Three reasons why the Big Ten is a better conference for Kentucky

While Joker Phillips was defending his job security at SEC Football’s media day I couldn’t help but think how different his life would be if the team’s schedule wasn’t so daunting every year. As Kentucky fans know, it’s very tough to play a schedule in the Southeastern conference — almost too tough. After Phillips’ interview ended, ESPN’s college football analysts made predictions for the season, and some didn’t have Kentucky winning a conference game at all. Being familiar with the beast that is SEC play they could be right, but as a fan it sucks to cope with that reality. Based on fan base and sports teams Kentucky would be better served in an entirely different conference and the most natural one would be the Big Ten.

1. Football is easier there. Remember when the Big Ten was actually dominant in football? Yeah, well, those days are long gone and Kentucky would have a much better chance to be competitive in the league today. Being the punching bag of the SEC gets a little tiring and, realistically, the Wildcats will probably never have legitimate aspirations of being SEC BCS National Champions. Plus, the conference is still respectable with the likes of Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa. A successful year in the Big Ten could mean a Rose Bowl berth, and I don’t know about you but I’d rather go to Pasadena to lose than Nashville.

2. The basketball Tradition is richer. If you remove Kentucky from the SEC, the conference’s historical merit goes out the window. Jumping to the Big Ten, Kentucky has two, maybe three matchups a year with Indiana, Michigan State and Ohio State. Doesn’t that sound a lot better than Vanderbilt, Florida, and who cares? When it comes to conference basketball history it feels like Kentucky was the kid at the hospital that got taken home by the wrong parents. As far as basketball goes, UK was supposed to be Big Ten.

3. Geography.  Going North instead of South wouldn’t be a big change, in fact, some Big Ten schools are closer. Although it’s a lot colder in Big Ten country their campuses and stadiums have a historical feel that would make traveling a lot of fun.

Agree or disagree?

When we’re discussing running away to another conference because our football team is so bad, I think that’s a pretty good reason to consider, I dunno, HIRING A COMPETENT FOOTBALL COACH?

If we could be Big 10 in football but SEC in basketball, MAYBE it would be a good idea. We’d be more competitive in football, yes, but can you imagine how exciting 2 games a year against Northwestern, Penn St. and Wisconsin would be? Snore…

This is a great idea from every perspective except for money. UK will never leave the SEC because the endorsement deals for football are far too sweet. That and the whole founding member of one of the oldest conferences still in existence, a little nostalgia never hurt anyone did it?

Stop this stupidity; we would be totally screwing ourselves to leave the SEC because the SEC has the second biggest TV contract in college. We get paid even if we lose. Our TV contract is what funds our athletic department. If people honestly think we should leave the SEC so we can win in football, then you should either 1. go enroll in UK business school & hope you learn something or 2. just go play in traffic because you are beyond help.

UK football will suck in any conference we play in. Fact. At least now, we get kids from South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida that want to play SEC football but aren’t good enough for the top 10 SEC schools. That group of kids will dry up and start going to Miss, Miss St, and Vandy. UK would have to start getting kids from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Illinois and pulling them outta the grip of Ohio St, Penn St, Wis, Neb – which ain’t happening!

Face it, with Joker, we would have trouble in the BigEast.

ACC makes the most sense, much easier in football, and we get to play Duke and Carolina every year, but it will never happen because of money. UK football wouldn’t be dominate by any means, but would have a shot playing the likes of Wake Forest, Maryland, Duke, Boston College, North Carolina and NC State. I would have no interest in leaving the SEC for the Big Ten though.

NO. Silly post. Beyond stupid to leave the all-around best conference in the nation.

Kentucky is a founding member of the SEC. It may be easier in football if we left, but I would rather compete amongst the best. And with geography, all of KY is SOUTH of the Mason-Dixon line. I couldn’t imagine being in the same conference with the super irritating IU and OSU fans. The Big 10 is a sinking ship.

First, the Big 10 would never admit UK to their league because of academics. Second, UK will never leave the honey/money pot created by SEC football. Third, the SEC needs a whipping boy warmup game which UK has provided for many years. Until UK makes a commitment like Vandy seem to be doing they will continue to be the whipping boys for the rest of the SEC.

We wouldn’t do much better in the Big Ten, Nebraska, Michigan, Mich. St, Wisconsin, Ohio St, and Iowa would clean our clock every year. I don’t really think we could compete with Purdue, Northwestern, Minnesota, Penn St, or Illinois either. That leaves Indiana, which would be a toss up depending where the game was played. We may do well in the MAC, OVC or Big East. I don’t see many wins coming over Mizzou or A&M.

Why even begin this conversation? UK would NEVER be invited to the Big 10 because of academics. They have a HIGH standard for their schools academically (whether it is fair or not) that most other conferences don’t. We make a TON of money just for being in the SEC so let’s just shut up about the “Let’s move conferences” debate because it isn’t happening. Plus it would look terrible on us for leaving the most profitable conference in America just because we cannot compete in football.

  40. Disagree
    8:38 pm July 18, 2012 Permalink

I’m sick and tired of people constantly trying to move UK out of the SEC (of which we are a founding member). To begin with, it changes every other week which conference is suggested for the move. This post is about the Big Ten. If we scroll down then there are multiple KSR posts suggesting the ACC is where we belong. I’m sure there’s one that says the Big East would be peachy for us. The bottom line is UK is an SEC school. UK will always be an SEC school. And, UK should always be an SEC school.

On top of everything else, I’m pretty sure UK would lose revenue by moving out of the SEC deals and into the Big Ten.

Besides, their divisions are “Legends” and “Leaders.” I’m embarrassed just typing that.

