It was a beautiful day on Saturday at Commonwealth and the Fans of the Day were out in full force. I loved that there was guy in the front row dressed as “Cigar Guy” (and if someone will send me a picture, I will put it up) and the ladies were of course everywhere. However my favorite fan was the guy who wore his “Free Enes” shirt and then taped a “P” next to it. Juvenile? Yes. But still funny. A few notes:
— Lots of football talk everywhere, but there is an interesting basketball story. John Calipari is holding a Walk-on Tryout session for UK students who are hoping to be the next Dusty Mills. Those interested must come to a meeting on Wednesday, at which point the time for the open tryout will be revealed. Calipari came to UK and said that he didnt think he would have many walk-ons and didnt particularly love the idea. But then he met Mark Krebs, brought on Jarrod Polson and now the rest is history. Whoever makes it from the open tryout will be a KSR favorite, so get it done guys.
— On Monday we learn of UK football injuries and the big news today is that we still dont know what will happen with Derrick Locke. Joker hopes he will be able to play against Georgia, but it still is uncertain. Qua Huzzie is out against the Bulldogs, while Dequin Evans should be good to go. A healthy Derrick Locke should be a huge impact against a team that as Joker Phillips said today, looks to good to have four losses.
— Some talk on the radio show today about Larry Glover apparently saying that Steve Spurrier made a backhanded comment to Joker Phillips before the game. Glover apparently said that Spurrier told Joker before the game that Kentucky had a “nice little team” and that he hoped both teams could get threw the game “without getting anybody hurt.” Now I dont know how Glover would have known about the conversation or if it happened, but if so…well that may explain why Joker was so excited after the game, and potentially why….
— My co-host Zach McCrite looked up and found out that Joker Phillips did call a timeout late in the game with 4 seconds left, right before the kneel down. I had thought UK was out of Timeouts, but apparently Joker did use on there, making one wonder if it was sort of a “salt in the wound” move. It was later explained that he did it to get the formation set for the kneel down, but honestly, why would it have mattered? A penalty for delay of game would have had no effect. I prefer to think that it was the equivalent of the old Spurrier running up the score payback. I like that a lot more.
— Tomorrow, Joker Phillips will be on Jim Rome, which is good to listen to after you listen to Kentucky Sports Radio.
Speaking of KSR, our show from today is below. It showcases some serious giddiness, some making fun of the Cards and a great line from a caller in which he said, “we love all our foreigners at UK, like Woo and Saul Smith.” Gotta love Cats fans….
