So is Tubby leaving? Well not if you believe logic and reason. Tubby Smith was sighted this weekend in Houston, Texas at the Kingwood Classic, only the biggest early season AAU tournament in the country and THE sight for early recruiting wars. Tubby was at the event with Reggie Hanson (suggesting that Reggie’s job security may be a lot more secure and that “all hell may not be breaking loose”) and saw a number of UK recruits for the upcoming year. IF you believe the experts (and in this case I do), UK is sitting well with a number of kids very early, something that hasnt always been the case in recent years. And most importantly, Tubby has gotten PERSONALLY involved with kids at a much earlier stage in the recruiting process, something that simply did not happen in past years as Tubby left much of the early recruiting to the assistants.
What does this say to me? Well initially, it says that any talk that Tubby is certainly gone and it is a done deal is off base. A man that knows he is leaving does not travel halfway across the country to watch high school kids in Texas. Now does that mean he wont leave in the future…..maybe not, but it does mean that the decision has not been made. Second, it also means that Tubby has decided that the recent recruiting is unacceptable. Tubby is tired of not getting the kids HE wants, be that talent wise or attitude wise. And he is set on changing that….something that has to be music to Kentucky fans’ ears.
In the coming weeks, I will be attending some of these events and will give you a report on some of these kids and their future prospects with the program. But in the meantime, it is clear Tubby is on the prowl….much to the dismay of many of his haters.
