Tywanna’s Baby Boy Wants Afternoon Notes

Do you recognize the young man in that photo? I’ll give you a hint: At least a third of you will (or already have) name a child after him. It appears that before he was a UK legend, he was a big fan of the Caped Crusader. And colorful hats.

To the notes…

— The big debate continues to be whether or not college athletes should be paid. Steve Spurrier brought up the idea at the SEC meetings of paying players $300 per game. Spurrier’s plan was backed by almost all of the football coaches. While it’s probably not going to happen in the immediate future, the fact that it is being discussed and supported shows how times are changing and we could one day see it happen. I’m not against giving players money considering all they do for the university, but I don’t think it’ll change any of the problems we’re seeing now with the benefits, agents, scandals, etc. If a guy like Terrell Pryor is paid $300 for a game, that’ll just be more gas money for the sports car Booster A and Agent B have waiting outside the stadium for him.

— After seeing the commitments of his high school teammates Demarcus Sweat and Shawn Blaylock, it is likely that Kentucky will also receive a commitment from Stephenson’s T.J. Moon. Moon is the running back who took over the starting role at Stephenson for Raymond Sanders, Kentucky’s current starting running back. He has received interested from a number of schools and he visited UK with Blaylock and Sweat last weekend. Let’s lock him up before his senior season and keep that Stone Mountain pipeline rolling.

— Former Louisville stars Terrence Jennings and Edgar Sosa will work out with NBA teams. Jennings will work out with the Celtics, Kings, and Spurs next week. Sosa will work out with the Hornets tomorrow and then he’ll go back to Italy to continue his pro basketball career.

— The Scripps National Spelling bee has taken over ESPN today. “Embarrassed. E-M-B-A-R-R-A-S-S-E-D. Embarrassed.” As in, I’m embarrassed to tell you how much of the spelling bee I have watched today. The finals are tonight at 8:30 if you’re interested.

— And in “Dallas Fan Beaten Savagely With Bedazzled Chalice and DG Sunglasses” news, Beisner will be at American Airlines Arena in a Dallas Mavericks jersey tonight. I don’t think his seats are with Pitbull and DJ Khaled but I keep telling myself they are. It was nice knowing you, buddy.

— This morning on Kentucky Sports Radio radio, Matt and Ryan Lemond discussed paying players, the SEC merger, and those two new lawyers who have no respect for the courtroom:

Why pay only football players? So they can take their girlfriends out????
No one else has girlfriends? Pretty sure that’s not true.
Female athletes don’t deserve compensation, because presumably their football-playin boyfriends are footing the bill, thanks to coach? UGH.
Pay everyone equally, or none at all.

Of course Spurrier and the rest of the football coaches are backing the idea of paying players $300/game, it will actually save the school/athletic departments money. That’d be one hell of a paycut to the players at several of the schools.

$300k per school, per sport, makes maybe $6 million per school. Figuring 347 d-1 bball schools, maybe double that number of scholarship-granting lower division schools, totals $6 billion per year. That would cover all athletic scholarships in the country. Shouldn’t be that hard to carve out of the bloated federal budget.

Pay these players for what? Getting a chance to participate in an amateur athletic event?

Will someone tell Spurrier that if he pas his players $300 per game that he will have to stop paying them the $30,000 before they sign with his team.

Paying college athletes is rediculous. Where does it stop? Do Tennis players get paid to? Since a football player plays 12 games and a basetball player plays 30+, I guess the basketball would be the way to go. Add up the $300 across all the team sports at a school and you’ll have a huge chunk of change being handed over each season to students who are there to get a free education.

Then when you compare a large school to a small school some might not be able to afford those amounts. It’s a silly idea made by people who have stopped valuing a free college education.

About Beisner going to the game 2 tonight in a Mavericks jersey at least the Heat play in American Airlines Arena now. On TV at least it looks to be in alright areaof town. The old place the Heat played in before that I think was named Miami Arena either way it was straight up in the hood. It was thuglife outside that arena. I went to a game once down there and bums stray dogs running around it was in a complete dump.
