Tubby Smith is out in Minnesota

Tubby Smith has been relieved of his head coaching duties at Minnesota. The former UK coach was fired this morning after six seasons with the Gophers, despite leading the team to the third round of the NCAA tournament this year.

Smith leaves Minnesota after a 124—81 overall record and a 46—62 record in conference play. He’ll receive a $2.5 million buyout on his way out.

Tough news for the man who won a title for Big Blue Nation in 1998.

Seems like it was a long time coming. I’ve read several articles in the Minnesota media from the past few years and it seems as though he was on the hot seat for a while. That’s a tough place to be successful. Interested to see what his next move (if any) is.

Sorry to see that, but I had heard he was on the hot seat for some time now. Doubt if Minn fans will get called out unfairly the way a lot of BBN was when he packed up and headed north, but it is what it is.

Tubby should just go ahead and retire now and live the good life – golden years. He could become an analyst on ESPN – heard there is a vacancy since Knight was sent packing. Or he could take up fishing – maybe Joe B. and Denny have some extra room on that fishing boat! Wish him the best wherever he goes.

Well, OBVIOUSLY the people in Minnesota are racist and their program just wants to “win at all costs”. I can’t believe they’d fire a man who won a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!! It was 15 years ago with players he didn’t recruit, but still!

    From Minnesota:
Tubby was fired because he failed to demonstrate improvement in players he recruited. there was no progression of skills and no demonstration of fundamentals: poor FT shooting, etc. He also seems tired of it all and unhappy. his interviews showed this. there was no energy left in the tank – and the losses to terrible big ten teams were unacceptable after being ranked in the top 10 of the country. I am not sure that Minnesota will ever make the final four but it was time for a change. Unfortunately he got an extra 1 million buyout from a contract negotiation last year. This should help cover any hard feelings. He helped the program in ways but in others he failed. Clearly we are not positioned to get either of the 2 minnesota recruits who are in the top 10 of the country of next years high school seniors. Minnesota is a decent job but agree it is not clear who will be willing to take it or do as reasonable job as he did.

    50) Why would UCLA want Tubby? The whole problem with BH was not reaching the FF, slow boring style of play, plus players getting in trouble and transferring. Sounds to me like Tubby 2.0!
Just look at the records Tubby was a average coach at best who has made a living off of 1 season 15 years ago. Smart is a lot better possibility then Tubby for UCLA.
If Tubby had been white he would have been fired at UK 5 years earlier!

  59. Dr. Funke

My question is did UM really think Tubby was going to come in and win championships there when he was barely making the tournament at UK? Tubby is a really good coach but he is never going to have top notch talent. He should come back to the SEC where expectations are rediculously low. If Tubby did the same thing at LSU or Auburn that he did at UM, he would be loved for it.

Not sure Pitino understands the state of the Minnesota program with a 30-50% transfer rate of players under Tubby and low level recruits as it is. As #55 noted, if there was semblance of recruiting and energetic/helpful assistants it would be a different program and it would be a loss. AS it is he was hanging on his reputation from years past. Minnesota is just hoping for someone who can at least do 9-9 or 10-8 in the conference and not 8-10 as Tubby has done in the past. It takes only a little bit to move to the middle of the pack from the bottom.

I have never understood this garbage that so many people spew about Tubby only won the championship beacause he had Pitino’s players. Who the hell should care, we won the championship didn’t we, people should have been happy. It should not matter who the coach was as long as we won. Do you want to take down that championship banner because Tubby won it, I don’t think so. If you go back and check, not one single person was picking UK to win it that year in the pre-season. We were ranked in the bottom half of the top twenty-five, even with Pitino recruits. His last two recruiting classes were really weak anyway. The year after winning in 1996 he only signed one recruit, Magloire. The next year Michael Bradley, Myron Anthony, and Ryan Cohen, I believe his name was. Before he left UK for Boston, he had gotten committments from J.P. Blevins and Jamon Brown for the next year. Tell me that weak ass recruiting did not hurt Tubby for a few years. Tubby has always been a true gentleman and represented UK in a high fashion while he was the coach here. Since so many of you do not want to give him any credit for winning with less talent than an awful lot of teams in ’98, why don’t we get a petition going and have UK take that championship banner down and strike that championship from our record? Since Tubby did not recruit the players on that team it should not count.

jimp, spot on. It’s amazing some people are literally upset about winning an NCAA championship and come up with reasons why it shouldn’t count.

