Two more Cats: Tandy and Collins sign

When Joker Phillips met with the media a few minutes ago and confirmed two of the worst kept secrets on the planet.  Three-star recruits Bubba Tandy and Daryl Collins have both signed with the Cats.  Tandy is a Hopkinsville native and is being billed as an option to fill in for Randall Cobb in the Wildcat formation.  Collins was an Alabama commitment and, thanks to Tee Martin, will now be a Cat too.

This looks like a class that could win at least 6 games by their Senior year. Uk is terrible defensively. Yet, the best players in this class are mostly on the offensive side. Faulkner is the only exception. I would like to know how hard it is to say, “look kid, we are awful on defense right now. You are a top talent in your class and I could really see you getting the chance to start right away for us. I know you have other offers, but what I would want you to look at is the opposing teams roster and be truthful. Where is your best chance to start right away? We could really use your help (Dawson) and I’d like the opportunity to see you play as a true freshman!”

Is it really that hard. And YES, you have to put some of these guys out there right away. I’d rather get top guys that make some early mistakes, and lose with them for a year or two, than to lose with the 2-3 stars that come in who’d would be lucky to start at WKU. Maybe there aresome surprises like Cobb in this class. But, it’s not looking too promising!

Hate to day it but looks like more 6-6 seasons in our future. Just looked at Alabama’s signees and they have three 5 stars, nineteen 4 stars and only one 3 star. I know they’re the top of the mountain but damn, until we can even sniff a 5 star, we’ll always be “Kentucky football – Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory”.

I understand compared to the rest of the SEC it doesn’t look good, but look at the big picture. We’re improving. We took the state of Georgia by storm. This has been a great day for UK football! We even took a recruit from Bama! We’re leaps and bounds ahead of where we used to be as a program, and rapidly improving.(Also, note that we have a pretty good history of turning some of these 3 star kids into elite players)

This is the best recruiting class we have had in the past 20 years, and yet some of you are really upset. I don’t get that at all. Sorry but UK is a basketball school first. Get it through your thick skulls. This class is very good for a school like UK. Don’t compare it to the rest of the SEC. Do you compare our basketball classes to the rest of the SEC? I don’t think so.

As far as Louisville goes, The U just fired their coach and Strong has good ties down there. Perfect storm for him to get a lot of Florida recruits. All of his best recruits came from Florida. It’ll be tough for him to keep that going once Miami gets going again. If he can, more power to him, and it will be tough for UK to compete with that until we have a recruiter with ties to Florida.

There are 9 SEC teams with top-25 classes according to ESPN! We are not even close, since we were not even able to hold onto 2 of our states best players. Now, am I a negative person? No! I am alway positive about basketball, but UK football has always never been something spectacular. So I do not mind anyone on here being negative about our recruiting class, because it is just the truth of the matter. Operation win will never happen in a conference like the SEC, and UofL is going to start passing us once they compete with TCU for the Big East on a yearly basis, and a BCS bowl. We might have some good surprises in this class, but almost every other SEC team has just way more raw talent. Joker was talking about winning the East? I do not see that happening, to be honest. We are going to struggle to even be bowl eligible in the future with UofL on the rise! Will we ever recruit good Defensive Linemen? Probably not! Our front 4 were so bad last year it was frightening.
Look at our schedule, and I’m sorry, were are going to have a bad season. Shoot we lost most of our playmakers that gave us shots in games last season. If we have an even worse season next year, what do you think our recruiting class is going to look like the following season?

Don’t get too puffed up. Strong had a perfect storm this year with the coaching turnovers at Florida and Miami. You’re not even back to level with UK yet. Try beating us once in awhile before you start thinking that.

    57) BigBlueMan, you need to look at the updated rankings! Ole Miss has the 25 rated class, and although UK was on the cusp of the top 25, that will be no more! John Davis was our best rated commitment, and an ESPN top-150 player. Yet, we lost him to Illinois, which is ridiculous (they are pretty bad, and in the Big-10)! Joker can not even keep the best players in our state from skipping on him, while our rival UofL is recruiting monsters out of south Florida. Its inevitable that UK is going to have some problems in the future. Look at the schools that we competed with for the players in our class. Most of them were very bad teams!

  64. Justin G.
    5:13 pm February 2, 2011 Permalink

Now do I think that UofL will keep the crazy Miami recruiting going? No. But, I do think that UofL will start competing for titles in the Big East, and if you win the weaker Big East you are going to go BCS bowling. Its a much easier path then UK, and one that is quite appealing to recruits. So even if Strong does not hold all the Miami recruiting roads with the new coaches at the Florida schools coming in, he will open up new ones to top-talent by their performance in the weaker Big-East! Just the Truth! UK might be seeing UofL slapping them in the face in football. Too bad we did not get Randy Shannon as D-Coordinator! He would have really helped our recruiting especially in Florida, and he is a great D-Coordinator. I do not think any kid knows who Rick Minter is.

I think that it is crazy to ever have much expectation that KY is going to get very many 5 star or probably even 4 star recruits. We don’t have very many of them in KY high schools and it’s tough to get them out of state.

