UK Fans of the Day Want and Desire Afternoon Notes

The Andrew Wiggins hoopla is done and gone and we are getting close to summer arriving. So it is time to get a few notes on the barbie:
— We will begin the 2014 class focus in earnest next week but for now lets take one more celebratory look at the 2013 class joining. We can all debate what the starting lineup will be next year and Kentucky has a lot of options. But let’s assume for argument sake that the one I think is most likely takes the floor:
PG: Andrew Harrison
SG: Aaron Harrison
SF: Alex Poythress
PF: Julius Randle
C: Willie Cauley-Stein
In this lineup, the 3/4 are basically the same position and the team is super athletic and quick. If this is the lineup, Kentucky will LIKELY START FIVE FUTURE LOTTERY PICKS. Read that sentence again. Five future lottery picks. Then on the second team:
PG: Dominique Hawkins/Jarrod Polson
SG: James Young
SF: Kyle Wiltjer
PF: Marcus Lee
C: Dakari Johnson
We will probably never see this actual lineup in practice due to its tremendous size, but for argument’s sake, THE SECOND TEAM HAS THREE FUTURE FIRST ROUND PICKS, plus Kyle Wiltjer who is likely to be drafted somewhere eventually. Your reserve team has three guys who will be first round picks, all of whom could play their way into the lottery eventually. That is insane.
So would it have been nice to get Wiggins? Undoubtedly yes. But, it doesn’t mean things aren’t great as is.
— You heard Calipari talk yesterday about how he would no longer recruit in a way to “protect” players. What does that mean? Well if you use your Calipari decoder ring, you know that it means that he won’t do what plagued his group last year when he tried to protect Alex Poythress and Archie Goodwin. Calipari believed in both guys a great deal and in recruiting, tried to make sure not to bring in players that might trump them. When Dez Wells (who went to Maryland) and Arsalan Kazemi (who went to Oregon) became possibilities, Kentucky looked at both and wanted both. But then Calipari made the decision on both, to back down on the recruitments. Part of that decision may have been the desire to not express lack of confidence in two freshman who he knew might have fragile egos at first. He now realizes that was a mistake. Both of those players would have helped UK last year in a transfer role and the one transfer UK did get, Julius Mays, often led the team at the end of the year. He kept Poythress and Goodwin from competition, something he will never do again. Competition is going to make the players go and if they don’t thrive on it, then it will be on them.
— Big thanks to the folks at K&G Tire Pros in Oldham County for hosting the show today. Huge crowd of UK fans came out and it was a great time. Here we were after the UL fan stopped staring us down. You can get the podcasts here:

— On the football side of things, Kentucky may see up to 3 commitments in the next three weeks as a lot of big targets make their decision. Darius West will be choosing on May 30th and things look good for the Cats, as the other recruits press hard for someone they really want to add to the class. Add in WR Braxton “Honeynut” Berrios (the best nickname ever by the way…this kid will be a fan favorite) and the Cats could continue to increase the class soon. The key for UK is to continue to spread momentum throughout the summer leading into a season that may be difficult. I think you will see these decisions spread out in such a way so as to make that happen and continue the upwardly mobile rise of UK football in ways that many (including me) didn’t think were possible.
Big weekend ahead as UK Softball hosts its first regional in its history. On our way out, a salute to one of the legendary drivers of NASCAR, Dick Trickle. He committed suicide at the age of 71, a legend of the old school NASCAR ways. He is famous for his name (which people said on Sportscenter after every race) and his unique personality as shown by this video below…during a race in Talladega, Trickle takes a minute to enjoy a cigarette while driving around the track. Such characters are rare indeed. RIP Dick.

