If there’s any team that’s learned how rough it can be to play on the road, it’s Kentucky, who has now dropped four games in conference away from Rupp. Obviously, they’re looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd tonight. Tennessee? Well, they don’t seem to be exactly intimidated by a crowd that is often criticized for being a little too laid back. Vols center Brian Williams, who has somehow made it to his senior year without being nicknamed “Pig”, acknowledged in an interview that Rupp was unique, but wasn’t sure why he had never won a game there. Why? Well, he can explain:
“Kentucky isn’t that loud; I’ve played in louder places,” Williams said. “I can’t explain what it is about Rupp, but it’s something. I guess it’s the old ghosts in there messing with you.”
Yes. He’s on to the ghosts. That aside, Williams isn’t saying anything new or something that should be surprising to you. Rupp can often be too quiet. Don’t make tonight one of those nights. The Cats are in crisis and the Vols are on an emotional high with the return of Bruce Pearl. If there was ever a reason for you to be rowdy and be ready to scream, it’s tonight. So, bring an extra bottle of Osteo Bi-Flex so the blue hair closest to you can rise without joint pain. Be ready to lift your neighbor’s oxygen tank. Just be ready. Tonight is not for the faint of heart or the mild-mannered fan. Tonight is about doing your part in getting this team to turn the corner and making sure Brian Williams doesn’t graduate with a win at Rupp and questions about the Rupp Arena crowd. It’s your time to shine tonight. Make it happen.
