    Matt,
I was talking with a buddy of mine last night trying to figure out what UK needs to do to simply compete in the SEC. We got to thinking about trends and realized that the blueprint for success is already out there… I ask this question, what got South Carolina over the mediocre hump? Marcus Lattimore. Look at this commonality
Florida — RB Mike Gilleslie, Good Defense
South Carolina- RB Marcus Lattimore, Good Defense
Georgia — RB Todd Gurley , Good Defense
Alabama — RB Yeldon and Lacey, GREAT Defense
LSU — RB Ford and others, GREAT Defense
Miss St. — Recently they have done well because of a good RB and solid defense
Vandy — the reason they did better last year is because of a good RB and an improvement on defense.

    Now Look at this
Auburn- No Dominant RB, Very inconsistent defense
Tennessee — No Run Game, Lackluster Defense
Arkansas — Inconsistent run game — no defense.
KENTUCKY — Inconsistent RB — ABSOLUTELY NO DEFENSE

With that being said, Mike Leach is not the answer. You think he is gonna bring a good DC? He cares about offense. Petrino (character issues), Tuberville/Nutt (washed up coaches), Jim Tressel ( couldn’t beat the SEC with a big time recruiting base and the name of a big time school and you think he will be able to all of a sudden recruit players not as good and all of a sudden beat SEC teams?).
The man that UK needs to go after is Steve Addazio. Is an Urban Meyer disciple, knows what it takes to win in the SEC, has recruiting pipeline to Florida, Texas and now the north east, is proven (took a 4/5 win Temple team and won 9 games last year including their bowl game), and is a big time defensive advocate. He will bring the type of defensive players we need and a good DC to help develop them. He will bring the size we need to the O-Line and D-Line and he will inherit a pretty damn good offense. UK needs to snatch him up IMMEDIATELY!

Do people on the show thread agree?

Glad to hear you had such a good time with your free 10k weekend. Perhaps now you realize how when someone with limited funds that doesn’t get the “star” treatment as you do can be a little disappointed when they pay $199 for their son to be able to meet Anthony Davis and he isn’t there.

The reason UK cannot run the ball consistently between the tackles is because of run blocking the O-Line is worried about protecting the QB from being sacked. There is a different technique applied for run blocking and pass protection.

7 An assistant looking to make the jump to a major job is not going to come to UK…he is a much better situation as a candidate for such a job as a top assistant than as the head coach of a perennially mediocre team win team…it’s a great thought, but it seems unlikely

    4 – $33
7 – I tend to agree that we need a defense and a RB to get over the hump, however I honestly think people would be thrilled with Leach. More than anything, the majority of UK football fans just want to be entertained. If we put up points, they are happy. I’m not saying its right, just saying that’s the way it is. But for my money you are 100% correct.

Why not Chris Peterson as UK Head Coach. Granted that Boise St. doesn’t play a rigorous schedule. He did preform against the big boys when they actually played. He is a schemer, which is what UK will have to do to have success int he SEC. He can recruit all over the country, not just in the South. This would be his big change to make waves n a power conference.

Matt, UK has not scored a touchdown in the first quarter since the TN game in 2010. That’s almost a season and a half without a touchdown in the first quarter. You will not win many division one games playing from behind. At some point you have to say either the staff is not prepared for the games, or the players are not ready to play. We’ve seen the past two seasons, even against much weaker teams, we allow them to hang around until the second half.

  25. Coach Durbin
    10:13 am September 18, 2012 Permalink

There seems to be a lot of people that support hiring a “name” coach or demand someone with previous HC experience. I think a lot of this is due to the fact that Joker hasn’t worked out. Fact of the matter is, the following coaches had ZERO head coaching experience prior to taking their current job. (Current rank in parathases)

    Chip Kelly, Oregon (#3)
    Jimbo Fisher, FSU (#4)
    Mark Richt, UGA (#5)
    Bob Stoops, Oklahoma (#6)
    Dana Holgorsen, WVU (#8)
    David Shaw, Stanford (#9)
    Dabo Swinney, Clemson (#10)

In addition to these names currently not in the top 10: James Franklin (Vandy), Bret Bielema (Wisconsin), Pat Fitzgerald (Northwestern), Charlie Strong (UL), Mike Gundy (Oklahoma State), Chris Petersen (Boise), and Gary Patterson (TCU).

