UK Fans of the Day Want a Quick Coaching Search Update

The coaching search rolls on and if Kentucky gets the resolution that it hopes, it may come to an end soon. The latest report is from Kyle Tucker of the Courier Journal, who reports that a source inside UK Athletics says Butch Jones, Sonny Dykes and Mark Stoops have told UK no. Tucker says that Mike MacIntyre and another name are still in contention, but at this point, the three above are all out of it.

While I have no idea who Tucker’s source is, I disagree with at least part of this contention. Mark Stoops is still very much involved with the search and I believe he is still one of the top two candidates. Butch Jones has gone to the back burner, as he pursues the Tennessee job, but I do not believe that he is out of the picture completely. I have gotten no read one way or the other on Sonny Dykes, so I can’t confirm or deny what his status is at this time.

Everyone is desperate for sources and news, and I understand this. But I cannot imagine that anyone intimately involved with the UK coaching search would have leaked information to Kyle Tucker. Tucker and others have written about their many FOI requests to the University and I am sure those haven’t been received with willing and open arms. The idea that the same people fielding those requests, would also leak correct information about the search to them, strikes me as a long shot. But who knows…we will probably never know EXACTLY how the search played out and the only candidate we will know for sure wanted the job is the one that ends up taking it, potentially later this week.

Eric Crawford just said on 84 WHAS that this coaching search has not been done in an optimum way. Of course, Barnhart has been at the helm. The only silver lining in all this is that maybe Bobby Petrino will be the last one standing of coaches willing to take the job and Barnhart will have painted himself into a corner.

I have no idea who the Rev. Mitch has in mind or maybe already decided on. It sounds like names people have been kicking around are just not the answer. IF I were the AD there would be three names that I would really look at before anybody else: Mike Bobo the OC at Georgia, Derel(?)Mason the DC at STandford and Kliff Kingsbury the OC at Tex.A & M. who I believe might win the Broyles Award as the top Assistant in the country.

Of course the search hasn’t been done the way Crawford or Tucker or Tipton or Clay etal would see as optimum They would not be happy even if they were sitting across the desk from Mitch with the speaker phone on to know every syllable uttered by both parties. And, of course they would want to insert their minus 2 cents worth. Having a microphone or a tub of ink does not make one an expert at analysis.

Although i have no sources within UK athletics, Im willing to say Bobby Petrino will not be the next coach. I agree with Matt about Mark Stoops saying no to UK which is total ridiculousness just for the specific reason he hasn’t had a head coaching gig yet and he has a chance to bring UK up to par in the SEC. I like Mike MacIntrye, he would be a great hire but not a grand-slam hire like most UK fans are looking for. He has brought a probation riddled program like San Jose State up to respectability in recent years which has to be a good thing for him in reference to UK officials looking at him. I hope Mitch does his homework on every single candidate and picks the right guy who will be the right fit in everyway just like John Calipari was for basketball. I can’t wait for the days when all fans are excited to tailgate around Commonwealth Stadium again and actually proud to watch this team play. GO CATS!! #BELIEVEINMITCH’12

The fact is UK is a coaches graveyard…and because Joker literally ruined what little of a program we had…and because it would take at list 3 yrs to even get back to Brooks level…and because we are a basketball school…no coach with a decent carrier path wants any part of UK. You guys need to hire me. Young guys up and comers know KY is a dead-end, career ending job. Only Bear Bryant and Guy Morris left Kentucky for “better” jobs. All others (Curci, Claiborne, Curry, Mumme, Brooks, Phillips) have retired or been fired. For this reason, Petrino is the best choice. No one else wants him. He has nothing to lose. He could build a winner and change the dynamics here. I don’t think any youngster is going to risk his career by coming here.

Feels like harping now but c’mon… this job is a crappy job due in large part to a short-sighted AD who didn’t see the fact that building Football is probably the single most important job an AD can do. Yes, even at Kentucky. barnhart ‘maintained the status quo’ with Brooks and let the wheels fall off with Joker. All the while he should have been pushing his guts out to get money flowing into facilities et al. We don’t know the details, that’s true, but don’t tell me that he couldn’t have worked harder to put football on the map in a conference where being good at football is not only vital, but a HUGE revenue stream.

Part of the reason an Athletic Director can make $600,000 (Barnhart’s current salary) a year is because they have to take risks that other Administration doesn’t have to take.

It’s also part of the reason they can get schools to agree to contract’s that ensure they are paid additional money if they are fired without cause (cause which can be written however the persons attorneys want).

    It’s risk compensation.