    Tubby Smith record at Kentucky:

    1998 — 1999 — 28-9 overall, 11-5 SEC, SEC tournament Champions, NCAA Elite 8

    1999 — 2000 — 23-10 overall, 12-4 SEC, SEC regular season Champions (tied), NCAA 2nd round

2002 — 2003 — 32-4 overall, 16-0 SEC, SEC regular season Champions, SEC tournament Champions, Granted #1 seed NCAA tournament, NCAA Elite Eight

2003 — 2004 — 27-5 overall, 13-3 SEC, SEC tournament Champions, Granted #1 overall seed NCAA tournament, NCAA 2nd round

2004 — 2005 — 28-6 overall, 14-2 SEC, SEC regular season Champions, SEC tournament runner-up, NCAA Elite Eight

    72 … Amen!

I am SO SICK of the whining about how Tubby won with Pitino’s players. That says more POSITIVE about Tubby’s coaching than negative.

That team was NOT expected to hang a banner at any point during the year … preseason, during season, or start of the tourney.

But we did. Not “in spite” of Tubby, but largely BECAUSE of him.

Some point to a comment Pitino had made at the end of the previous season where he said something along the lines of “next year’s team will be our best pressing team.”

Anyone who knows Pitino and looked at that roster KNEW that was all about Pitino being Mr. Positive and trying to get that team to believe in itself. (Read his books for crying out loud. He used this sort of motivation on players all the time. And for good reason … it often works like a charm! See Mark Jackson.)

    Here’s what irks me…

We bitch and moan about how we’re portrayed … then we turn around and say “he shouldn’t be in the rafters because (insert bogus excuse).”

    Gimme a break.

So what your basically saying #’s 72-75 is you had rather have mediocrity be ranked some where from 20 -40 win the sec and make the NCAA but not compete for the championship as too go Cals way of recruiting the best possible who you know aren’t going to say longer then 2 years and possibly 1 year but you will be competing for FF and championships 3 out of 4 years with a down year sprinkled that you might not make the NCAA.
Agian its opinion? I think at Uk we should compete for the title we have won over 2000 games so 20 win seasons Realy doesn’t do anything for me. I would rather go Cals way and try for banners. No way do I think Tubby deserves to be in the rafters. In my opinion he tanked out program. If we don’t have Kentucky across our chest we don’t make the NCAA Tubby’s last year. Then didnt earn it.
Don’t forget Pitino had passed UK up. Flordia was dominating the SEC plus when Tubby left our team for the next year was horrendous. Tubby might have landed Paterson of might not have but most recruiting experts had Paterson going to Flordia if Tubby had stayed.

Speaking of Tubby supposedly only being able to win with “Pitino’s Players” from the naysayers — explain this one — Tubby beat Pitino after he came to Louisville by a 4-2 margin — 4 out of 6 meetings — including the last 3 seasons Tubby was there in a row so those would have been entirely Tubby vs. Pitino’s players and none either of them inherited.

No, that’s clearly not what we said at all and the record doesn’t support your comments. We were championship contenders multiple other years other than 1998.

I will always believe that Tubby left because he was tired of the pressures of UK and didn’t want to recruit hard enough to have the chance to get to another final four like he did early in his UK career. So he went to Minnesota where he thought he could do as well as his last few years at UK and that would be good enough and pressure free. Guess he was wrong. Wish him the best though. Can’t see him going to UCLA. Pressure and high expectations is why I think he left UK.

2003 team was one of UK’S best EVER. They were epic. Teams now should learn to move the bal and play half court defense that way. Just had bad luck tourney time. Overall, an amazing team to watch. After that slow regression

85! You might be on the something. Our state schools might be able to come in and steal a recruit or 2 from Minn. now! I’m sure UPike or Goergetown could use anther player or 2! Tubby’s recruits usually are on the NAIA level to begin with! Remember Porter, Adam Williams, Markino Williams, both 7 footers and Saul. Lol

2003 could D up I agree. Something flipped a switch during halftime of the Vandy game. That said that team is a LONG way from being 1 of our best.they couldn’t score and it showed against Wade in the tourney.i don’t think Bogans ankle would have changed the out come

Minnesota was God-awful prior to Tubby taking the job(9-22 the previous year). He didn’t take Minnesota from being terrible to being a title contender or anything like that, but won 20+ games a year and made them somewhat relevant. Minnesota is going to regret this for years to come. Looks like Billy Gillispie has another program he can dig a deep deep grave for. That being said, Good Luck to Tubby Smith. Mr. Keightly was right about him. Tubby was the classiest person to coach UK. GO CATS.

You guys talking about how great of a coach Tubby is do realise your talking about a guy who was just fired from Minnesota after 6 seasons? I don’t think Tubby deserved to be fired, and I think Tubby can coach with the best, but let’s be real. He doesn’t bring in the type of talent needed to win championships. Players like Chuck Hayes, Cliff Hawkins, and Tayshaun Prince were great, but let’s not forget the Lukaszes and Sheray Thomases.

