Towles upgraded from out to doubtful

Joker Phillips announced today that freshman quarterback Patrick Towles has been upgraded from out to doubtful for Saturday’s game against Georgia.

“He can get up on his toes now,” Joker said of Towles’ recovery. “That’s a good sign for a high-ankle sprain.”

He’ll be evaluated tomorrow and Wednesday.

Can he get the medical redshirt? At this point the season has become an absolute joke. He shouldn’t have a year of eligibility flushed down the toilet for (maybe) 1 more win on the entire season. Keep his full 4 yrs so the next coach coming in knows he has a stud to build around.

So when we get the 7th loss do we even let Joker have a press conference next Monday? Or does Mitch fire him on Sunday afternoon.

really? this season is done already…let the kid have his redshirt, get 100% healthy, and maybe by next year their will be a staff there who knows how to use him

Re-evaluate him on Wednesday. Put him in Saturday against the Bulldogs after having little to no practice. Prepare to add him to the growing list of players KSR picks apart for their game performance.

You know what else is doubtful? This talented kid returning to this piss poor football program. I cant believe the guys that “evaluate” players, the ones that decide who should play and who should sit, picked Newton, Smith, and Whitlow over this kid, and only played him after the other guys were hurt. Clearly this kid is the future of the program, and should have been starting every game since the year started, but as they always do, Joker and Sanders act like they all know something we dont and that they are smarter than all of us. Any retard with a set of eyes could have told you this was the best QB on the team…

And another thing…for God’s sake can we stop with the “He’s a nice guy.” BS. My mother is great, but I don’t want her to be UK’s coach. Being a nice guy gets you nothing in the win/loss column.

We had a coach here once. Pretty famous…and he said–“Sure I know I have plenty of enemies but I would rather be the most hated winner in America than the most beloved loser

You might have heard of him… was named Rupp, or something.

So everyone knows this team isn’t very good, we don’t need to insult them at every opportunity. I’m sure some of the players read this. And there is pretty much no doubt at this point, Joker is working on his resume. Unless you know a great coach that doesn’t have a job right now, there’s no reason to fire Joker this afternoon.

Towles was the man when he first set foot on campus. But he never fit into Joker’s system. Whatever Joker’s system is. Two gut runs up the middle and a 5 yd pass? Great play selection Sanders.

Joker’s system is suppose to be so complicated that a true freshmen qb just can’t learn it. Other schools have true freshmen qbs that can handle their system but not Joker.

Joker needs to do everything in his power to get Towels a medical redshirt and try to save the kid’s first year. Then bring in a new coach who knows how coach up young talent.

Joker is going to wind up getting Towles hurt again trying to save his own ass…this season is over, let him try to salvage a redshirt year, instead of wasting one getting pummeled every week.

What’s the problem? UK is no worse than it was a couple of weeks ago when his family demanded he play. There was a recent article that Joker said he had a discussion with him and his family after the injury about the future. Give the kid credit for wanting to play.

Is UK football about a team – or about one player. There are five games remaining. Take a medical redshirt and the he** with your teammates. I do not think this is Towles attitude.

  36. The Sad Truth
    2:28 pm October 15, 2012 Permalink

The Sad Truth – NCAA rules on a medical hardship (not actually a redshirt) require the student athlete to have competed in no more than 30% of the season’s contests (check), compete in no contests after the mid-point of the season (check) and suffer a season-ending injury (ruh-roh). If PT can medically return, his chance of a medical hardship being granted is unlikely. If that is the case, then the best use of this young man is to get him healthy and get some reps in the games remaining. Of course, with a medical hardship still possible for Max Smith, this sets up a very interesting problem since UK would have three sophomore QB’s eligibility-wise. Anyone think all three stay?

Quick, somebody go twist Patrick’s ankle before we throw away a year of him as are QB!

  38. theWilkman
    2:46 pm October 15, 2012 Permalink

36 – Whatever Joker/Sanders say, Whitlow is obviously not a QB. Move him to WR like Cobb and let Towles and Smith compete for QB next year (hopefully under a completely new coaching staff).

Joker said something the other day about how this season is like 2005 – tons of injuries so a lot of young guys have to step in and play, which leads to a run in the next few years with experienced players. Only problem with that is, this coaching staff has shown absolutely no ability to actually coach players to make them better – Morgan Newton, anyone? I hope Barnhart doesn’t fall for it.

  39. Reality
    2:46 pm October 15, 2012 Permalink

No I think Max Smith will transfer once the new coach is hired. Whitlow will play the wildcat and receiver (Cobb), and the new guy coming in Reese Philips will back up Towles.

This may sound stupid, but I think it’s a legitimate question…If Joker were to resign effective the end of the season, could we immediately start looking for a new coach? I’m as sick if this as the next person, but do any of you really see anybody fit enough on this staff to run this team on an “interim” basis if Joker resigned immediately??? I’m just curious.

#19 is correct. Also Bear Bryant wasn’t always a nice guy either. Get a coach and assistants that’ll make men out of our boys. Football’s a man’s game, just watch Alabama play a few times. We also need someone that’ll light a fire under the fans the way Coach Cal can. I want to hear a coach that is really angry after a loss instead of making excuses for injuries and youth. A name like Kirby Smart keeps popping up when I think of this type of coach.

I still can’t believe that Saturday happened. No team can be that incompetent. They looked like they didn’t have the basics of football. Must have recruited them all as athletes. Not sure what sport they are athletes, but I’m positive it is not football.

Towles please shut your pie hole and either get out on the field or quit crying for playing time. This ain’t High School this is the SEC.

Everybody needs to go to the Louisiana Tech official football web site and read the bio on Sonny Dykes. He looks like the guy who might bring us back to respectability. Check out his record while as coordinator at Texas Tech, Arizona and what he has done in just 3 yrs. as HC at La.Tech. If the Rev.Mitch doesn’t look at him then he’s not really doing his job. Dykes looks like a winner wherever he’s been. Two things stand out in his bio: ..”his high octane offense” and being one of the top 10 recruitors in the country. He’ll probably have some connections in Texas.

    # 30….You’re exactly right, Towles never wanted to be redshirted, he believed he could help the team. Towles is a team man.

But Towles never got enought reps in the early practisies to be a serious contender. Whitlow, who is a fine young talent, received the greater number of reps for backup qb because he was a better runner than Towles. That comes from Joker himself.

What was Joker’s future plans for Towles, who knows? Was he going to change to more of an open passing game after Towles redshirt season? One thing is certain, Towles does not fit Joker’s system as of now.

Towles is a team player, but a head coach also has to consider what is best for each individual player. Would a medical redshirt be better for Towles now or maybe a win or two for a failed coach? You make the call.

At this point, I think Towles should do what HE wants to do. He’s obviously a competitor and might feel that he is NFL bound after four years, play or sit. However, I don’t believe Joker should play him if he’s not 100%. High ankle sprains take time to heal.
