Its the calm before the storm as original KSR co-owner Hubby’s bachelor party weekend kicks off here in a few hours. Because of that, KSR will take a back seat for many of us (although the great Drew Franklin will be holding down the fort tomorrow), but that doesnt mean we dont start the weekend with a flurry:
— Recruiting continues to be John Calipari’s forte and seems to only get better. I spoke with someone who covers recruiting today and they told me that Calipari will likely sign five guys for 2011, with Gilchrist, Teague and likely either Davis or Miller as three. The other two signees will likely include one shooting guard (I think UK wants Trevor Lacey) and then a wildcard depending on who is out there (Wroten, Behanan, etc). Such a class would once again give UK the #1 overall class and it likely wouldnt be close. What is interesting to see is that if Kentucky gets Davis, that could push Miller to Louisville….setting up quite a rivalry at the same spot in the same class in the same state.
— Today Scott Padgett was officially announced as an Assistant Coach at Manhattan. We love Scott around these parts and I got to know him a bit when we did radio for the same station many moons ago. Scott loves UK as much as anyone and was very excited to get his coaching career started. His time in Lexington helped him get the gig at Manhattan and I predict that down the road, Scott will be a good head coach in college basketball. Congrats to Scott and we wish him the best of luck.
— The NBA Summer League is once again being dominated by all things Kentucky. John Wall played well once again last night and Eric Bledsoe showed some improvement in the late game. At this point, the three best overall performances in Vegas have all been by guys with Ky connections. John Wall and Demarcus Cousins are two of the stars, but you have to give it up as well for one-time UL product Derrick Caracter. In Vegas, he looked great, having lost a lot of weight (Cousins has dropped a few pounds too) and being a force down low. HE will make the Lakers this year and could see minutes in the same way that Big Baby slowly made an impact for the Celtics.
— If you have people in the Kentucky area that you think would be good for interviews for the CN2 website before the show launches (we are shooting for Midnight Madness), let me know. We have a chance to talk to lots of different folks, so let me know what you are interested in hearing.
— Finally, cross your fingers on the UK football eligibility front. UK has the potential and schedule to have a good year..but their lines are not as deep as the last couple of years and they simply cant lose players due to academics.
