UK Fan of the Day Survived Hurricane Sandy and Wants Afternoon Notes and Podcast

As the people of the northeast try to put their lives back together and run in the NYC Marathon, we salute this Cats fan who took his UK flag out into the storm as it hit earlier this week.

—  I thought about skipping today’s afternoon notes because, according to Cal, we don’t do crap. In last night’s press conference, he asked reporters if anyone has looked at the points per lineup from the game. “Our fans have already done it,” he said. “You guys are only media. You guys don’t do crap.”

Touché, Coach. Touché.

—  Calipari also told us about one of the players joining his book club. Cal said, “He’s getting a book every two weeks that he’s got to read and tell me what’s on it because he’s messing around academically.  So I said, ‘Well, good, you’re going to learn to love reading because you are going to read.  You and I are reading the same books and we’re going to talk about what we’re reading.'”

And the haters say Calipari doesn’t care about academics. What other coach in America would sit down with one of his players and dissect a book — one the kid probably isn’t interested in — to get him to enjoy reading?  We don’t know who the player is, but I love the thought of Calipari sitting down with Archie, Nerlens, Alex or whoever, and discussing Dale Carnegie’s ideas in “Lifetime Plan for Success.”

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist makes his NBA debut tonight at 7:00 against the Indiana Pacers. It’s okay to cry.

— Anthony Davis just passed Felix Baumgartner (the guy who jumped out of space) as my favorite Red Bull athlete. Red Bull announced yesterday that Davis is joining the family. Enjoy this video of A.D. showing his new wings…

He’s living a hell of a life.

— The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife is giving away $650 in Dick’s Sporting Good gift cards in its Shoot, Throw and Go Facebook Contest. Click the banner to learn more.

— On today’s podcast, Matt and Ryan recapped Kentucky basketball’s first exhibition game of the season and talked a little football before tomorrow’s game. Have a listen…

I bet that player who is joining Cal’s “book club” is Archie; my friend has a class with him and says he hasn’t shown up in weeks.
