Three characteristics UK’s next football coach HAS to have

It’s over. Well… maybe it’s not over, but the fat lady is warming up her vocals on Coach Phillips’ career at UK. I don’t want to upset Chester, the passionate UK football fan who called into the show today, even further, but the reality of the situation looks bleak. Yes, Kentucky still has a chance to make a bowl game, and maybe it happens. Right now, though, with the rest of the SEC schedule looming, the odds are stacked against the Cats. At this moment, it’s hard to outline exactly who will be up for the job or would even be a good fit. It’s not hard to determine exactly what characteristics our new coach has to possess to be successful.

Florida, Georgia, and Alabama ties. For the past couple of years, Coach Phillips has made a concerted effort to recruit in these states. The result? A ton of playmakers that are going to help this program for years to come. I don’t know what they are putting in the water in these places, but these guys just play football at a higher level.

QB Development. Usually when a team changes coaches they go to a different specialty than the previous coach had (defense to offense, or vice versa). This should not be the case if Kentucky gets a new coach. The Wildcats have to maximize the talent they have at the quarterback position to be successful, therefore, an offensive coach needs to be hired. QB Maxwell Smith is going to be a star at some point in his career, if he’s not already. As a true sophomore, this kid has shown tremendous ability that makes you wonder what type of numbers he can put up in his career at Kentucky. For two more years, a new coach will have to get as much out of Smith’s development as possible if the Cats are going to compete in the SEC. Right after Smith’s career is over, a new coach will have two guys in Patrick Towles and Jalen Whitlow competing for Smith’s spot. Both these guys have a ton of ability, setting up a great future under center for the blue and white.

4-3 Defense. Even though Kentucky’s defense played better against the Gators, a 3-4 defense just isn’t working for this program. DC Rick Minter did an excellent job in 2011, the first year of the switch, but he had a host of talent that he might not be privileged to have every year. A 4-3 defense is a lot more simple, and something Kentucky had a lot of success with in previous years. It seems like we were send more guys to the NFL in that defense as well.

So what say you? In your opinion, what characteristics does our next coach need to have, BBN?

I’m not sure where you get your three criteria, but those three aren’t even close to being the most important qualities, IMO. I think the most important characteristics associated with a new coach are:

    1) Ability to win with recruits that aren’t necessarily 4-5 star guys (e.g. Bob Petrino). UK will never out-talent its schedule, hence, this is the biggest factor.
    2) Ability to coach up talent and get them to play disciplined precise football. Petrino’s practices are legendary for their speed and precision and attention to detail. This is sorely lacking now.
    3) CHarisma / Excitement: Absent a big name, the new coach should have a big personality. Mumme was a good hire in the sense that he energized the fanbase and played an exciting brand of football. The new guy needs to have some energy and should make every effort to leverage the strengths of UK (why not try and tag-team with Calapari and market UK as the premiere dual sport program in the country?

I think recruiting ties are important, but I’m not sold on the idea that our recruits have to come from FL / GA / AL. I think Ohio and Pennsylvania could be just as important to UK. We are the northernmost SEC school, why not leverage that? With PSU’s decline, some other schools need to fill in the vaccuum (WVU is one school who has successfully poached recruits from PA).

One of the top 5 talent producing states is directly north of us and it has only 1 BCS program, thats the ties you need. We are behind 20 other schools for Florida kids, and contrary to popular belief there is not an endless supply of talent in Alabama. Saban typically only signs 25-30% AL kids anymore.

Cincinnati-Dayton is the area we need to focus on, probably a top 5 talent area after you eliminate the big 3 states of FL, CA, and TX and we inexcusably have zero presence in it. KY-OH-GA is where most of our prospects need to come from.

9 and 10…get a life, Joker has destroyed this program and deserves no respect. This post is absolutely pertinent to the conversation.

The firt paragraph is ridiculous…”Yes, Kentucky still has a chance to make a bowl game, and maybe it happens.” REALLY? C’mon man, you got the guts to do a post like this, man up and write reality…we did not have a chance since Joker was not fired at the end of last season, that is when our chance ended.

We need a coach that can motivate players and get them to play at or above their potential…one of those guys that can get players to want to run through walls for them. That is why Joker has failed. We have the talent to compete with most teams…if they did what I just said…played their hearts out and overachieved. No, we could not compete for the SEC title or anything, but bowl game…absolutely.

    Joker just cannot coach, period.

