the worst video game player in the country. Terrible at video games.”

-“Even though I’m highly rated or whatever, I still feel like I’m just as important as the last player on the bench. I try to get everyone involved.

-“The most important thing to me is winning. I know Aaron scores more points than me, but it doesn’t matter to me. I just really like to win.

-“When we went to Kentucky, it was like the week before Midnight Madness. There were tents and people were sleeping outside and camping out for Midnight Madness.”

-“Like Aaron said, the attention is fun. Being on magazines and people knowing your name that you’ve never even seen before. People wanting your autographs and little kids wanting to take their picture with you and stuff. It’s a great feeling.”

Aaron Harrison

-(On Andrew) “He’s probably the biggest, most dominant player in the country, really. He does whatever he wants on the floor.”

-“We always knew we were going to the same school.”

-(what he liked about Kentucky) “Just all the attention you get. Everyone knows who you are when you walk in the gym. It’s a great feeling.”

-(on seeing people camped out for Madness) “I was really wondering if they were okay. I didn’t understand how much people loved basketball there.”

-Paul Biancardi (of Coach Calipari fantasy camp coaching fame) took some time during the show to compare the two players to current NBA players. He compared Andrew to Chauncey Billups, Tyreke Evans, and Deron Williams. Those guys were taken 3rd, 4th, and 3rd in their respective NBA drafts. My namesake, Aaron, was compared to Ben Gordon, Joe Johnson, and Brandon Roy. They were taken 3rd, 10th, and 6th in their respective NBA drafts.

Aaron has DEEP RANGE. During the show they showed him making some in game shots from WAY outside the NBA three point line. He looked like Doron Lamb 2.0.

What stands out the most to me are the things they can do at their size. They will be a nightmare for undersized opposing guards trying to defend them, not to mention how much of a terror they will be to defend. They are long and strong. (Insert Sir Mix A Lot joke here.)

-My favorite part of the show (other than them announcing for Kentucky) was the “Fun Facts about Twins” portion of the show. I only one of these is made up.

Approximately 1 in 285 US born children are identical twins.

Twins are twice as likely to be left handed.

Identical twins typically have different fingerprints.

Identical twins have almost identical brainwave patterns.

Identical twins that are top 5 basketball recruits always go to Kentucky.

-Instead of a play by play of the announcement, what if I told you I had a video of it? Might that be something you’d be interested in? I thought so. I got y’all.

-After the announcement, they were asked to pin point the moment when they both knew that Kentucky was where they wanted to go.

Aaron- “Well, we just sat down one night and just decided that we just wanted to go somewhere where we could win as soon as we get there.”

-Aside from the winning, Andrew was asked other factors that led them to this decision.

Andrew- “I think Coach Calipari presented a challenge for us and he just told us from day one that he was going to push us everyday and that’s what we really wanted to hear. We just want to become better players.”

-How much did Calipari’s ability to develop NBA talent weigh into the decision?

Andrew-“I know his track record, of course. He has had a lot of high draft picks as point guards. I just want to get there first and I just want to become better everyday. I’m not looking to that yet. I just want to get there on campus and show them what I can do.”

-Aaron went on to thank Maryland and SMU for recruiting them, saying that he knows a scholarship is a lot of money and he was grateful that they would offer that to him.

-Andrew said on their visit to Kentucky people knew who they were as soon as they stepped off the plane. They were taking pictures and signing autographs and felt like rock stars. But that’s not why they chose Kentucky. They chose Kentucky because of the basketball.

-The host of the show, who was named Matt and whom I called “Matt in glasses”, asked who would win in one on one. Andrew said Aaron could beat him.

-Hey guys, it doesn’t matter. You’ll be playing on the same team. KENTUCKY.

Congratulations Aaron and Andrew. Welcome to the Big Blue Nation!

I am impressed with how they held themselves and how well they spoke. So many of these kids mumble and slur their words together, but not these guys. I like how they hold themselves as professionals and really look like gentlemen. UK goes after and gets the best players and some very bright young men, too. I wish the best for them, congrats guys.

  16. Which one is the one that’s a half inch taller??

    16) My future teammate Aaron Harrison is slightly taller at 6′ 5.5″ that his brother Andrew at 6′ 5″. Andrew is a bit more like a bull though, as he weighs in at 5 pounds heavier than his taller brother. Can’t wait for these dudes to throw me lobs.
