Mitch Barnhart has maintained a steep goal for the athletes at Kentucky. A cumulative 3.0 grade-point average for UK’s 500-plus student-athletes on an annual basis has been the standard. And over the past several semesters, the department-wide grade-point average has just narrowly missed. This time last year the average was 2.93.
The goal was last met in the spring of 2010 when the student-athletes at Kentucky notched a 3.04 GPA
This fall, Kentucky athletes have surpassed that goal again by obtaining an average GPA of 3.03, including both scholarship and non-scholarship athletes.
Individually, 17 of the athletic department’s 20 teams topped a 3.0 GPA, led by the women’s tennis team at 3.82. The women’s cross country team (3.68), women’s golf team (3.64), and men’s tennis team (3.21) were also among the highest GPA’s department wide.
John Calipari’s freshmen-laden basketball team had an average GPA of 3.06.
Barhart has said all along that his goal is to maintain the 3.0 GPA for a full academic year, which has yet to be accomplished.
