UK Fans of the Day Want Afternoon Notes

uk-fans-of-the-day-valentines-day

A few notes on this Monday after Arcade Fire….

 – On the SEC Coaches Teleconference today, Calipari criticized his team for their inability to close out games and said that they let six breakdowns in the final five minutes of the game ruin what he called 35 minutes of “terrific” basketball.  Cal said that his team hasn’t figured out yet that defense is as big a part of winning late as making offensive plays and that the lack of attention to defensive details and assignments are what is costing them.  He cited Florida as a team that is able to finish strong because they’re players raise their intensity.  He said his team has to figure out how to do the same.  Obviously, the next step in finding a way to close games is making the Cats choose between a Rollie Fingers mustache, a Dennis Eckersley mullet or a Brian Wilson beard.

 – Brace yourself for this.  UK is favored by twenty points over Mississippi State.  Yes, I said twenty.  Two-zero.  Wow.

 – You can assume that if he was a betting man, Calipari wouldn’t be taking the Cats.  He said on the call this morning that Mississippi State has “as good of players as anyone” in the SEC and they are going to come in with something to prove.  Given the mismatch issues they seem to present for the Cats in the area of personnel, Kentucky appears to be in a battle tomorrow.  No way this one could be a blow-out.

 – TWENTY POINTS!!!!!   TWENTY!!!!!!!!!

 – You love Randall Cobb.  Apparently, so does Todd McShay.  ESPN’s second-best set of NFL Draft hair already placed Cobb at #29 overall last week on his big board and rated him as the draft’s third-best receiver.  On this morning’s Sportscenter, McShay had him listed as the fourth-best running back prospect.  I’m still cautious about whether this was a typo that made it’s way onto television, but McShay and Kiper review running backs tomorrow and Cobb could be in the discussion.  Which would seem a little surprising.

 – Speaking of surprising, TWENTY POINTS!!!!!!  TWENTY POINTS!!!!!

– One last note on the contest for The V Foundation.  The link will remain at the top left of the site and we’ll be able to update periodically with who is winning.  Thank you to all of you who have or will donate.  We’ve all been lucky beyond our wildest dreams so far and we’re excited about being involved in some stuff coming up that allows us to give back a littlel.

If you missed the Kentucky Sports Radio show today, you really dropped the ball.  The guys talked UK and Vandy, DeMarcus Cousins, Skyline Chili and the Grammy’s with Tomlin.  It was a week’s worth of fun jammed into 120 minutes.  Re-live it below.

The Tubby Smith Effect – Recruiting Damage Analysis at UK over 10 years:

    Todd Tackett
    J. P. Blevins
    Cory Sears
    Adam Chiles
    Rashaad Carruth
    Nate Knight
    Saul Smith
    Bernard Cote
    Brandon Stockton
    Preston LeMaster
    Josh Carrier
    Antwain Barbour
    Matt Heissenbuttel
    Shagari Alleyne
    Lukasz Obrzut
    Sheray Thomas
    Adam Williams
    Jared Carter
    Rekalin Sims
    Bobby Perry
    Dwight Perry
    Mark Coury
    Michael Porter
    Morakinyo Williams
    Mark Krebs
    Matt Scherbenske
    Kerry Benson

Do you realize of what’s listed that’s an average of 2.7 duds per year over Tubby’s 10 year season (27/10)?

If you think about an average recruiting class for a 13 scholarship NCAA division 1 team, (and we’ll yank the walk-ons for this comparison – I think I got them all), but 13 spots turning over every 4 years equals 3.25 players per year needed. Since the list above is roughly 24 scholarship players equaling 2.4 players per year selected (24/10), that leaves 0.85 players left per year of available room to land the guaranteed big star that pans out.

Stretch that number out over 4 years, if that 0.85 of a recruit of worth actually stayed 4 years (which less than half did) you would have 3.4 players worth putting in the rotation available to put on the floor any given year. Remember, this number is overinflated because not all the calibur recruits stayed all 4 years (yet to be very kind I’ll use this assumption).

So in essence, during Tubby’s years we lacked 1.6 players per game worth putting on the court at any given time (considering the other 3.4 players played 40 minutes each, another stretch of the data in kind). When Kentucky hit the court we could beat unranked teams because they lacked a complete roster as well. Yet when Kentucky played a ranked team near the end of the season, after all the chaff was separated from the wheat, we weren’t playing 5 vs 5.

Why did Tubby only make 1 Final Four in 8 Years? He’d get beat when all he had to offer was 3.4 players vs 5 against end of season proven teams. When did he make the Final Four? When he still had at least 5 (I count 7 – see below) NCAA Division 1 calibur players leftover from Pitino’s recruiting classes.

The 1997-98 Class: (quality court worthy players – numbered)

    Jeff Sheppard (1)
    Nazr Mohammed (2)
    Scott Padgett (3)
    Wayne Turner (4)
    Heshimu Evans (5)
    Jamaal Magloire (6)
    Michael Bradley (7)
Allen Edwards (potential sub for limited minutes)
Cameron Mills (potential sub for limited offensive minutes)
    Saul Smith
Myron Anthony (potential sub for limited minutes)
    Ryan Hogan
Steve Masiello (Director of Ticket Operations)

Hence, another bit of revealing evidence behind the statement, “he couldn’t produce with his own players.”

    13. Totally wrong. That’s exactly what Vegas does. The line may move down a bit if the early money goes on MSU, but 50/50 split of the money is ideal and the desired result of Vegas. As for the line, MSU sucks and it’s at Rupp…of course it’s close to 20. Could care less what their team looks like on paper. On the court they look like garbage.

#21 – RidgeRunner – Anti-Tubby or Quality Assessment based on something other than simply opinion?

This analysis couldn’t be done when he was still coaching here, and since he’s having trouble in Minnesota that highlights a pattern in this regard, it makes since to run the numbers. I do bleed blue, some years more than others.

I love Tubby. As long as he’s not coaching my team. 🙂

regardless of how many useless tubby put on the floor, we have to worry about now and not look in the past. Tubby’s gone, Billys gone, whats the point in beating that dead horse? Everyone knows tubby slacked off in recruiting, Billy would recruit 8th graders and players no one heard about.

We need to do something about our refuse to lose attitude and it has to come from everyone on the team. Last year JW, EB and DC wanted it so bad, they took UK to a 35-3 record with questionable outside shooting but they had the will to win attitude. This team is still finding that.

If this were a road game, the spread would have us losing by 2… And be right. Good team at home, Sun Belt team on the road. Not sure how we are still a ranked team to be honest…

#23 – Andy – So we can look at the past regarding Kentucky basketball when we talk about the 7 Banners, but nothing else?

I’m glad you make the rules.

I don’t know about you, but when other state newspaper writers stereotype the citizens of Kentucky (as Minnesota’s Star Tribune writer Jim Souhan did back in 2008, and then again yesterday in what was made to appear to be an apology yet included another underhanded insult) I felt it was necessary to respond not in attack, but in fact.
