UK Fans of the Day Want Afternoon Notes

BTL5F9wIcAA3hAb

It is hot and sunny in New York City and I am very sweaty. The only response clearly is to take a few notes:

— I have been pleasantly surprised at the generally positive reaction to Saturday’s game from UK fans. Now that doesn’t mean that fans are not disappointed…in fact, from the ones I have spoken with, most are EXTREMELY disappointed. But we haven’t seen any of the “jump ship” mentality that I thought could come after the unfortunate loss. Most people realize this is a rebuilding process and the vast majority also now accept that we were much lower on the totem pole of talent than we realized before. Thankfully for Mark Stoops, he has built up a great deal of good will since the beginning of his tenure, in large part due to the stellar recruiting and the work on the PR front. For most of the year, he has emphasized just how far this team had to go, but recent positive comments and the general excitement behind starting a new year had people expecting more. I assume we will see improvement from the team…it is almost impossible to believe it wouldn’t happen. But what I hope I see even more is continued excitement from the fanbase. I worried that we were in for a quick jumping of ship, but if early indications are at all representative, I don’t think this will happen. The UK fan base still believes in what Stoops is saying…assuming of course we don’t lose to Miami (OH) on Saturday.

— The most obvious move (besides the QB decision) after the game on Saturday now seems to be a possibility as Mark Stoops suggested last night on his radio show that Bud Dupree could move back to Linebacker. The decision to take Dupree to Defensive End made sense at the time, but because of the depth at the position (including Freshman Jason Hatcher) and the dire need at Linebacker (where the play on Saturday was atrocious to say the least), the move now seems rational. Dupree was so good in space last year and led the team in tackles and was the lone bright spot on the defense. If the team moves him back to Linebacker (whether MLB or OLB), it will give many more options and allow for some stability at a position of weakness. If Dupree was disrupting things on the line, then staying the course would be prudent. But he was basically a non-factor on Saturday. A move to his more natural position could be in order.

— It is important to remember that we are headed for a big weekend for UK basketball upcoming. The Calipari Fantasy Camp will start on Saturday and as in the past, KSR will have exclusive coverage throughout. You will be there behind the scenes as we give you all the happenings from the event as former Cats come on campus, interact with the new Cats and UK “Reunion” weekend takes place. This all leads up to the Alumni Game on Monday night where, once again, the KSR staff will be there to give you all you need to know. Basketball kicks off for real this weekend and this will be the place to be.

Tyler Ulis will ultimately choose between Kentucky and Michigan State. I still think the Cats are the favorite and Ulis will join Trey Lyles as future Cats. But as we learned with Emmanual Mudiay, you never know until you know. I like Ulis as the Point Guard recruit, in part because I think you get him for multiple years. That has never been an option for UK at the position, but we may now see it for the first time.

More later as I now have to go because the saucy Italian journalist is distracting me once again.

I don’t understand how coaches couldn’t possible know that Smith should have started at Quarterback, they have watched these guys play for months now, also don’t know or see why it would take a game under their belts before they realized Dupree should play linebacker. What the hell is pratice for?

Any word on how Patrick Towles is doing? I know he is on the 3rd string and is a roll player but I really thought at one time he was going to be the future of the program. Saw him play in high school and it looked like he had high D-1 talent. Guess trouble with learning system or reading defenses?

Matt, its crazy you say that cause all of the posters I seen on the Cats Illustrated were jumping ship bad. It was actually quite shocking. A lot of them were harping over the fact we should have hired Petrino because we would have won quicker and it would be worth him leaving in a year or 2. What they do not realize is we would be right back in the situation we are now. Stoops will turn it around. People got to caught up in the positive momentum of recruiting and thought it would immediately have an effect. Face it, Western had more talent and wanted the game more. Stoops is the right choice to get us where we need to go.

Dupree didn’t lead the team in tackles, Avery had 44 more tackles last season.

    1) Believe it or not, sometimes guys play differently in practice than on the field. Reports said Max through several picks in practice and Jalen did not.

Coaches don’t just arbitrarily make decisions. They put forth the best team they can.

