UK Fan of the Day with Andrew Wiggins Wants Afternoon Notes and Podcast

Today’s UK Fan of the Day had his picture taken recently with Andrew Wiggins. Wiggins, of course, is the top player in the 2014 class from Huntington Prep. Many are calling him the next great superstar. Go Cats.

Notes. Podcast. Let’s get it then…

— Tonight is a big night for your new No. 1 college basketball team in the country, as Kentucky travels to Georgia for the 9:00 pm game on ESPN. The first road game since claiming the top spot has been a tough one in the past for the Cats; UK is 0-2 in its last two road games as the No. 1 team. Kentucky lost to South Carolina in 2010 just one day after the new polls were released, and this year’s team lost on the road at Indiana. With that said, I think UK rolls in this one and covers the 12-point spread. I expect another Arkansas-like performance.

— UK lost in Athens last season but two of the key players from that Bulldogs team are long gone. Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie combined for 40 points in the 77-70 Georgia win over the tenth-ranked Cats last January. Both guys are now on the Los Angeles Clippers with Eric Bledsoe.

— In the latest release of the SEC stats, Kentucky leads the conference in nine different categories: scoring margin (19.8), free throw pct. (.715), field goal pct. (.485), field goal pct. defense (.363), offensive rebounds (40.1), rebounding margin (+7.3), blocked shots (9.3), defensive re- bounds (27.1) and offensive rebounding pct. (.390). Anthony Davis leads the SEC in field goal percentage (.630), blocks (4.7) and defensive rebounds (7.2).

— UK is currently holding opponents to 36.3 percent from the field, the second lowest in the country. To put that in perspective, the last time Kentucky held opponents below 36 percent from the field was in the 1957-58 season. They won the National Championship that year.

— Darius Miller is 20 points away from reaching the top 50 on UK’s all-time leading scoring list. He’ll pass Erik Daniels with five points tonight, pass Jamaal Magloire with 16 and he’s 20 away from tying Dirk Minnifield at No. 50 with 1,069. Give us 20!

— Ally Tucker has the Best of Week One on KSRCollege.com. Go check out her favorite posts from the first seven days of the new site.

cn|2 with Chip Cosby debuts tonight at 6:30 pm on Insight Channel 2, with a replay of the episode airing at 10:30 pm while you’re watching the Cats. Chip will be joined by Tony Vanetti to talk about Louisville’s struggles, Kentucky at Georgia, and high school hoops action from around the area. Check it out tonight and every other weeknight from now on. Again, 6:30 pm (an hour before KSTV) and 10:30 or anytime On Demand Channel 103.

— Also, don’t forget about KSTV’s contest to win free LASIK surgery from the John-Kenyon American Eye Institute. Read more about it here.

— On today’s podcast, Matt and the gang previewed Georgia and made their Oscar picks. Have a listen…

If they can all get along at The Red House I’m sure that we can all get along here at KSR. Come on guys chill out, and if you are going to hate on a post at least don’t be malicious about it. We are all family

Our stats are fairly imposing. We can ooooh and ahhh over dunks all day, but defense wins championships. Eventhough a lot of time we over exaggerate the smallest mistakes and this team hasn’t seemed to hit its potential at the present moment it is amazing to see our dominance showing up in the stat line. If you can imagine how high our ceiling is, it will blow your mind to think of what our year-end stats could actually look like. This team could end up being one of the most efficient and defensively imposing teams ever!!! Those stats actually boosted my feelings on this team.

P.S. How bout that league leading FT%. Now some old folks are going to have to find somehting else to complain about. A Cal team that shoots free throws has got to have a good chance in March.

#4…whew… As a fan, I completely agree with everything you stated. As a guy perusing the comments sections on KSR, you are killing me! I had to take a break and then come back to your post. Love the spirit though!

Per Zagsblog, Nerlens Noel will remain in the 2013 class.

And he’s looking for a team that moves fast, moves the ball. But he’s also cool with a defensive team, and one that gets the ball to their big men.

What team do we know like that? Hmm…

    4) I still lament that we couldn’t put MKG, Liggins, Jones and Davis (along with Teague or Lamb) on the floor this year. That team would have destroyed defensively.

And the crowd at Rupp is louder for a block or steal than for a dunk. Saturday, when MKG stole the ball of the inbound and we got a 3 off it, that was possibly the loudest it was all game.

Sheesh, all negative to start the show today. Couldn’t make it through. Hope poor Terrence had an umbrella with him today. Matt was not on his game, calling Imani Cross Imani Jones and talking about how Terrence couldn’t guard Green when the caller asked why Davis couldn’t guard Jacobs.

The show is normally pretty good. Today was just an off day.

by my calculations…40.1 offensive boards a game is a wee bit high. As i was telling my drinking and strip club buddies Carl Sagan and Richard Feynman the other day “Reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled.”

Drew, Indiana was not the first team we lost to as a #1 seed. We played both St. Johns and UNC as the #1 team in the country. Why am I the only one that remembers this?
