UK Fans of the Day Want Afternoon Notes

Not a ton going on this afternoon, but a lot went down last night:

— Lebon picked the Heat, that you know and apparently saw. The Lebron special drew a HUGE 7.3 rating, which is higher than the last time Lebron was in the NBA Finals vs the Spurs. I found the special to be ridiculous and was almost like torture to watch. I did however enjoy (a) Lebron’s growing neck beard (b) trying to figure out which way Stuart Scott was looking at a given moment (c) the random kids in the background that gasped when Lebron said he was going to Miami and (d) realizing Jim Gray was still alive. All in all, a great night but I would have preferred an appearance by the old Greenwich Posse from the WWE.

— The news about Melvin Turpin taking his own life has continued to produce strong reactions today. I was amazed at how often the news was Retweeted around the country, showcasing just how many people had grown fond of Turpin over the years. Joe B Hall and Denny today spoke about Turpin on their show and the couple of former players I spoke with who played with Turpin were torn up as well. Melvin is a UK legend that is often forgotten amongst other starts of the past. But he had a long NBA career, some brilliant moments at UK and is one of the best big men to play in the modern era. The end of his life is tragic, but people should remember the happiness he caused while here. If you get a chance, go and listen to our old podcast from “Hoops for Haiti” in which Joe B Hall tells the story of Melvin Turpin trying to sneak food into the Wildcat Lodge back in the day. Great story and a good memory of a guy who will be missed.

— How about those UT football players? Another group of football Vols were arrested last night in an assault that saw an off-duty cop end up with a serious head injury and an on-duty cop assaulted a bit later. Nobody knows exactly what happened at Bar Knoxville, but one thing is clear…the arrest record for the UT football team is unmatched. More arrests than wins in the last two seasons according to the Big Lead and each crime just builds on the last. Much will be made about the Bar Knoxville owner saying he gave “VIP status” to the football players and the fact they didnt have to pay admission. However for me, I think that isnt a huge thing…it happens on every college campus in America for the athletes. But the fight…well thats par for the Big Orange course.

— There are lots of stories right now about top recruits liking Kentucky and the Cats being in the Top 3 or 5. Here is a hint…they all are interested in Kentucky.

— Finally, glad to see Kelenna Azubuike go to the New York Knicks, who have the ability to sign one more Free Agent and potentially get to “decent” status. Kaz spent time in Golden State putting up points, but never being seen on this side of the Mississippi. He can do big things in D’Antoni’s offense and if given the shot, has a chance to see his star power raise a little more.

I am two hours away from getting on the plane to Vegas for the NBA Summer League. I will be on here tomorrow at 10 pm for a LIVE BLOG of Patrick Patterson’s game for the Rockets, live from the arena. It will be for all those “not doing anything at 10 pm on a Saturday folks”…so if thats you, make sure and check it out. Adios…..
