University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

TruTV: Bluegrass Kingdom airs tonight

I wonder how TruTV feels about the timing of the “Bluegrass Kingdom: Gospel of Kentucky Basketball” special they have airing tonight at 8 p.m. Maybe a little reminder of the history and glory days will be therapeutic for us all as we gear up to watch the NIT selection show. That hasn’t gotten any easier to type in the last hour.

Tune in at 8 p.m. on TruTV.

Better than nothing I guess. Something to help pass the time until next season. Sorry I don’t count the N.I.T. as being useful.

10 shut the hell up. This years freshman class in all was average at best and it just so happens thats all we had to play with this year. Where were you the last 3 years when our freshman were tearing it up leading us to final 4s and a national championship. Just because one year we have a down year and our freshman dont live up to the hype doesnt mean its going to happen again espcially with next years class. You can obviously tell how much different the classes are in talent level. Not to mention our returning players.

And another thing yes i was disapointed in the seasons outcome but come on these freshman are just your average group of freshman who should be in college for atleast 3 years. No way we should just ride them ALL off just because the season turned out how it was suppose to when you have no upperclassmen to go with an average group of freshman. Yes i know they were all americans but that doesnt mean that they still arnt average when you compare this class overall to the last few years.

Just turned it on to record an already heard a damnable lie, a black dude was saying when UK played Texas Western, the arena was filled with Confederate flags, those who are alive and were at that game say they never saw any such flags. Its a shame the lies that go on when it comes to Kentucky Basketball.

#25, I saw some film of the Texas Western game a few years ago. The camera panned to the crowd for a bit. Yes, there were plenty of Confederate flags waving in the stands. Disappointed to see that. BTW, I am white.

I thought I was going to watch a show about the greatness of UK basketball. Instead I had to hear about racism accusations, NCAA probation, the Laettner shot, and Calapari’s Umass and Memphis history. Who produced this show, the UofL athletics dept?

#42, A friend of mine, now 74, lives in Myrtle Beach, SC, he was at that game in cole field house, MD, I asked him about that very thing, he says he does not remember seeing any rebel flags there period. Are you sure you did not see that in the Hollywood movie, Glory Road?.

  38. Mark Liptak
    11:01 pm March 17, 2013 Permalink

I may be in the minority but I disliked the show. Like others have mentioned I saw very little on the history of the program on the court but I saw a ton of the usual bromides about UK,i.e. they are racists, Cal’s past history and so forth.

Plus any program that gives Tipton as much air time as they did speaks a lot about the conception of the program in the first place.

Not worth the time in my book.

When “Glory Road” came out, S.I. did a big story on it and had some interesting quotes from John Thompson who attended the actual game in 1966.

Thompson said (and I’m paraphrasing) that no one in the African-American community had any thoughts along the lines about how this game was a racial landmark at that time. That there were other all white schools in the South not just Kentucky and that the significance of the game was blown out of proportion over time by revisionist historians.

Not saying the game didn’t have meaning, it very much did, I just think some with an agenda to carry decided that Rupp and UK were evil and did whatever they could to promote that agenda over time.

My Dad sat in the stands of the Seneca game and saw Rupp and his assistants furiously taking notes while watching Unseld and Mike Redd. They spent time talking to their parents as well. Of course parents of African American players would not want their kids traveling to Miss, Ala, and other stops along the way through the SEC. The ACC I believe did not have a Black college basketball player until the 70’s or until Jordan. I am not sure which. I am so tired of this same disgusting argument about Rupp. I wish Duke had one that Regional Final instead of UK. Who hired that professor who had so much camera time? He is not even old enough to know about the period he is discussing. Pathetic. Would Duke or NC ever have a Black Coach?

A Jerry Tipton production at it’s best. I saw the game and the racial overtones discussed in this ragtime p.o.s aren’t true.
