The coaching search rolls on and if Kentucky gets the resolution that it hopes, it may come to an end soon. The latest report is from Kyle Tucker of the Courier Journal, who reports that a source inside UK Athletics says Butch Jones, Sonny Dykes and Mark Stoops have told UK no. Tucker says that Mike MacIntyre and another name are still in contention, but at this point, the three above are all out of it.
While I have no idea who Tucker’s source is, I disagree with at least part of this contention. Mark Stoops is still very much involved with the search and I believe he is still one of the top two candidates. Butch Jones has gone to the back burner, as he pursues the Tennessee job, but I do not believe that he is out of the picture completely. I have gotten no read one way or the other on Sonny Dykes, so I can’t confirm or deny what his status is at this time.
Everyone is desperate for sources and news, and I understand this. But I cannot imagine that anyone intimately involved with the UK coaching search would have leaked information to Kyle Tucker. Tucker and others have written about their many FOI requests to the University and I am sure those haven’t been received with willing and open arms. The idea that the same people fielding those requests, would also leak correct information about the search to them, strikes me as a long shot. But who knows…we will probably never know EXACTLY how the search played out and the only candidate we will know for sure wanted the job is the one that ends up taking it, potentially later this week.
