Torian Graham is back in the picture

2012 shooting guard Torian Graham is back on Kentucky’s radar as the UK staff looks to fill one more spot out on the perimeter for next season. Graham, who decommitted from NC State in December, called Kentucky his favorite last spring and said he talks to the staff pretty frequently. He even worked out for Coach Antigua this afternoon. ranks him as the 13th best shooting guard in the class.

Sign him up.

Guys, he is the 13th best shooting guard, not the 13th best player. Once you get past the top 5 at their position, you usually don’t get a Coach Cal caliber player. Don’t just sign players to be signing them, that was Tubbys problem. I don’t mind taking a 6’9 to 7’0 that is marginal but not a shooting guard. They are a dime a dozen.I would rather bite the bullet this year and save the schollys for 2013 class.

Well guys, we need a guard pretty bad that can back up Harrow and Goodwin. Someone who could at least bring the ball up court and be an outside threat. There will likely be a few games next year when Harrow and/or Goodwin will get in foul trouble, and we need someone who could give us 5-10 quality minutes, if possible, besides Hood. If we can get either Graham eligible or Humphrey will transfer to the Cats, we should be in good shape.

14 – If we sign all five stars in every class, we’ll never have a Darius Miller or DeAndre Liggins again. Wiltjer is a four year player from the ’11 class and Derek Willis is probably another in ’13, so I don’t see what’s wrong with taking on a project like that in this class in hopes that he stays for more than two years (no one knows with Cauley; he’s certainly got the talent to be a first rounder before his senior year). We’ll never have scholarship concerns with Cal’s current methods.

    29) That is not what I’m saying. We are guard heavy. We will have 5 players on scholarship that are 6’4′ and under and the walk ons are about 5’10”. Who are the incoming players going to compete against everyday in practice if we don’t come up with some big bodies? I think this is a legitimate question and concern. We proved this year that we can win with a 6 or seven man rotation. But in practice, the starting five went against Wiltjer, Vargas, and Miller and the only big body in the fold now would be Cauley-Stein to fill that void in practice.

And dont get me wrong, hes not going to get major minutes and will probably be recruited over, but when will all of us fans just sit back and let Cal decide what and who he needs on ths team. And you know you have to have a full team, you know to practice and just in case someone gets injured. you act like if you sign 5 guys in the top 20, then just quit because anyone past that cant even suit up. 31 – we are going to add another big body in this cycle. That’s a given. But we can’t hope to be as lucky as we’ve been these last three years with injuries. Have we even had a player miss a lot of time since Cal got here? Enes being ineligible was the only setback we’ve encountered. Imagine Brandon Knight going down in 2010 or Davis this year. While we proved you can with a 6/7 man rotation, you shouldn’t just roll with it out of choice. We didn’t want to be that thin in 2010-2011.

This kid was a very good recruit but he switched high schools several times, so the recruiting specialists dropped him in the rankings. He is athletic, can take it to the rack and is a shooter. I trust Sandy Bell knows what she is doing and will not subject the program to harm.

Finally, to the trolls: Whether or not this kid comes to UK, you do not have the right to call him stupid and question his intelligence. You don’t know him, his grades, or his situation. It not only reeks of racism, but it shows a complete lack of intelligence and common decency on your part. Nothing can justify it and I bet your boss and parents would be embarrassed. I am not so naive to believe that these comments will have any impact on Torian, but comments about this kids academic prowess should be off limits.

