UCLA’s Josh Smith leaves team

Ben Howland’s UCLA team is down to eight scholarship players now that junior forward Josh Smith has left the team.  Smith told the school’s athletic director today that he will transfer for personal reasons.  Those reasons are likely his battle with his weight, which kept the former McDonald’s All-America out of practice earlier this month.

It’s not looking like UCLA will have the year many people expected the Bruins to have.  Like our friend Jason MacIntyre pointed out on Twitter, UCLA better beat San Diego State or Missouri, or they’ll leave non-conference play with zero quality wins and a loss to Cal-Poly.

Good luck chasing that title, Shabazz.

#4, not sure, but we had those tubby players for a while.

Yep, and this makes it obvious that Cal just goes out and recruits one-and-done players, sits back and rolls the ball out on the court for them. Not.

We have a pretty good strength and conditioning coach here. Just sayin’.

    6) Yup. Time and again we see guys go to other schools and our players get drafted sooner. I don’t know how they’ll compare in the NBA over time, but look around at the stars of teams who are Juniors and Seniors and were highly-rated. Their coaches don’t play them much early/develop them, let them enjoy the “college experience” longer, and some of them do not fare better for it. Some do enjoy it, sure, but if you’re serious about developing quickly, it’s becoming more and more evident which coaches can do it. Doesn’t stop players going to Howland and others, though.

I know a lot of fans were pissed that we didn’t
sign Bazz. When it is all said and done we will
be thankful we didn’t get him.
I have no doubt that UCLA is getting ready to get
crushed some time in the next year when everything
    comes out.

No need to rag on Shabazz, he’s actually playing very well over there. He’ll still get drafted high and will deserve it. He won’t, however, have any impact on the college game this season IMO

#9 Put conditioning with Cal’s motivation and it could make a good point. just sayin. now does he have character issues? I don’t know.

“On the bus ride home from that 68-58 loss at the Los Angeles Sports Arena, Smith posted “Just lost to some straight bums lol.” He deleted the post within a couple of hours or so, but still was admonished by coach Ben Howland, his parents, some teammates and even some of his Twitter followers.”

Enough said for those asking/wondering about his character!

As UK fans we know that a player leaving his team can only mean one thing.

Best of luck, Mr. Smith, with the AIDS.

#11 I wish everybody was like you! I don’t understand why everybody hates so hard on a 18 year old kids. Every time a kid picks some other school people will get on here and trash they out and act like they have ruined their life. I’m as a big a fan as anyone, I would have loved to seen Shabazz come here but damn people the kid wanted to go to UCLA. Big deal the kid probably wanted to go somewhere that would let him run the show and that’s fine. Cal has said time and time agian that UK isn’t for everyone why can’t some of the fans get that too.
We have Cal here now, we are going to be good every year. The days of Tubby when we had to get a player or our recruiting class was killed is over. If a kid goes somewhere else Cal will get anther good player to fill that spot. No use in hating a kid because he thought he would be better else where. Shabazz will still be a top 3 pick in the draft and we will have a good team too. Why sulk and hate on him. Wish him luck and enjoy the players we got, they are pretty damn good.

Franklin, GROW UP! “Good luck chasing that title, Shabazz”??? He didn’t pick us, get over it. The prudent thing to do here is keep your yapper shut concerning Shabazz and just report on the facts of something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH KENTUCKY SPORTS. Throwing in the veiled Shabazz-jab just makes us look like a lover scorned with a mouth full of sour grapes. Last I checked we won the NC last year. Sheesh.

@24 your a clown they can put what ever they want to on here personally I thought it was kind of funny and I could careless if we got Shabazz because we already had a stout class stop getting your panties in a wad and relax

The guy isn’t getting his pants in a wad. Fact is, these kind of comments make us look petty and it’s really unnecessary. The kid chose to go somewhere else, leave it alone. I agree Yoda.

I’m going to be honest. I never thought Shabazz was going to end up at UK and didn’t think he would fit in well. He wants to run the show and there’s nothing wrong with that. Not everybody is right for this program. Even so, I agree with some of the people here that jabs at Shabazz are a little tasteless and makes us look like we are really disappointed he went to UCLA. I’m sure some fans feel this way but in all honesty, if you don’t want to come here then I don’t want you. We want our boys to WANT that Kentucky across their chests and the blue and white draped on their backs.

Yeah, I watched another former UK recruit Mitch McGary(sp?) playing now for Michigan who looked as though he was lost on the floor.Absolutely zero contributions which reflects upon poor coaching which he would have had from Cal.Everyone best get the Cats this year because next year it will be all UK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