Good to see what the projected line-up will be. It’s also nice to know that if AP doesn’t compete James Young is right there to take over. Young will get really good minutes regardless similar to Darius Miller since the lineup will have more flexibility. If Andrew goes out, maybe Aaron slides to the PG and Young plays the 2. When Aaron is out he can play the 2, and when AP is out he can play the 3. Will be fun.
Regarding the Mays comment, I will only disagree in the sense that when we needed his leadership in March, especially on the road fighting for a spot in the tournament, he disappeared. The numbers don’t lie. They’re actually terrible.
UK Cleavage Girl needs to be motor-boated… badly.
Which dude gets two chicks?
5,6,1,4,2,3; good work to some of these guys.
Wiltjer at SF … don’t think so
Cal’s gotta walk the tightrope of still attracting top talent, which means one-and-dones, while signing enough quality players to be able to teach and still win. This year will be his ultimate test. He has so much talent, if we hear stories about unsatisfied players, he could take a major hit after last year. If, however, they play great and are happy and everyone who wants to be drafted is, Cal will continue to dominate recruiting in a way no one can imagine.
Can’t wait to see him be able to sub 3-4 guys at a time who can still run up the score, pressing and playing hard-nosed D without having 3 guys on the floor who can’t score. Gonna be awesome, especially if the refs actually follow the emphasized rules on handchecking and charge/block.
1) Don’t forget that Cal can go really big and if Poy isn’t competing or gets in foul trouble, Cal can play 1 Harrison, 2 Harrison/Young, 3 Randle, 4 Lee/Wiltjer, 5 WCS/Johnson. Randle at the 3 would be really, really hard to guard.
Hey Matt…Isn’t Derrick Willis a part of the team…Cal said yesterday that he loved his upside…Just saying
Looks like John Hood will get ZERO playing time this year.
#6) I agree that Randle at the 3 will be used and will be effective, but the other team will still guard him with a 4. The match-up issue would be Lee/Wiltjer in your example against a typical 3 unless they sub in another big. They’d probably go zone as opposed to getting man-handled. Definitely nice to have a lot of options and depth.
I like my team
I doubt AP will start & Hawkins will never play over polson.
Have you seen the class? Ap will never be a lotto pick. Gordon, wiggins, etc. not to mention other players that came back. Young will take his place by the end of the year along with lee. Alex will be lost
Or was I the only one that watched ap play last year
I think Young pushes both Aaron Harrison and Poythress for PT.
#8 Hood will get plenty of PT when we are up by 30 on teams.
I think the point of listing the 2nd team is to just show all of the players. This isn’t the depth chart though. Wiltjer will not play the 3, and Polson/Hawkins will not be the 2nd option at point guard.
Adolf’s pic for fans of the day
And how do you know Johnson won’t pull a orton. We are currently recruiting players at his position for a reason
Scary, party of 10 or 11?
Was that picture at the remote before or after Ryan gave you Bubonic plague?

where is the podcast? Im not seeing it on iTunes yet
Bobby, in regards to your Alex Poythress comment – do you really think Alex will be the same player as last year? He’s a 4.0 student. I’d be willing to bet he learned from his passive play last year and makes a leap this year in regards to production. In other words, he will be better.
2,1,4,5,3,6
Well done fellas
Tarik black still available? Senior(grad) and will only take up one year. Could be something to look at
6,2,1,3,5,4
Kyle Wiltjer is NOT a SF and never will be
Ryan Lemond putting on some weightt!!!
Lol
Matt, for a lawyer you don’t write very well. We can debate if I’m a hater or not but let’s assume for argument sake that sentence you wrote was a garbled mess. You are the king of hindsight geniuses, you always knew it all along right after it happens. Just effin with ya a little. I do enjoy the site, just proofread
Agree with #1 regarding Mays- All he did was a continuation of what Cal tried all year long- to yell/intimidate his teammates. It was completely ineffective and on top of that he didn’t produce himself. 38 mins, 5 points (Robert Morris) isn’t necessarily “leading” the team.
Thank goodness for short guys.
What, no pictures of the angry guy in the UofL shirt?
Finally! Many of us said it four years ago; actually going back to the 96-96-98 teams: KentuckY should always and forever have the TWO best teams in the Country. One on the court and the other on the bench. And this team gets us back to that mind-set. I wish CoachCal had listened to us back then. It would have saved everyone a year of frustration but better late than never. And…we did get #8 in the process.
Imagine if you will, this upcoming season when Aaron Harrison needs to come out. And JAMES YOUNG comes in to replace him…James Young a 5-star stud in his own right. And at C, Dakari comes in for WCS!?! That’s KentuckY basketball. Randle slides to the 3 and MARCUS LEE…comes off the bench! Are you kidding me?
It’s gonna be a FUN year, folks!
If you crop out the back row of this picture you would really have a nice picture.
Unless Poythress makes a huge stride he will play behind Young and perhaps Lee. Young won’t require a heart monitor for him to understand how hard he needs to play.
3! 3! Dear God 3!
Lets be honest, next years squad lacks depth at the guard spots.
35. Amen man. 3,3,3,3,6,3,3,3,3,3
All those cute ladies around and them boys are hugging on each other.
36. not really. 3 five-star guards and a proven senior in polson, and a competitor in Hawkins. Already 3 times as good as last years backcourt.
Kind of glad Wiggins didn’t sign. Call is good but one can only blend so much talent. May have better team due to better team chemistry as Wiggins seems to want a place he can be the “main man”.
Phuokdemtiddies
35. and 37. Agree 100% you motorboatin’ SOBs! Glad to see some others got some taste on here.