Mitch Barnhart has UK locked into a 7 year agreement (through 2019). He can do anything he wants. But here he refuses to make the hire that some don’t think is “pretty” because he’s protecting himself for a future position at an even higher program.

The best thing for the Football program is to stay out of NCAA violation or academic trouble, while winning games. Exactly what Bobby Petrino’s record shows he is ready to do.

So Mitch will continue to milk UK while looking out for his best interests.

When he is forced to make the hire that isn’t “pretty” through direct threat of losing his job, he does it = John Calipari.

But UK isn’t a football school, and no one is telling him his job is on the line here. He can make the pretty hire, and base it on “character”. Something he knows very little about considering his history of his hiring decisions.

  59. burge2
    9:35 pm November 26, 2012 Permalink

We can win at Kentucky, we just need a coach who’s over qualified for the job — to compensate for the lower level of talent that we have to chose from.

There is only one candidate that fits that criteria.

  60. burge2
    9:36 pm November 26, 2012 Permalink

Being the program with a lower winning tradition, no titles, fewer tangibles to offer head coaching candidate we will naturally have a smaller list of candidates to chose from. If we are interested in being competitive we must take more risk than an Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, since they have a higher pedigree of candidates to select from (Supply & Demand).

To be entertaining the idea of mid-major coaches as candidates proves this point. It’s just that Barnhart is trading “risk”, public perception risk for “little proof you can do the job” risk.

Petrino made a mistake to put him down at our level. Yet, Barnhart isn’t willing to risk his future hire-ability with bigger schools (regardless of the level of Kentucky Football — where his current decision making should lie) to put Kentucky on the escalator to competitive football.

We’ve got an Athletic Director who has worn out his welcome. He no longer makes decisions for the University, in considering where the University is in regards to the other Football programs, this is about him.

That’s the first sign that you replace someone in their job. When they are more important than the job they must do.

If Mitch Barnhart can’t make the decision to hire Petrino, then he should resign.

Get out of the way for what’s best for the University.

If he doesn’t, then he isn’t a man of integrity. He wants it both ways.

In 2 years there would be something in the legislature to free some money up for the University to then have a “boatload” of money to hire a very big name. I told the guy he was crazy but it sounds to me now like the plan is a possibility with Barnhart maybe offering very little money to anyone on the list knowing they’ll turn us down and then having to turn to Fulmer, who I’m sure is dying to get back into coaching and wouldn’t ask for a big salary to do it. #86: I would seriously feel much better if “Sloth” from the Goonies was hiring our next coach instead of Mitch Barnhart. Sloth has a higher IQ and is a better motivator / salesman than Barnhart.

    Petrino isn’t coming to UK.
Supporters just forget it. Good, bad or indifferent it won’t happen.
I voted for Romney but you know what? He isn’t going to be president.
Therefore, if I were to continue to whine about it day in and day out that wouldn’t change the fact.

At one point I really didn’t care if UK hired Petrino, however once it became apparent that he was not going to be hired I moved on.
To tell you the truth, after seeing how some of the Petrino supporters have reacted I am glad he is not going to be the coach at UK.
Rational people do not react with such reckless abandon…calling others fools, idiots, etc.

If you cannot control it then get over it!
If you desire to no longer support UK football then don’t.
Seeing adults whimper, pout and act like children that don’t get their way is actually kind of funny and entertaining.

I propose that everyone that is attacked by the Petrino supporters should simply reply…whimper, whine and cry but you still won’t get your way. They just may become become ashamed, if not, it will still be entertaining to watch them act like children.

Petrino is the obvious solution. Barnhart, like many other people, just need to get over the fact that people do make mistakes in life. Everyone deserves a second, or third, chance.

You people saying the petrino camp fans are idiots, how about no, U ARE THE IDIOT.. Yes, bobby P did some dicey stuff, but even joe b hall came out and supported him publicly, saying theres more to most all of his stories that give him a bad wrap.. Hell, joker was/maybe still is banging that newswoman mary jo perino. Ricky P nailing chicks in restaurants, and cheerleaders back in the day supposedly (surely not now haha).. Point is, TONS of these big ego guys do a bunch of scandalous stuff, but only some of them get caught. I want to WIN for the love of god. And one man has the pedigree the others don’t have, there’s no arguing that.

    #34- Agree…but, NO Petrino.
#44- Barney has no clue- and, never has!
    #45- “Short-sided”? You’re being too polite…how ’bout incompetant?
    #57- TOTALLY agree!
#61- Did the same thing with the Brooks hire…

Look, BBN, Barney is totally out-of-his-league and has been…he will screw-up this hire as he has previously. Tired of this ‘talk’…Barney will not deliver-never has-never will.

