Today in the UNC Academic Scandal…

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since word broke about the UNC academic scandal and to this day, nothing has been done about it. Allegations of no-show classes, grade inflation, heavy-handed tutors, and more have clouded the Tarheels basketball and football team’s reputation, but without solid proof, the NCAA’s hands were tied. Until now, perhaps. The Raleigh News Observer has uncovered damning emails between Julius Nyang’oro, the former head of the UNC African studies department, which is the center of the scandal, and various members of the academic support staff with offers for football tickets, sideline passes, and more seemingly in exchange for no-show classes, money, and favors.

Of course, the problem with emails is that it’s hard to determine the tone, whether it be serious, humorous or sarcastic, but there are some very incriminating passages. From the Raleigh News Observer’s recap:

In one email from September 2009, Cynthia Reynolds, a former associate director who oversaw academic support for football players, told Nyang’oro in an email that “I hear you are doing me a big favor this semester and that I should be bringing you lots of gifts and cash???????”

There are also emails concerning a class entitled “Seminar in Afro-American Studies” with only two students enrolled (one an athlete) that fits the profile of a no-show class. If you’re into emoticons and have some extra time, definitely give the emails a look.

Odds Mark Emmert and the NCAA decide to take the bait?

And the response from the NCAA will be the same as it was for the Duke program, “Nothing to see here. Move along.”

UNC & Duke are painted as good guys. Media & NCAA don’t care/Won’t Care.

Nothing will be done. This is why it will be important to punish UNC in the public eye by never letting the story die.

We didn’t look into this because we were too busy taking away Cal’s 500th win game ball. You know, the important stuff.

You want us to worry about petty stuff like this when there are student-athletes out there using university water hoses and university soap to wash their cars with?

The NCAA is again letting other groups, albeit, journalists or university officials to do the investigating for them, then they will decide. They obviously are without the man or woman power to investigate all allegations nationwide, except anything that has UK attached to it or golfers using the carwash as they have stated at #7.

If nothing comes of this the following ex-college players should SUE the NCAA for all they can get:

    Derrick Rose
    Eric Manual
    Myles Davis
    Sam Cassell Jr.

    and many many more!

The NCAA has no time for such BS. There are golfers washing their cars with university water to worry about. And cream cheese on bagels.

The NCAA lets UNC employees do the investigating. They’ll self-report everything while Emmert, paying half-attention, will say “ok, cool” and get back to reading Vogue.

Does anything find the thing about the tutor interesting?

30 years old, died just months before all this broke in 2008 at the age of 30. Can’t find ANYTHING about HOW she died…. curious.

The thing about “incriminatng e-mails” is that people will swear they were only joking or being sarcastic.

11 – African American Studies is a fairly common course of study. Similar to “Women’s Studies” it’s meant to highlight the culture represented – body of literature, art, music, etc. particular to these groups that are not represented as fully in a more mainstream course of study.

As much as I hate UNC… I hope they have more then this if they want any type of punnishment. I didn’t really see anything wrong with what was in the emails.

Grad inflation? Sat through classes at UK with athletes sleeping in class with headphones on, professors leaving room while finals were taken and the exams were already in hand. Granted that was over 20 years ago, I’m sure they don’t do that anymore. It happens everywhere. Don’t get too excited when someone else gets called out, it may happen here.

Bigger question is who paid/rented the 2013 GMC Yukon for PJ Hairston? Besides the guns and drugs, this is a clear red flag. You have to be 25 years old to rent a vehicle. Plus, the vehicle was rented for $125-250 per day. Why would anyone pay that much for a rented luxury vehicle? Certainly not a reasonable family member. Booster, much? UNC still mum on the entire situation. Waiting for Durham PD forensics to test for fingerprints.

18 I know it’s a common class to have. I’m just saying that a lot of professors use this type of class to drive a wedge in the students. If you watched professor Gates from the so called beer summit, it was clear he was a raciest. All I’m saying in this day in age we need to bring all people together instead of working to drive a wedge between groups! To me people like Gates have a personal agenda and spread hate!!

If anybody can look at old tapes (Matt Jones), go back to the Jerry Stackhouse, R Wallace and bunch to see this AA studies had been going on in the 90’s. When they shoot free throws it shows their studies.

This SHOULD be the smoking gun that gets the NCAA involved.Whether or not it does remains to be seen.UNC sure seems to be one of those schools favored by the NCAA and many National Media outlets. If they went down hard then the NCAA would have crdibility again.Right now they have next to none.

There are 4 ongoing investigations at UNC:

SBI: embezzlement of UNC funds, tax ramifications
FBI/DOE: Sexual assault coverup (UNC athletes involved?)
    SACS: Accreditation of UNC.
Durham Police Dept: PJ Hairston drug/weapon charges