Auburn : 3 5-stars All from out of state but they just won the national title
    Florida St. : 5 5-stars 4 of the 5 are from Florida
    Ohio St. : 3 5-stars 2 of the 3 are from Ohio
    USC : 2 5-stars All from California
    Texas : 4 5-stars All from Texas

I think I see a pattern, with most of these schools their 5 star and the majority of their 4 star recruits come from in state. Kentucky high schools did not have any 5 star recruits had four 4 star recruits and we got 1 of those. UK is never going to be real high on the recruiting ranks unless the state’s high school football starts producing some 5 star and more 4 star players

Look, I don’t expect the #1 class in the nation, or even in the SEC for that matter, but I do expect to out recruit Arkansas, Miss St. Mississippi and Vandy. As of now we beat 1 of those schools in recruiting this year. I’m sorry if I’m not drinking the Kool-Aid but I just don’t see all the hype surrounding this class. It will take a few years to see how it pans out but I don’t see anything that tells me this class will be any better than the rest of the classes we have had and I definitely don’t see an explosive play-maker like Cobb in this class. The defense got little to no help and the offense was filled with 3 star role-players… not a moment to jump for joy and kiss Joker’s feet IMO.

The problem with most of you haters is that just blindly believe all the ranking sites and care about nothing but how many “stars” someone has. The truth is there are literally thousands of high school prospects and there is no way they can all be adequately ranked comparatively. UK players have proven that a star ranking doesn’t matter again and again, you all know it. Sometimes 4 stars suck, sometimes unranked players become great. The simple fact is UK classes are usually full of 1 and 2 stars with a couple 3s. This year is 3 stars across the board, so if all you are smart enough to do is base a class on its players’ rankings, this one is clearly better than any in recent memory.

He also resides in our new home state of Georgia, someone get a hold of joker tell him to hit it. Man… a lot of bad memories these days I guess… seems like just yesterday we were going to Curry games knowing we were going to lose but hoping it was by less than before…

KY fans can be completely nuts. This is the best group coming in on paper and by the looks of the videos that we have seen since before I was born. We have two RBs coming in that look amazing… our most heralded TE recruit last year hasn’t even stepped on the field…. The Defensive Line concerns were obviously a point of emphasis with this class.

If you aren’t excited about KY football I am convinced you are pure bandwagon… go back to whatever you were doing before the LSU win in 2007 because we don’t need you.

This team is going to be better next year… it was unrealistic to think this past season would go smoothly just because there was a coach in waiting. People are so down on us these days and we were really very very close to winning 9 or 10 games… turnovers which came from some of our stars contributed to the losses and our fans blame the defense. Our defense will improve… Our LBs are solid… our dline is going to be better… and our secondary has to get better. Lastly how many teams played Auburn as close as we did? The only game we really got whipped in was the Florida game… the rest of the country wins that game? Don’t give up on these kids that crowd isn’t loud enough as it is.

Yes number 81, if only being “really very very close to winning 9 or 10 games” counted for something. Guess what being “really very very close to winning 9 or 10 games” looks like on paper at the end of the season?

    Six wins and seven losses.

As it as before, and ever shall it be, until the university decides to pony up the bucks to hire a real head coach, not a guy with ZERO head coaching experience. The freaking absolute best football conference in the nation, and we get a guy with no head coaching experience.

By the way, I was never on the bandwagon to begin with, so don’t assume I just jumped off at the end of the season. I lost hope when Joker took over.

“Here’s the surprise: This recruiting class isn’t as good as promised.”

    I’m actually not surprised.

I’m as true blue as the rest of you, that’s why I hope for Joker to do the right thing and move on to a school like Coastal Carolina or Murray State or something so we can have a shot at building a successful program. All you kool aid drinkers need to get your head out of the sand. There’s a difference between optimism and blind stupidity. Some of you have crossed into the blind stupidity zone. Or at least blatant denial.

Read something interesting in Cincinnati paper today. Out of all the players on both Packers and Steelers only ONE was a 5 star coming out of high school. Guess ya never know how all these 3 stars are going to turn out.

No worries — Joker’s imaginative preparation and play calling can turn these 3 stars into 6 stars!

Collins must have signed because Joker wouldn’t make him run that much. 3rd down and 8? Just run a 2-yard route.

72 & 77. Why do you expect to out recruit Ole Miss? Back to the point I made in 66, Kentucky high schools don’t produce enough 4 & 5 star players. Ole Miss out ranked us on their class by getting five 4 star players and what do you know they are all from Mississippi. We beat Miss. St. so their money that you mention didn’t get them anywhere and to top it off the state of Miss. had nine 4 star recruits to our 4 as a state. I don’t think losing to USC is any disgrace and I’m wondering that they didn’t go get insurance with other tight ends as Davis was waffling and don’t forget we have a 4 star from last year at tight end that will be a freshman this year.

There are exceptions to teams recruiting well out of state, Alabama does it and others. Arkansas does it also and I would say that is because of Petrino. He did the same thing at Louisville.
