UK Fans of the Day Want Afternoon Notes

I think the guy on the right is the guy from the “Real World.” I am not sure, but if he is, good for him. Anyone that wears blue and is even moderately famous (including BTI) will one day get his picture on here. Some notes….

— The big story today is the appearance of UK players at the NBA Draft Combine. Most of the big players have opted not to participate in the Combine workouts, with 13 of the 14 projected lottery picks not engaging in the workouts. The lone exception of course is Patrick Patterson, who does everything well. Patrick has won over the GMs and Media over the last two days and has gotten glowing praise from everyone with whom I have spoken. As one scout told me today, “if there is a kid who might rise 5 spots just based on what a great kid he is, it would be Patrick.” A lot of talk recently about Wall and Cousins, but I am looking forward to seeing Patrick find a home that works for him as well.

John Wall did participate in the measurable part of the workouts and gave a great performance. He beat Evan Turner in the running jump, but was a couple of inches behind him in the standstill jump. He also gave the quickest time I saw in the early section of the sprint. All the numbers will be up later today, but it is clear that Wall did nothing to hurt his stock as the likely #1 player taken.

— With the commitment of Terrence Jones and the news from Calipari that he wants one more player, it is now likely that UK will use up all 13 scholarships next season, which comes as somewhat of a surprise to me. Calipari said all year that he preferred to only have 10-11 players and rarely used up all 13 spots. This would have seemed the year to not use them all, especially considering the likelihood that he has an all-time monster of a class coming next season. But he has decided to go full bore and increase the depth, meaning players like Jon Hood must step up their game if they are to see time.

— All signs still point to Kenny Payne as the likely new assistant coach. I would expect an announcement early next week either way.

— One tidbit that got overlooked yesterday was the trash-talking by the Washington players via Twitter. Isaiah Thomas, the Huskies Point Guard, sent out a tweet saying how much he wanted to beat Kentucky next year, drawing some response from fans and Demarcus Cousins, who Retweeted it with a laugh. I like Thomas, and he was one of the first guests on the old KSR podcasts, making an appearance on our third episode (with Tomlin thinking it was the real Isiah Thomas until about two minutes in). Good-natured trash talking doesnt bother m, but it is clear that the heat in Maui when those two teams play will be scorching.

Its a great Friday and if you are a lady, come out to the Bachelor’s Auction tonight for charity at Bakers 360 in Lexington at 7 pm. Lots of local men are being auctioned off, including me for some strange reason. Lots of local media personalities, lawyers, doctors, etc are part of the festivities and I am sure there will be lots of mirth and hilarity. We will be taping our podcast at the event (basically so Drew and Hubby can make fun of me) with Dave Baker, for release on Sunday. It should be fun, so come out and have fun.

More all day….
