Former Kentucky head coach Tubby Smith received an honorary doctorate of humanities at today’s commencement ceremony at Rupp Arena, just a few days after being inducted into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame. He received the degree along with former governor Paul Patton, former UK faculty member Gifford Blyton and the president of India. Well, I guess three out of four of those make sense to me.
Even if your the guy who likes to repeatedly bash him in the comments section here on stories completely unrelated to him, you have to admit that it’s still a nice gesture by both the school and the former coach who was always a class act in his time in Lexington. Here is a really good story by Merlene Davis from the Herald-Leader which, outside of the UK-fan bashing intro, sums up the relationship that Tubby and Donna still have with Lexington.
I’m not going to start arguing over Tubby with anyone, but this seems to be a solid story that we can take with a smile and a head nod and then move on with all of our lives without bashing a guy who was always a positive ambassador for the school. You might have your strong opinions and complaints about his coaching and recruiting abilities, but you can’t say he isn’t a quality human being.