    93. I AGREE WITH YOU.. They can bash me too. My dad and I are big UK fans and I do not understand the hatred for Mitch Barnhart. I think we are lucky to have him as our AD. He hired Brooks which turned out to be a success taking us to bowls and improving the program. He has improved the womens basketball program and before him we were rarely going to the tournament. In addition, baseball and other sports have prospered under Barnhart. I am confident Barnhart will get a good coach here. He wants to get this right and he will. Barnhart is not perfect along with everybody else. However, his pros outweigh the cons. He can hire a great coach and be successful and he still will not get the love and credit. Lets face it BBN you will never full embrace Barnhart. That is sad.

After reading too many of these posts…am totally convinced that the BBN is so divided that only a ‘home-run’ hire by Barnfart will soothe the passion. With his resume…this is not going to happen…his incompetence is just too overwhelming for any ‘high-end’ coach to consider us. I’ve suffered through 40+ years of mediocre football seasons/hires by some poor ADs…and, Mitch is the worst since Hagan! As I’m much older than many of you – I hope you maintain the same passion I have for UK football/basketball – but, trust Barnfart to screw-up this hire…4/5 years we’ll be going through this again.

Not trying to be a mart ass 102 and 103. But why do you think he is incompetent? His track record with hires shows he has done well across the board at UK. He has made mistakes but he has done well.

My only legit beef people may have with him is not

102- I guarantee you I’ve been a Big Blue fan longer than you or anyone else on this site tonight. I will always be a supporter of the Cats and I wish the next coach well. We all have our favorites but for the sake of the program surely we can all get behind the next coach no matter who it is. It’s obvious that Mitch can not do everything to satisfy ALL of the fan base but lets see what happens before we make the final judgement.

    101. Nice to see all the nonrevenue programs improving, but Barnhart’s #1 and 1a priorities s/b football and bball, and on those two he has blundered badly. In hiring
BCG and Brooks he was turned down by everyone he spoke with. He ended up hiring Cal two years after he should have and then went w/ the path of least resistance w/ Philips. We’ll see what happens w/ this search, but if we end up w/ a Phil Fulmer type hire after all the quality candidates turn him down again – you have to hold him accountable for not being able to recruit good candidates in the programs that matter most.

#106- Then you know that Barney will screw-up this hire. He’s proven he is no judge of coaching talent. YES, I’m a supporter and will continue to be…however, will save alot of money not giving to the foundation, season tickets and travelling to away games until UK wises up and hires a professional to run the Athletic Department. YES, it was much simpler in filling Stoll Field than it is Commonwealth…however, incompetence is just that…however, will gladly ‘eat-my-words’ IF Barney comes through with a ‘home-run’…

This will be interesting to see how it plays out. I don’t think the top names are off the list just yet but if we don’t hear anything by next week (following the end of the regular seasons for their respective teams) then I would guess we’ve been shot down and will need to move on to that second tier coaching list.

It sounds from multiple sources like Mike Slive isn’t going to let Petrino back into the SEC for any of the 4 programs looking. I guess we will see but it looks like the school presidents and AD’s have kind of agreed to keep him out which should at least end the debate on him. We have seen how those “gentleman’s agreements” have worked in the past though but if dirty programs like Auburn and Tennessee decided he was too much of a jerk then that says enough for me.

I get so tired of seeing the minority of UK football fans be the loudest about Petrino. IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! GIVE IT UP! Once we do hire someone else, those few on these threads that are so adamant about Petrino please shut up. I dont want to hear your bickering about how this program is going nowhere. Please give the new guy a chance to coach some football before you make an assessment. (i know this isnt going to happen- because the dumbest people are always the loudest)

People who are so sold on Petrino are the same ones that will use UK not hiring petrino to not renew or give up their season tickets. I say good riddance. Please stay at home if our new coach makes us decent again.

C-J says 18k fans for the vandy game and UK didn’t count for Samford so they wouldn’t have to admit how few were there. Tough spot for Mitch. Without a home run, he’ll be looking at 25k or so for every game next year.

115 you don’t understand what it would take to get UK into mid to upper level SEC competition. Petrino has done it and he is the best available coach out there. The ONLY reason it would be possible to get him is because of his mistakes. Otherwise Arkansas would be knocking on a national championship door.

118- I understand he is a good coach. If he were hired i would be pumped, but it is evident it isnt even an option at this point. There is no benefit to even bring his name up. People who gripe that he isnt considered are going to be a cancer from day 1 to the new coach. We have to as fans just support the new coach until we have a reason not to (if he doesnt succeed). Being negative toward the coaching search or the candidates will do nothing but hurt the perception of our already down program.