Why isn’t anyone focusing on the positive side of moving to the Big ten? We would get a much more challenging basketball schedule than in the SEC that would prepare us better for march. I’m not saying I’m for a move to the big ten I am just saying actually consider the idea before you say it is terrible.

  45. One More Thing
    8:43 pm July 18, 2012 Permalink

You’re basketball argument doesn’t even hold up to scrutiny. Since 1990, a Big Ten school as only won the Championship once (MSU, 2000). The SEC has won 6 championships in that time with 3 different schools (Arkansas, 1994; Florida, 2006/2007; and, Kentucky 1996/1998/2012).

SEC football is dominantly better. SEC basketball is also better.

I appreciate your thoughts but it’s never going to happen so it would probably be best to give it up.

UK has been in the SEC for so long that they are one of the lynchpins to it. They aren’t going anywhere.

Besides UK could be playing in the Big Sky Conference for football and would still be mediocre at best because the facilities aren’t there and neither is the coaching staff.

You think UK would have a chance to recruit with the stadiums and facilities at Ohio State, Michigan, Minnesota (brand new stadium), Penn State, Wisconsin and so on? They’d be in just as bad a position as trying to compete with Florida, Alabama, LSU, Georgia in football.

Uk is not a football school…they weren’t in the past, they aren’t today and they won’t be in the future. That’s reality…time for everyone to accept this fact.

If we are going to be silly, why not the ACC? UK Football would be middle of the pack, if they hire a better FB coach, and get to play Duke, UNC, Syracuse, and NC State every year in BB.

Never mind the $$$ UK would miss out on…

UK is a charter member of the SEC. They are not going anywhere…Get better in FB or be a punching bag for the rest of the conference. Empty seats at CWS will bring about change. The question is does Mitch have the stones to hire a real FB coach.

Basketball – I love absolutely being the undisputed champion in our conference year in and year out while playing national powers like Louisville, North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, ect. each year

Football- Moments like beating Bama in 98, eventual national champion in LSU, and Tennessee last year, outweigh beating an average big 10 team any day. I also enjoy watching an eventual National Champ year in and year out

No way. Forget the Big 10. I say we petition freakin Frankfort to pull their thumbs out of their rear-ends to do what they have to do to help UK get financing to build better facilities so UK could finally compete for better recruits thus improving the program. I know, people are gonna say better head coach, blah, blah and others will say build better educational facilities. I don’t disagree with that second part. Build one educational facility for one football facility. I know, it’s complicated, but, evidently, so is the reason why UK can’t get funding for football facilities. – OR – UK fans could adopt T. Boone Pickens or Phil Knight as an honorary member of Big Blue Nation and let him pay for everything.

First off everyone stop bashing this guy. He’s new and there’s not slot to write about right now. I myself would actually like to win some football games as a die hard UK fan of all sports. Theres nothing I hate more than every Saturday hoping we can keep the game within 3 tds . The truth is our coach is not great but we honestly won’t hire a Steve spurrier type like south Carolina did. We have nothing to offer. No facilities, no support, and absolutely no in state SEC talent. This move would not be as bad as most think but I believe it should be the ACC if anything. However, this move will not happen simply for the money aspect. We make too much money getting our asses handed to us every Saturday in football and we are the only reason the SEC is relevant in basketball. But would it not be nice to have a winning record in football season and still be the best basketball program as well? If you guys really wanna know how you get recruits it starts with winning games. No average or good players will go to a school that is a below 500 team every year. So before you go bashing these writers think about the points he makes and validity of this post. Most of you people are idiots and jump to conclusions I agree with mostly everything this guy said. Granted our coaching staff is not the greatest but were not gonna get anyone else worth a damn anyways. We actually need a new offensive scheme and Willie Cauley-Stein wouldn’t hurt.

Great points first off! but being a founding member of the SEC is huge. and can we all remember that its the middle of the summer and there is nothing to talk about, KSR is trying to fill space when there is nothing to write about, cant be mad at that… and if you cant get behind the coach then don’say you bleed blue, no matter the outcome, you support your coach until Mitch sees fit to go in a different direction…. simple as that.

I don’t go North much but all, Northerners and Southerners tell me that I have no business up there. I say whats wrong with me going to a game, in the South… no problem. I think you may need to adjust yourself… we/I are what we are. What are you?

geography: you stated, “Going North instead of South wouldn’t be a big change”, just how stupid are you… are you one of those girly boys… its one thing to be one and another to blast it out, there is a big difference between North and South, no need to explain, you most likely wont understand… North and South is about the difference between a poker and a pokie.

Football would be the only advantage but don’t act like O State, Wisconsin, Michigan would just become our new LSU, ‘Bama, and Florida. The games would be equally embarrassing. Maybe we would fit in better with their marginal teams (less South Carolina s and Georgia s) I would really miss kicking UT’s ass in hoops. Interesting article, thanks.

I don’t know the details of how the money would square up, and that is the deciding factor for the University. However, money aside, I say yes – please, do it today. Both the football and the basketball would be better for us. There are tons of Kentucky transplants in Big Ten country. I’ve always felt it would be a good and more natural fit.

The vitriol here is ridiculous. He’s raising an interesting debate — one that’s been going on for years — during an extremely slow UK sports news cycle. Of course we’re going to stay in the SEC. I’m sure he knows that. It’s just something to talk about. The anger in the responses is ridiculous. My favorite: “Rashawn, your [sic] a moron.”

This comes up on some board at least 3 to 4 times a year and the answer has been and always will be “Hell no!” from fans, but it’s actually a more emphatic no than that.

It’s more of a, “If anyone ever tried to pull this stunt, I’m driving to Lexington with a trailer for of horse maneur and dumping it on the front steps of the UK President’s house…and all my friends and family, and I are going to form a human chain around Rupp until this nonsense stops.”
