Matt, your way off on this. If you pay football players, you have to pay everyone that plays any other sports right? Wouldn’t that be the fair thing to do? After all, you’re a liberal right (spread the wealth)? And not only would you have to pay all sports, you’d have to pay all divisions. Not all programs make money as well. The athletes are very well taken care of. Their schollys are paid for, they have free meals, and enjoy prvilages that other students don’t. Just admit, this won’t work and you’re wrong! See…..feels better right?

what about the smaller school they cant afford it? and i agree with ryan you can police it better with giving them no money then giving them money how do you know a player getting more money then that? and most normal people dont get there scholarship paid for so they should be glad they get there paid for and who care if they sell there ring its theres

paying the athletes should be ok. (so should students who win large research grants). it should be regulated and every ncaa athlete regardless of sport or school should receive the same amount to avoid creating an unfair advantage.

a small part of that money should be made available to the players immediately similar to a grant. a larger part of that money should be put into a fund that the athlete becomes more invested in the longer they are in school – 1 year=25%,2 year=50%, 3 year =75%, 4 year 100%. if an athlete leaves early the remainder of the fund gets transferred to a non-athletic needs scholarship fund.

  20. Al's IndiCats
    10:41 am June 2, 2011 Permalink

Just like today, every coach in the country can pay their players, I really don’t see how they could regulate unless the NCAA takes controll……um never mind that was a bad idea……

Matt, What don’t you get about the owners making the money? The athletes get paid plenty, way more than they would in the public sector. Why would you want to own a sports franchise or any business (KSR) if you weren’t going to make money doing it? Break even kinda sucks.

Do people realize that basketball players (and I would think football) get meal money after home games, even though they have meal plans? They get per diem when they go on the road, even though the team feeds them? When they are not required to live on campus, they get a housing check. They then get a place usually cheaper than their check and have money left over. A lot of the athletes also get Pell Grants, which are just extra money. They are not getting rich, but they are not as bad off as some think.

Jim Master and I believe Sam Bowie were given a free meal at Cliff Hagan’s Steakhouse, and coach Hall made them go back and pay for it, because it was concidered an “extra” according to the NCAA back then.

  31. KentuckyGentleman
    10:54 am June 2, 2011 Permalink

First, anyone who thinks that paying players will get rid of corruption, they are naive. Second, what about the money that universities make going back to the university instead of the athletes, the AD, or the coaches. Each year regular students get screwed by tuition going up anywhere from 5-10% and state government continues cutting higher ed funding every year. I also hate the argument about “regular” students can go out and get jobs, yeah, they have to in order to cover tuition, books, room and board, items that athletes don’t have to worry about because those are already covered by the university. Athletes are already getting paid by the university, just not in cash.

I don’t see how you can pay some student athletes and not all. If you give football and basketball players money for games played and not pay others, in today’s litigious society, there will be a lawsuit filed by a student athlete in some sport at some obscure University claiming if they pay some they need to pay all on the basis of fairness. They’ll claim that they are student athletes too, and although they don’t make money for the University, they have the same wants and desires of those that do, i.e. spending money for expenses, etc. I don’t see how you can get around paying some and not all.

The Pell Grant is based on “whole family financial picture” if you are a dependent. (Based on “student’s only” financial picture if you are independent of your parents).

And the Pell Grant is a “Part” of your whole financial package which can include, Grants, Loans, Scholarships and Work Study. But it cannot exceed the total “Cost of Attendance” – to attend that particular school. “Cost of Attendance” includes housing, living expenses, and whatever you would normally spend money on while at school – movies, eating out, sundries, and 2 trips home per year.

Don’t know any specifics about additional monies available as part of being a football or basketball player, etc.

With all of this talk about rewarding those “workers” that contribute to a program, I think that KSR should take the lead and show how it should be done. Perhaps KSR could develop a contest where they select two winning comments each day from those that contribute to the show thread. And then at the end of the week, KSR could have a drawing and reward the selected weekly winner with a $200 prize from one of KSR’s valued advertisers. Fan Outfitters might be a good one to consider.

To argue against Matt’s point, a smaller division school will field a team and get paid to take a beating. The students technically did earn the school money by the Div I school paying the smaller school for the beating thus the student took one for the team.