I strongly agree with number 23.. Matt Jones love ya man but please assert yourself on this one- Your success is largely due to your fan first dynamic, so keeping with that proven success think as a true fan would and realize that you run a site that all recruits read, especially the comments sections. If you can’t keep up with all the moron rival fans posing and posting as though they were in the BBN family to intentionally hurt our image with future recruits who are trying to get a feel for each fanbase then that’s understandable.. I would never criticize anybody for their leadership in a field in which I don’t fully understand the logistics that would go into such things as moderating a forum, and compensating that individual to do so.. However, as a true fan of the big blue my conscious would keep me awake at night, knowing that something- a website that I created, is doing even an iota of damage to the courtship of future recruits. Cal is obviously more influential than all those petty attempts, but he won’t be here forever, and these imposters that parade negativity around have more of an affect than you might think on current/future players and even our beloved CAL. The most important thing of all is that it settles into the subconscious of these 17 year old kids that are absolute heroes to all of the overwhelming majority that is the BBN. It doesn’t matter when you land the player anyway and then they go 38-2 and win a title, but it matters a whole lot when there are any individual struggles at any point in the season- and indeed makes it tougher on our own team’s psyche when playing through a mini-slump. Do you remember how upset Wall, Pat Pat, and Big Cuz were following their first loss as a team? They got a taste of the 0.1 percent of our fanbase that miraculously learned how to use a computer and talk ignorance wherever they had a safe haven to do so. Don’t allow laziness, or maybe the opposite which spreads yourself too thin, to allow for this scenario. It was uncommonly frustrating to hear that young team sound hurt by the fans reaction for their first loss, in a season where I believe they were the last team to drop one. Especially when I loved those guys and they didn’t realize that the most extreme sentiments at the time were from outsiders acting like UK fans to hurt their feelings or just to bolster our glowingly unattractive reputation as KY fans when it comes to wins and losses. It is a misrepresentation that is only encouraged when we allow the most minute sect of BBN to speak the loudest. It still doesn’t compare to the pure disdain I feel when an Indiana or Louisville fan can successfully plant a seed of negativity in a kid’s mind about UK here on this site. I have a simple solution to keep this from happening, as well as keeping this site spreading by word of mouth for many years to come- because intelligent and serious fans of blue notice and appreciate such things: At the top of the home page and at the top of each comments section (and in big bold letters) write a disclaimer. Just make people aware that many of the comments, and typically the most extreme, offensive, or ignorant ones are not the views of the majority of BBN. They are in fact most likely the result of a Kansas, UNC, Duke, Indiana, or Louisville fan that is running out of strategies in slowing down the BIG BLUE’S rise to utter dominance! Matt Jones, kind sir, fine gentleman- please consider the admiration such an act would garner among your supporters, as raising awareness of these crucial truths becomes tiring when moderators allow rival fans to run rampant in the comments sections like wolves in sheep clothes.

I’ll put in my 2 cents worth on Torian Graham. I’d like to make 3 points.
    1. Can he become elgible? We’ll see, but it’s my understanding that he hasn’t taken his ACT yet, and Kentucky hasn’t offered him yet. They’re looking at him, but I looked at a lot of pretty girls that I didn’t ask to marry me. He has a 3.6 GPA. He might not be Harvard material, but it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that he can qualify to play for us next year.
    2. Is he good enough to play for us? He’s rated anyqwhere from 57th to 90th by the 5 major recruiting services. That’s a bit lower than anyone else that Coach Calipari has recruited, but Coach Calipari probably pays less attentin to the recruiting services than the average fan does. Any good coach will evaluate talent for himself and rely on his own judgement more than any recruiting service. One other thing to consider if you do rely on the recruiting serices. Torian Graham is the best guard still available this year. It’s a weak year for guards. Most of the high major guards in the class of 2012 are already signed. There are also some who feel that he is underrated. Everyone who has seen him says he can really shoot. Next season, more than at any time in the history of our program since Coach Rupp’s final season, we need more bodies. Right now we have 11 players on board for next season, and three of them came here as walkons. I know Coach Calipari plays with a short bench, but I don’t believe he wants it quite that short.
    3. It’s not our decision who Coach Calipari recruits. It’s his. he has a really good track record at recruiting. I trust his judgement. Now I know that every time Kentucky loses, you feel the pain. I do too! I understand. Buit if the unthinkable happens and Kentucky should suffer through a losing season, your boss isn’t going to call you in at the end of the season and say, “I’m sorry but Kentucky had too poor a record this year. You’re fired.” On the other hand, Coach Calipari’s boss just might. (To be realistic, this year’s national championship would probably buy him at least one more year, but he would be told in no uncertain terms to get his act together QUICK!) So let it be the caoch’s decision who he recruits. More than us, he will live or die by such decisions.
