UK Fans of the Day Want Afternoon Notes

A couple of notes on a Monday where the news is coming at a frenzied pace…

 – For the second consecutive week, the Cats were shut out of the weekly SEC awards as Chandler Parsons was named Player of the Week and Alabama’s Trevor Releford was picked as the Freshman of the Week.  Both players had good numbers, but none more impressive than their teams combining to go 4-0.

 – The new polls were released and the Cats fell, though not as much as maybe some feared.  The Cats checked in at #18 in both polls, down from 1oth and 11th the previous week.  Louisville and Florida are ahead of them in the AP (16th and 17th) and the Cards also are above them in the ESPN poll (15th).  The Gators are 19th in the ESPN rankings.  Vandy is the other SEC team ranked at #23 and #24.  With all of the complaints about Kentucky at this point, the rankings are again a reminder of wide-open the college basketball field appears to be at this point.  The teams that go about six through the ones also receiving votes are pretty close.

 – In his time on the SEC call this morning, Bruce Pearl joked that his real punishment was that Mike Slive is making him return for Rupp Arena and The O Dome before saying that his team will not play zone against the Cats.  In last season’s two matchups, the Vols played a healthy dose of the defense against the Cats.  Pearl said that this year’s team shoots the ball to well to do the same.  I assume that means he’ll just double Terrence Jons and Brandon Knight and take his chances playing 1-on-3.

 – ESPN usually updates their Bracketology on Mondays, but no such update has been made yet.  Joe Lunardi did make some adjustments prior to Kentucky’s game against the Gators Saturday and placed the Cats as a four-seed with the dreaded red arrow pointing down, indicating their falling status.  Calipari said that seeding is what he is worried about going forward and it’s hard to see a scenario where they can break much higher than the four or three range.  If they run the table against the SEC’s better teams (a big “if”), the could get a little higher, but that seems to be about the right spot for where they will be at the end of the year.

 – The Alabama wide receiver’s coaching position that UK assistant Tee Martin was rumored to be favored for is apparently going to another in-state coach.  Alabama’s rivals site is reporting that U of L quarterbacks coach Mike Groh will be named the Tide’s receivers coach, adding another small bit of positivity to UK’s decision to give Martin a new contract.

 – On a non-UK note, it looks like some Ole Miss fans will not go quietly into the night regarding the change of the mascot from Colonel Reb to Colonel Black Bear.  They have started placing these billboards in Mississippi to gain support for beating up the Black Bear or something.  I don’t know.  Doesn’t seem like a great idea, though.

– Not to be lost at the end, the UK women’s basketball team has a massively huge game tonight at home against Tennessee.  The Cats enter the game ranked 18th in the nation and two games behind the fourth-ranked Lady Vols in the SEC race.  There are a few tickets available and Mitch Barnhart will be giving away some men’s basketball tickets at the game to those who purchased their tickets in advance.  Get yourself all geared up by reading this Matthew Mitchell interview on the SEC’s official site.

If you missed this morning’s show, there was a lot to talk about as Matt and Zach discussed the game in Gainesville, Mitch Barnhart’s contract extension and the lingering feud with Mr. Photogenic.  You can listen to the podcast below.

Thanks to our recent play, these next 2 games are huge. Not because of conference play, but long term implications. If we were to God Forbid loose both these games, we go from a 2 seed a week ago, to 8-12/BUBBLE TEAM unless we dominate the SEC Tourny. Don’t like the smell of things right now.

We’re not a bubble team unless we go 0-for-the rest of the season. We’ll probably end up with a 4 seed, maybe a 3. And does anyone know Hopson’s status for Tuesday? I know he was hurt last week but I haven’t heard anything else.

Cute couple for Fans Of The Day but she shouldn’t be putting her hand there. It sends the wrong message to the kids. Falling to 18 in the polls is pretty good. Not so high that if anybody beats us, the fans would storm the court…well maybe Indiana would. But still rated high enough to be relevant and see our scores on ESPN. Kind of takes the pressure off the boys. If the UK players would just read the comments on this site everyday they’d pick up some valuable pointers to improve their game. Cal should make it part of their daily routine. I firmly believe many of the KSR commenters know more than any coach we’ve ever had at Kentucky because we analyze the games for free out of our passion. Chandler Parsons wins SEC Player Of The Week? Really? What did he do but make life miserable for the best fan base in the nation? He shouldn’t be honored for that. The Purnell Old Folks sausage people should have a special variety of sausage named after Terrence Jones, just as long as it’s whole hog. The players dream of the NBA when they should be enjoying the adoration of Big Blue fans for four years. Their priorities are out of whack when they choose money over love. The NBA chews em up and spits em out. Fortunately there are the European leagues. And Czech chicks are hot. It seems amazing that there isn’t an African professional basketball league which would open up more basketball playing job opportunities for the ones who won’t make it to the bigtime like Peyton Siva. Russian women are pretty hot too. But I don’t like vodka. Russians, as a people generally like black bears, I don’t know what their problem is in Mississippi. Tequila is good though. I’ll bet Vargas likes tequila but somehow I picture Brandon Knight as a wine man. How come they never have a good British basketball team in the Olympics? Won’t be long til Valentine’s Day but just remember Jorts, women weaken legs. But I guess the average Brit doesn’t really play much basketball. Go Cats!

We have to find a way to win these close games. I think that in end of game situations, Knight and Miller should be the primary ball handlers. And, unless Jones is on the block, he shouldn’t touch it…And he has to look to pass out of double teams and not force up bad shots. JMO

6 – I agree man. I don’t know why at the end of every close game we run sets ONLY for Jones and Knight (ok we did run one for Lamb at Alabama). Why do we continue to set up Jones on the three point line? How about letting Darius be the screener and then he can pick and pop or roll to the rim? He would be much more of a threat than Jones as the screener. Or even screen with Lamb. Let Jones stay close to the rim for an offensive rebound or if his man leaves him to rotate.

Matt’s depiction of the junkies is completely off and he clearly has no idea what he’s talking about. Pursue this and it’ll be more of a debacle than Boston was. I’m kind of embarrassed for him.

…from Seth Davis: “I stand by my earlier assertions that by the time the NCAA tournament rolls around, Kentucky is going to be the best team in the SEC. The Wildcats are thisclose to figuring out how to win. That was clear last week in their near-misses at Ole Miss and Florida. Even so, I still believe John Calipari needs to recruit a few high-character players he knows are going to be around for a few years. Yes, you have to have lottery-level talent to win an NCAA championship, but you can’t get that trophy when you are this dependent on freshmen.”