I won’t give up on Football but I sure look forward – whoops that Western KY quaterback just faked a run to the left and then threw back right to the tight end again – to Basketball.

9, most of our fan-base are not the KSR or blog types. They do not get online to vent or act like a child. There are those that got on here and are as fair weathered as they come, but for the most part, the fans have not been that bad.

My favorite thing about the fans that have overreacted to this game is that they along with everyone else pretty much agreed that this year was a probable 4 wins. I just love the reaction when things go a little awry when UK loses it 1st game.

I sincerely believe we have no motivation to beat WKU. It has happened more often than it should.
If you recall the WKU glory days of the 70s, it was the same scenario.

I don’t gauge this team by this past weekend, but if these guys are serious, they will handle Miami and win going away.

and Matt, don’t you have a camera on your phone to share the scenes?

Disappointed is an understatement. #9, the average Rivals ranking of UK’s five classes now playing was 49th, while Western’s was 90th. UK got beat by a less talented team, point blank period. Were the upperclassmen poisoned by Joker staff coaching, have they not “bought in”, or was recent preparation deficient? Prior success of the current staff elsewhere discredits the last of those, predicting we’re in for more than a year, maybe two or three of rebuilding.

Dupree to linebacker is a good move IMHO. Offensively, Whitlow needs to be on the field somewhere, ala Randall Cobb. He has playmaking ability, if he can catch the ball.

Matt, a multiple year point guard is not new to us. Remember Ryan Harrow. That worked out well.

11, I can understand how with Whitlow running the ball against our defense the coaching staff might think he could do that against other teams because our defense is awful. Not jumping ship, love the cats but we should be able to vent to our on fans.

@afidler, what I was referring to is when Harrow was brought in, we were thinking it would be great to have a multi year guy. Obviously it didn’t work out from a talent perspective.

If we have the depth at D-End to move paschal and dupree to linebacker and still be fine there, I say go for it!!! That will give us a much better chance to stop the run! As for the pass, idk, i think we are screwed

  31. Mike

#20, rankings do not mean anything. Anyone who watches football knows that Western has more talent than we do and have a lot more upperclassmen. They were stronger and quicker and it was blatantly obvious from the get go. Joker left us with nothing and for people to think we were going to show a lot of progress this year were fooling themselves. We will get better but it will be at least year 3 before we are even close to ready to compete and that may not be long enough but once Stoops gets his players here we are going to be a totally different program and Stoops knows what he is doing. Anyone wanting Petrino amazes me to no endl.

  32. Mike
    5:43 pm September 3, 2013 Permalink

13, yes there are a bunch of miserable trolls but most of them are actually UK fans. It was my first or second time going on that board and I was literally disgusted with how many people were already jumping ship and whining that we should have gotten Petrino. There reasoning was we could win quicker, then he will leave in 2 years. They do NOT realize that we would be in the exact same situation we are now. Stoops will get it done.

9, yeah I know they do not even make up 1% of UK fans and how they feel. I was just thinking when Matt said people were not jumping ship that I saw literally 90% of the board do that. They do not represent anything about our fanbase, I was just putting it out there because it disgusted me. Like you said, its amazing how they already knew what kind of season we were in for, or at least the ones who were not delusional, and yet freak the hell out when we lose. It was crazy. If people are not smart enough to realize this is going to take a LONG time to get this program right then they are setting themselves up for disappointment. Yeah 3 is when we will start to see drastic changes. We have great players coming in, we will be fine.

I’m content however this season and the next two play out…either Stoops succeeds and we return to the level of where Brooks had us (which frankly is about the best we can ever expect), or Stoops fails and we can finally get rid of Mitch Barnhart since a third major hiring failure really should be the end of him. Either outcome is good as far as I’m concerned when it comes to UK football.

REAL UK football fans have dealt with adversity before following UK. Some of the people on KSR repeat over and over, how UK CAN NOT WIN half of the games on their schedule even before they play them. I do not know why people like that even follow sports. Why don’t you just watch a movie, and stop trying to tell real UK football fans what to think, because it is obvious that you do not understand. When Stoops gets things rolling you can jump back on the bandwagon, because that is the only time that it holds your interest.
