Today, the Oklahoma City Thunder extended former Cat Nazr Mohammed’s contract for another year, saving the 13-year NBA veteran from becoming an unrestricted free agent on Friday (whoa, Nazr’s been in the league 13 years? I feel old.).
Since Nazr has been in the league over 10 years, he’s guaranteed a minimum contract of $1,399,507 (this past season, he brought in $6,883,800). In 24 games with the Thunder, seven as a starter, Mohammed averaged 6.9 points and 4.8 rebounds in 17.9 minutes. Nazr’s valuable veteran presence helped the young Thunder get to their first Western Conference Finals last season. Thunder GM Sam Presti agrees:
“We are pleased to be able to keep Nazr in the Thunder family. He is a valuable part of our organization both on and off the floor. His professionalism, experience, and on-court play have had a positive impact on our young and evolving roster.”
Not too shabby for the big man whom Rick Pitino used to make run after the bus to lose weight.
Don’t think that Nazr has forgotten his roots; in fact, he’s a pretty awesome UK ambassador on Twitter, being among the first former Cats to welcome Brandon, Enes, DeAndre, and Josh to the league. #BBN #lafamilia #UKinNBA #GoCats
He’s even tweeting John Calipari to find out when the next pickup game is (can I come?):
