UK Fans of the Day Want Afternoon Notes

Time to get after it, with at least half of the notes below guaranteed to not be #wrongonpurpose:

— The big news of the day is the best news of the day. John Calipari made his definitive statement today, twittering to the UK fans that he would be the Coach of Kentucky next year. Some nattering nabobs have come out of the woodwork (like Dan Wetzel, who I generally like) and have said they dont believe it, but at this point I dont know what else they want Calipari to do. As I tweeted last night, the one thing he had not done was give a definitive statement saying he would be back. He did that. There is really nothing else he can do. I will take Calipari at his word and we can now focus on the more important things, like getting a Power Forward and a summer of fun.

— The one piece of news yesterday that wasnt talked about a lot was the decision to move Rob Mullens as the day to day administrator over basketball in the Athletic Department office. Mitch Barnhart is still the AD, but will focus more on the other sports and the day to day oversight will come from Mullens. I admit that with the news of Strickland and the Canada tour, this didnt hit my attention yesterday and it should have. As I have written on here before, relations between Calipari and Mitch were cool at times, and it was a factor in some of the disconnect between the Athletic Department and the Coach. This move is great for all parties as it allows Mitch to focus on football and the non-revenue sports (where he has truly been masterful) and allow someone else to oversee basketball (where his relations with coaches have been chilly). I dont think it is a coincidence that after that move was made official, we got a statement like we did from Calipari today.

Eloy Vargas will be on campus this weekend and could be piece one of the Calipari Power Forward puzzle to fall into place. Many believe that he is a potential commit while on the visit, although that might be postponed slightly with the late interest shown by North Carolina. Vargas is not a star, but he is a player who can get it done and be more than serviceable for UK. Getting him would alleviate a lot of worries over the next few days.

Next Wednesday is D-Day for Terrence Jones if he is going to sign a Letter of Intent, which he claimed he would. Kentucky or Washington…will he become a Cat? And if he does, will Kenny Payne join the force as well? Should be interesting.

— A big kudos to Michael Bradley as the former Cat has been named the head coach of the Summit Country Day High School basketball team in Cincinnati. Bradley spent time at Kentucky and Villanova, before playing a few years in the NBA. He came back to be close to his wife in the Kentucky area and will now get it done in Cincy on the court. We wish him luck.

— People can criticize Lebron all they want, but his supporting cast was nonexistent in the last four games. I dont know if he will make a move, but he has to have help. MJ had Pippen, Kobe had Shaq and Gasol, Bird had McHale and Parrish, Magic had Kareem and Worthy. Lebron has nothing…and NO ONE seems to remember that.

More all day as we head for a great weekend to rest, watch the Preakness and get ready for Blogger Contests….
