Tom Crean has jokes

The fine people at Indiana blamed the end of the UK/IU basketball series on the finer people at Kentucky, and now they’re making jokes about it. Hoosier head coach Tom Crean just sent out this jab on Twitter to promote this week’s baseball game between the two schools.

And the baseball game is Wednesday, not tomorrow.

Fail to see the “jab” here. If he were to say, “at least the baseball team isn’t scared to come here” then we could call it a jab. This is nothing more than an ad for the game.

Most people that are a part of irrelevance feel the need to constantly toot their own horn. I would say Crean is similar to Octomom, or Snookie, trying to keep in the spotlight of finally getting back to the NCAA tourney.

Cal knows Crean is just playing to fans. In fact Cal does this all the time and Crean is just taking a page from his book. Both these guys get what their programs need at this point in time. Once the Indiana program gets fully on its feet again they won’t need the security blanket of Assembly Hall. This series will resume neutral sites in a couple of years.

IU is afraid to play UK in neutral sites, because it would mean 2 guaranteed losses in 2 years instead of one that the home crowd might carry for their lackluster basketball program. Crean is a coward.

It’s about $ for UK. The split for the weak teams that come to Rupp are higher, plus downtown Lex is rolling on a home game night.
In addition a ‘successful’ season here comes down to winning the championship. Most years UK will have first rounders, but even a homer like me can admit this year will be hard to repeat. (POY, great seniors, great shooting guard, etc.)
My point is that over 5 losses will usually get you a two seed at highest. (2 losses pre-conference, 3-4 in the conference. a 1 seed isn’t always a championship, but it is an easier road. The equation works out better if you are undefeated going into conference.

    1:56 pm May 7, 2012 Permalink

31 – UK didn’t make shirts, as it is a university not a t-shirt maker. But a retail store did, and they can pretty much make a shirt for any occasion. You know what UK didn’t do for a regular season, meaningless game? Make a shrine about it like IU did for beating UK in Dec.

  35. Go Deep

A retail store made shirts for ‘the block’, it’ called capitalism, but UK did not create a trophy case and display it. Instead we hung a Nat’l Championship banner.

I’m a big UK fan, have been all my life. I for one think it looks like we are running from Indiana because they beat us. It may be just bad timing for this move but it looks bad on our end. If it were me, I’d love to kept the series for one more home and home with an agreement that it would go to a neutral site after that. Next years game at home would have been an epic game only this time we would be the underdogs. The only difference would have been when we beat them we wouldn’t have stormed the court like we had just won a national championship.

I want to preface this by saying I have been a lifelong UK fan, even through Billy G., end of Tubby’s career, Sutton, etc. my view of this is that it is UK’s fault. Why couldn’t we just keep home and home games? Because Cal and Mitch are trying to get greedy and capitalize on winning 8. I understand there is more money to be made but what about UK students and fans who can’t afford to travel or simply don’t want to? Why take away a great atmosphere game at Rupp in favor of an unarguably less exciting setting? Money. It makes me very sad. I think Coach Cal has done GREAT things here but he and Mitch are severely misguided here.

36 who beat who last? we are “running” because Darius almost got trampled bc they don’t know how to act when they win…so we are running for safety.

37 it gives non season ticket holders a chance to attend the game. If there are 20,000 fans that don’t want to travel or can’t afford to, there will be 20,000 other fans that are willing and can afford it, so who is missing out?

37.) Students can’t hardly get into games as it is. Rupp is not about the students, it is about money as well. You need to realize college basketball isn’t this glorious moral league that everyone thinks it is. It is driven by the same thing as everything else in this world, money.

If you cannot afford to travel, you probably cannot afford to pay for a scalper’s inflated ticket to get into Rupp.

If you do not want to travel, good deal, somebody will take your spot. Also most of the fanbase does not live in Lexington. They usually have to travel three or more hours anyway to get to Lexington. Plus, if the games were in Nashville it would be easier on some people.

I understand where you are coming from, missing the glory years. However, the facts are there were never any glory years. College bball has always been dirty, money driven, and lacking in morality. We just have more coverage now so it is more apparent.

The quicker people start to accept this fact the better the sport will become. Bigger more high profile games and early season tournaments will come to fruition. Better teams will form bc most players are AAU friends, and the marketing will get insane. UK is a leader in this trend let just go ahead sell our souls and embrace it.

    37) I agree. You shouldn’t drop a series bc the other team won’t go neutral. Rupp is home! I would rather see a game played in Rupp than anywhere else. There’s no good reason not to agree to home and home. $ is a sad excuse for not agreeing to extend the series. Yeah cal said there were other reasons but the main one was $. Very sad

Crean wanted to have a chance to hand Cal his first loss at Rupp so he pouted and said no to Cal and UK about playing both neutral games in the state of Indiana. That’s what it comes down to. Cal isn’t running away from anyone. IU is running away from the way things used to be for 15 years. They can’t win anywhere else but home. They barely beat UK last season and got handed a 12 point loss in the tournament and all of a sudden they think they can beat UK? A lot of backwards thinking going on in Bloomington but that’s no surprise.

  60. The Answer
    8:52 pm May 7, 2012 Permalink

It has nothing to do with money in my opinion. The real answer is UK can play most teams when and where they want to play them. We don’t need Indiana or North Carolina on the schedule (Although it would be nice for the fans). Why put yourself in a situation to take a loss if you don’t have to. Who cares who questions the schedule, Cat’s take care of business even against cupcakes and a #1 seed is ours. The ultimate goal is to make the road easier for the Final Four and onto the title. Will there be a question of will the team be tested enough when we make the NCAA tournament? Only if we don’t win it all. Case closed…
