UK Fans of the Day Want a Couple of Evening Notes

Heard any good controversies today? After an afternoon of excitement, here are some notes from this evening:

— Lots more optimism around the UK football staff recently, as the players continue to step up around practice. Over the past few days, Mark Stoops has made comments about improvements from his Wide Receivers, secondary and linebackers, all areas that had previously been of concern. The optimist in you could suggest that this means that many of the summer weight conditioning programs and the various workouts have led to improvement. The pessimist might simply say that Stoops and company are trying to play the “good cop” to the “bad cop” of the criticism that they had levied on the talent level of the team up to this point. Either way, the notion that things are getting better around the program seems to be perpetuating. Vince Marrow noted that UK might have four Tight Ends that could start at a lot of SEC schools, some of the younger Wide Receivers have stepped up and are playing well and there is some optimism with the addition of Nate Willis to the Secondary. I still consider four wins the high water mark for this team this year, but maybe there is a chance to dream as the coaches say all the right things as we get closer to the season.

— Chad Ford of ESPN once again noted that he believes Julius Randle could challenge Andrew Wiggins for the #1 pick and even if he doesn’t get it, Randle would be the top choice in almost all other years. This should have fans excited for what is to come this year and even if I don’t necessarily agree with the sentiment (absent an injury it is hard for me to see Wiggins not being the top choice), I do agree with the notion that Randle is about to have a year that will go down in the record books. Expect big things…

— The news that Tyus Jones will be visiting Lexington is both good and bad. It is good because it showcases that Kentucky is still in the mix and has a shot at landing the star. But it may be bad for the weekend picked, as he is missing the two shots at coming with the best of the best, the Alumni Game and Big Blue Madness weekend. I still think Kentucky’s chances are a longshot at this point, but that is before the visit. Get the kid on campus and it is hard to imagine it won’t help UK make up ground…even though they have a long way to go.

We are of course in Cincinnati covering tennis and doing the radio show…Ryan Lemond will be in studio with me tomorrow and Gregg Doyel on Thursday. If you want to read Drew and my writings (and please do), check out the site TheOuterCourts.com. We have lots of good stuff there and hope you will enjoy. Plus tomorrow at 10:30 AM ON THE TENNIS CHANNEL, they will air a segment with me, Drew and Ian Eagle. We taped it today and it includes my bare feet…so you will want to check it out.

More later…

Also, you’re cray cray if you think Randle won’t challenge Wiggins for the #1 pick

Unless Wiggins is injured, no GM is going to be be the guy that passed on Wiggins…draft Wiggins and he busts you get no blame (anyone wouldve)…pass on him and youre wrong, you will never hold that position in the NBA again. That is the thought process of the NBA. Randle is a stud, but Wiggins will go 1st

1 5 wins would be awesome, but 4 wins is the “Mendoza Line” for this team objectively…3 would be disappointing and 5 would leave me very optimistic

I would love 4 wins. We need to support this team all season regardless of the record. Love those ADPies in the picture. Media members in “Da Ville” are a joke.
