UK Fans of the Day Want Afternoon Notes

A few notes as you get ready to bring the three or four Auburn basketball fans down from their emotional high…

 – In an his weekly appearance on Mike and Mike, which is sadly void of Rays talk these days, Dick Vitale absolutely blasted the NCAA for the inconsisticies in their rulings and again spoke to how disappointed he was in hearing Enes Kanter could not play.  Just as you can tell the difference in your baby’s crying (what?  wrong demographic?), you can tell the difference in Vitale’s yelping.  He was angry.

– In case you still haven’t felt comfortable declaring this a blowout tonight because your Georgia hangover still has you uncertain, the spread for the Auburn game is -24.5.  It’s UK’s biggest line of the season. They were 24-point favorites against Penn.  Chris Porter ain’t walking through that door.  And, sadly, neither is Scotty Pohlman.

 – The frustrations with the play of some of the starters and the potential of a blow-out seems to create a perfect storm for the Hood-Vargas-Poole-Polson quartet tonight at Rupp.  They could get some significant clock and there’s potential to come away from this game with the optimism of a new rotation player starting to emerge.  But, as Cal has said repeatedly, it’s going to have to start on the defensive end and then work it’s way to points.  Let’s see if Hood has started to make that progression.

 – With the bad news of Nick Martin’s de-commitment hitting last night, the football Aaron says he’s hearing that UK is trying to set up a meeting with Martin to discuss the change of heart.  If that doesn’t happen or if there remains no change in his plans, the staff will move on to their next level of targets for the offensive line.

 – Non-UK note:  Oregon might have lost last night, but it didn’t stop Nike from placing this in newspapers tomorrow.  Step up your game, Fan Outfitters!

And, finally, in case you missed it, here’s the podcast from today’s edition of Kentucky Sports Radio, which featured a little something for the ladies (Matt talking about “The Bachelor”) and a little something for the men (Handsome Jimmy calling in).  Check it out below.

How bout I explain the difference between Newton and Kanter real quick so we can get on with our lives. Kanter accepted money from a pro team to play professional basketball which disallows you from playing amateur sports. Newton’s Dad ASKED for money to have his son play college ball and no proof of money changing hands has been found, unlike Kanter. The next question should be “How much was UK paying Kanter to play for them” if you want to compare it to Newton.

Uh, those fans of the day are not hot women. I can tell. You need to step up your game Beez. (what’s up with the crumpled pizza?)

So, when Auburn’s BCS Championship is vacated, is Oregon the new champ or will there just be no champion for this season. You know some Thameltoe wannabe is digging like a mo fo right now. This pay for play is not over as much as Auburn and NCAA want it to be.

Why is Calipari speaking at the MLK thing? 4 most hated people by Kentucky fans are Barack Obama, Tubby Smith, Joker Phillips, and Louis Coleman even though he’s dead. Don’t believe me, start a thread on any UK message board and see what reaction you get.

#6 Captain Obvious–The difference is that the NCAA had lightened the requirements for foreign players so that more can play in the US. This is the first year for the change. The problem is not that he accepted money from a professional team–per the new rules that is okay. However, what they hung their hat on is that he received $33K in extra benefits which he used some for school. If the check were cut directly to the school for the $20K we would be discussing the $13K extra. The argument then becomes that the precedent has been set that players have been able repay that amount, sit out X number of games and play. The kid was 15 years old and thought they were doing the right thing. This is the gray area that has everyone upset. New rules, followed the rules in a manner they believed was correct, did not hide anything and asked for a little lattitude in making Kanter eligible.

However, every college athlete KNOWS you should not ask for $180K or trade jersey’s for a tatoo. If these were freshman you could maybe make the claim but these are junior and senior players. Each should have been suspended and not allowed to play. The NCAA allowed a kid to play because the school claimed they did not do enough educate him on improper trading of merchandise. HE HAS BEEN THERE FOR 3 YEARS. That is a ton of latitude.

Enes did not know the rules but showed that he attempted to follow them. The other athletes KNEW the rules and tried to find a way around them.

Please change your name to Captain Agenda or keep your mouth shut. Carry on.

The NCAA has no problem with the European teams like Mr. Kanter played for. To say it is professional is down right stupid (yes, that applies to you #6). Players are allowed to be paid on those teams, up to a certain point. The issue is Kanter received above reasonable expense. Has nothing to do with the team status.

6 – soliciting for for money is also against the rules Captain Oblivious. The whole cam newton reasoning is that both of their fathers broke the rules and both of the kids never knew. maybe they knew maybe they didnt, it is irrelevant. However, Selby and multiple other players who were paid, maybe they weren’t paid by pro clubs, but still received money, which is STILL against the rules. They were allowed to pay the money back and play eventually. The rules are clear. What isn’t clear or really just non-existent is a set in stone consistent punishment for the rule breaking.

Let me give you an example. I kill and confess to pre-meditated multiple homicide. I get the fast track to the death penalty. You kill and confess to pre-meditated multiple homicide, with the same circumstances. You get 25 to life, with the possibility of good conduct parole. Is that fair? Thats why our governing body has certain punishments for certain crimes. The NCAA does not.

Though I agree, Beez… Come ooon man. Keep the clevage comin. But will take a second to express the welcomed nostalgia of our ‘fans of the day’. If there is one spokesperson we could use in the outcry for Kanter’s justice….it’s Louis “shoeshine” Gill-Cobb. For any of us downtowneez here in Lextropolis, Louis is an urban personality, a form of entertainment and a monotony breaker that is missed. As for the crumpled pizza?! The crumpled pizza?! That is none other than a delicious (only in the a.m.) slice of Goodfellas. It’s been saving jobs and college class attendance for 3a.m.’erz for going on a decade now. Saved my life Saturday morning, as I found myself on 3-way with my pastor (I’ve never been catholic) and my dead great grandmother on a shoephone at 4am looking for sanctuary after the release of the Enes Kanter ruling. If only had Louis to pick me up out of the snow, get me high, and buff off the pepperoni from my Steve Maddens. I woke up with mozzarella in my ear. RIP Lewis.

22 Carolina Blew – mostly, it was like, Cam’s dad was actively seeking money but didn’t get any so he’s fine and Cam plays. Enes’ dad tried to do the right thing and turned down MILLIONS and got screwed. The guys who actually took money were allowed to repay. Enes was not. Etc. Made some good points re issue of vacating games when NCAA cleared the player.

Let me start with #20-the “lightened rules” for European players refers to old rules like you can’t play on a team with a pro, no where does it say you can receive a salary for playing a sport and still be an amateur. The only stipulation is if you receive money for education similair to a prep school giving a scholarship. If Enes’ doctor parents are loaded, i doubt they needed money to send their son to school.
#28 Suspensions are handed out to players that receive improper benefits (John Wall), not to players that play profesionally for years in Europe.