Boy that Sherey Thomas was a player lol. Not only did tubby sign these players but he did it early. Thomas was a junior. Duke and Carolina offered Bobby Perry to walk on so Tubby offered him a full ride when he was a soph. Most forget UK sighned Adam Williams and he wasn’t even all region in high school. The kid wasn’t even one of the best players in his region and UK signed him. Something is wrong with that.
Porter was horrible and had no other major offers. His dad was Chuch Hayes high school coach that’s why Tubby took him. Adam Williams dad was a legendary WV coach.

Interesting diversive viewpoints. I’m a blend of both. Tubby appears to be as fine a person as there is. And I would be proud to have a son play for him. But college basketball is a business. A big business. And results are what matters. It was past time for him to leave UK. And I am not surprised that Minnestoa fired him. Especially with a new AD wh has been there a year. I am sad though. I wish him happiness.

Like him or not Tubby is a class act and I wish him the best. As for Shaka Smart, why would he want to go to Minnesota? I see a much bigger future for him, maybe UCLA. Very respectable viewpoint #94.

Surprised at the hate tubbys getting on here. The man is a class act who done so much for the university and the city of Lexington. He represented us with great integrity and always dine things the honest way. And as far as I’m concerned, he done just fine here. We made the tournament every year and outside his last 2 seasons we always knocked on the final fours door. People forget we were a Keith bogans ankle, noland Richardson cheating and a foul call on sparks 3 point shot away from getting back in the final four. As far as I’m concerned, he should be next in line to have his name put in the rafters in rupp

Go look at Minnesota’s stats. They tell the story. It’s a HOCKEY school! They play in “the Barn”. Tubby had some great wins this season. Minnesota is wrong in firing him.

Tubby did not win a championship. Everyone knows Jeff Sheppard coached the 98 team. All Tubby had to do was continue what Pitino started instead of his boring bball.Tubby seems to be a good person but not a great coach. He never really understood what UK basketball meant to the whole state of Kentucky.

Yeah folks, Tubby deserved to get fired after going 21-13 (in the best conference this year) with 2-3 star players at Minn. while Cal deserves a raise for going 21-12 with McDonald’s all-americans in a down SEC. Remember Tubby only won with Rick’s players, but wait, Cal had Billy G’s players. Tubby is Class. Nothing against Cal, but fans can’t have it both ways. Root for all Cats all the time.

The guy leads Minn to their only NCAA win, not vacated by scandal, since 1990 and gets fired 3 or 4 days later? 5 out of 6 seasons they win 20+ games. The one they didn’t get to 20 wins their starting pg got hurt and Tubby had a bout with cancer. I am not saying it was perfect at Minn. Conference swoons and some turmoil did occur.

Things were a lot better under Tubby than before. The 8 seasons before he took over Minn had one 20 win season. 1 out of 8 twenty win seasons vs. 5 out of 6 twenty win seasons? His teams posted wins over U of L, UNC, Memphis, UCLA and USC in some out of conference conquests. This year he split with Illinois, Mich State, then #1 Indiana and Wisconsin in conference play. They also split with Nebraska (!?), but I am not sure what a school with an arena built during the Truman or Eisenhower years and no practice facility is going to do to improve. Shaka Smart may know and like their AD, but he could get a high major job with good facilities. Minnesota is at best a lateral move from VCU considering VCU went to a Final Four in 2011 and is in the A-10 now. VCU has a better path to favorable NCAA seeding and the sweet 16 and beyond than Minn. Good luck to Tubby in his future endeavors.

Simple math Tubby, Class act + Simply just didn’t get it down last few years @ UK= Leave it at that!! Jeezzzzzeee give it a rest people. Get off the guys jock. Fact “******HHHEEEE****” coached us to the 1998 TITLE consequently @ the end of his tenure he did not bring in talent that was going to lead to Title. Enough with the black and white garbage to both those who lessen his title in 1998 because he is black, or oh I mean because “had Pitino’s players”, or for those of you who think he was fired because he is black. It was a business decision, if he were an orange space man towards the end of his time at UK he simply just didn’t bring it. That doesn’t lessen him or any of the accomplishments he had here it simply just is what it is!!!

This has to be because they have someone already lined up, like maybe Smart from VCU. It’s freakin Minnesota and they were competitive in the so called best conference. They should have been happy to have Tubby as not many can/will succeed there. If true he knew nothing of firing till the report then hopefully Minnesota will never again have a winning season.