In order for our next coach to be successful he must be a relentless recruiter willing to think outside the box when it comes to marketing and selling our program to young kids. This is why hearing names like Frank Solich, Tommy Tubberville, Phil Fulmer, David Cutcliffe, and Houston Nutt make me want to hang myself from the nearest tree. All of these coaches will try to run UK the way they ran previous major programs they were at, and THAT WILL NOT WORK. We need Mitch to go outside of his norm (last 2 coaching hires excluding Joker were Dennis Erikson and Rich Brooks) and not hire a retread. We needed someone with experience when we were going through probation. For this hire, we need an innovator and motivator, and I don’t see that from guys that have gotten fired before. I don’t know if any of these guys are the answer, but here are some of the guys I think would work:

    Mark Helfrich 38 (oregon OC)
    Brent Venables 41 (DC Oklahoma)
Gus Mahlzan 46 (obviously he’s a HC now but he is an innovator)
    Kirby Smart 36 (DC Bama)
    James Coley 39 (OC FSU)
    Chad Morris 43 (OC Clemson)

Having young players in your third year is NOT an excuse. It’s still the coaches making the decisions on how to use them. Joker has had way too many opportunities to prove he’s the guy but its just not working. You have Randall Cobb vs Tennessee, multiple dumb penalties (delay of game in the first play of OT). It is clear Joker has set a standard that is way too low even for UK’s caliber. We should not be satisfied with just ‘competing’ against Sun Belt teams. Like Ryan said, it should be a 30 pt game by the 4th quarter. It is time for a change, I love Joker and hate that is has turned out this way, but his whole philosophy is not what an SEC team should have, period.

I don’t think UK has more talent. Jonathon Dowling is the highest ranked recruit of both programs – 5 star 10th ranked player. Andrew Jackson would probably be the best player on UK. Anotonio Andrews is by far the best running back on each side. Q’ Smith is probably the best defensive lineman on each team.

The difference between now and the Hal Mumme era, and even 2002 with Guy Morris, was that we COMPETED back then. Yes we cheated, but those teams would have blown out WKU. You had Derek Abney breaking NCAA records, we could go down to the swamp with a punchers chance of actually winning. Those UK teams were just a victim of choking and throwing the games away at the end (2002 LSU). It was fun to watch and I don’t remember a game where we just thought we were going to get blown out. We don’t have that anymore.

Hire Brent Venables as our next head coach. He’s put several Top 10 defenses on the field over the years. And, he built defenses around high powered offenses. He’s currently doing it at Clemson. There is little doubt that he brings an Oklahoma style offense to UK along with a stout defense. By the way, Oklahoma runs a variation of the Air Raid.

UK football fans are honestly easy to please. In the 80’s and 90’s support was strong because going to games was inexpensive. It was kind of a lark, just something you did… go tailgate and watch us get crushed at football. Occasionally, once every couple of years, we pull an upset, get to a bowl game, good times. Now the tix are more expensive and frankly our team is kind of dull. I don’t think UK has to win at a high level EVERY year, but we can at least be fun to watch. Mumme ball was good for that, and that’s what we need to get back to. Honestly, I don’t think we have to FIRE Joker, but we do need new offensive and defensive philosophy.

I’ve said a number of times that there are only 3 things that make a team good on any given day. Athletes, coaching, and luck. There is also effort and execution, however, I believe those fall under “coaching”. Peterson is the best at maximizing effort, getting flawless execution and is, generally speaking, a terrific coach. Dating back to their bowl win against Oklahoma, he also has had a fair bit of luck. Importantly though, he has never had a top 25 recruiting class. Since 2007 UK has out-recruited Boise every year but 1. Importantly, Boise is a perennial top 25 team, UK is a perennial bottom feeder. That my friends, is how you can definitively say, Joker is not a good coach. Period.

With all that said, Peterson would not be a good fit for our school. To compete in the SEC I believe you have to draw better recruits, and he has shown an inability to do so. I believe that we need a coach who can market himself, much the way Cal did at memphis. That is, “hey I know people, I can develop you, come here, get to the pros.” In my opinion a big name NFL OC or DC would be the way to go. I am all for offering the position to Rob Ryan. Defensive guru, good name recognition, and a tough guy’s guy persona.

I wish Joker sympathizers would re-read the first part of my comment. UK ranked dead last in offense last year, and had a top 45 recruiting class. We have recruited better than Boise since 2007, yet we lose to UofL and WKU? Time for a change laddies and gents!

Further, unless the bonding issues are resolved, I don’t see the facilities getting any better. We don’t have the waltons giving the program cash, and we sure as hell don’t have phil Knight giving us millions. Despite my love for UK, I feel like much of this is futile, like an impotent man masturbating. We can put in a lot of effort, but there will never be a satisfactory outcome.

Now if people are opposed to Petrino because of his hiring his mistress, well, that will be on our University to make sure he doesn’t do the same stupid stuff here. As far as, “we don’t want Louisville’s left overs”, well, Louisville didn’t want him to leave, Petrino wasn’t a UofL reject.

Last year Vandy played Florida and lost 26-23, UK got beat 45-10……..Vandy got beat by UGA 33-30, UK got beat 10-10….. Vandy also got beat by Ark 31-28… what you think the score would’ve been if we played Ark last year? We got beat by South Carolina last year 54-3, Vandy loses to the them 17-14. Kentucky will get killed by South Carolina this year…. at least Vandy is being competitive and not getting beat by teams like WKU.

Out of my respect for you, I am letting you know that, with a heavy heart, I resigned today as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. This decision was not easy, but it was made in the best interests of me and my family. While my desire would have been to finish out what has been a difficult season for us all, circumstances did not allow me to do so. I appreciate your hard work and wish you the best.
    Sincerely,
    Bobby Petrino.