The UK coaching dilemma has been around as long as I have been alive. We always seem to get a middle of the road guy who has become excellent at being mediocre at his previous stops. If the powers that be bring in names like Tubberville,Nutt and Fulmer please just let Joker keep the job. I would like to see Joker get a chance with the facility upgrade that may be in the works but it may be too late for that now.The one thing I know is Joker loves UK and wants to be successful. If a new coach is hired PLEASE don’t follow the UK tradition of hiring a has been or worse a never was.Do something to excite the fans like looking at the following:

1 oregon OC-would let you run a different offense that is only seen when you play UK which I think is key to being successful.
2 hire Atlanta Falcon OC-Matt Ryan has become elite in this system (Patrick Towles should smile at this) This is also a pro style offense with someone from the pros -which should help skill position recruiting.
3 Go totally to the other side and get one of the Ryan boys to shore up the defense-would really have to monitor OC choice in this option.
4 Norv Turner -when he gets fired this year.Norv has a GREAT offensive mind-would have to monitor the DC choice in this selection.
5 Finally if you hire that jerk Petrino I don’t want to hear the complaints when in week 10 we are preparing for Vandy and he accepts a job that seems better elsewhere.

As a side note please go out and support the kids playing football at UK.If you don’t like Joker or the direction of the program e-mail Mitch, but show up and support these kids who have poured their hearts and souls into this team . Thanks and a special shout out to Chester who inspired this response.

I would love to see Patrino here. For no other reason then to make the Card fans cry. I agree that we have to keep recruiting Ga ,FLA. and Bama. Ohio would be nice, but we must win the Recruiting battle in Louisville . That is where Brooks built the program and Strong is kicking Jokers ass there.

These NFL guy’s you talk of will come to UK? You act like all we have to do is call and they will come. The Ryan’s are NOT going to leave the NFL to come coach in collage especially not UK. Norv Turner is a horrible pro head coach so you think he would be better at collage with the recruiting and building a NCAA team. We need a collage guy who understands how to build a program and has relationships with high school coaches.
If you want to support the players stay away from the games and changes will be made. Then they will get a compantant coach. That will support the players more then anything.
Please use some of mommy and daddy’s money on a reality class because life is going to take a huge bite out of your ass.

This post is in bad taste! This is a college team , the players are students and the current Coach is a native Kentuckian. I am 50, the football program is what it has always been. The blood thirsty and rude behavior surrounding the program is very unbecoming. The UK football program is an extra curricular activity of the university. It is profitable and not a burden to the university, state or local community. The football program is handcuffed by state government ( funding, facilities, ect…..) THIS IS NOT A PROFFESSIONAL SPORTS TEAM!!! The players are STUDENT athletes. They deserve everyone’s support and respect. The head coach is a native Kentuckian, an UK alumni and UK football letterman! BBN, the press and faculty 4 years ago thought enough of Joker to make him the coach in waiting because EVERYONE DID NOT want to lose him. Unfortunately all the complainers don’t recall the last search for the head football coaching position. There were NO takers!!!!!! Barnhart had to bring Brooks out of retirement! Don’t in any way think these players are “regular” students. They do deserve better and the next coach will try give them the respect they deserve. #55 since you are so quick to point out the head coach is a alumni then maybe he should give a couple million back to the school.
One poster said it best after the WKU game. I don’t stay up at night thinking about beating LSU and Bama, but I sure sleep knowing UK can beat WKU.
I will admitt I said we should have hired Joker he earned that.I also thought we should give him this year 2 years just wasn’t enough time. But Joker has failed and people blindly supporting Joker and acting like everything it just roses makes me sick. Barnhart has given Joker plenty of time and support as he should have. Now Joker should repay Barnhart loyalty and announce his resignation at the end of the year.

If not, then Kirby Smart, or heck, go pull Holgerson from WVU, Gundy from OSU, or someone in these other conferences.

    1. Bobby Petrino
    2. Mike Leach
    3. Kirby Smart
    4. John Chavis
    5. Lorenzo Ward
    6. Gus Malzahn
    7. Tommy Tuberville
    8. Skip Holtz
    9. Jim Tressel
    10. Mark Helfrich
My top choice personally would probably be Lorenzo Ward due to his experience playing and coaching at alabama, coaching virginia tech, coaching in the NFL, coaching under Petrino, and the enormous success he has had building South Carolina into a defensive juggernaut that rivals LSU and Alabama!

Most of in the BBN are racist I agree, but not in skin color just in w’s and l’s. 69 and 14 are trolls just tring to stir the pot. I can promise any animosity I have toward Joker is strictly due to wins and losses, and is strictly football related. Just because I think he should be fired doesn’t mean I would have a beer with the gut. Hell he seems like he would be cool as hell to hang out with.

#63 I read your post. UK is about right in the middle of the SEC in money spent on the program. About right were most of us think they should be in on the field proformance. In case you haven’t noticed our whole country is in bad financial standing. The U of K is no different the UKAA has to pay for all sporting teams and due to title 9 that is pretty specific as to how much can be spent and were to spend it.
Upgrades have been made to commonwealth and to the Nutter facility. So yes I do think the support is there. WE are not Bama by no means but we do spend more them ole Miss, Miss. State,Vandy, and we damn sure have more then WKU. The resources are there to have a good program. Agian not like Bama, LSU, and Flordia but no one expects Joker to beat these teams. We should be in the middle of the SEC. Then a greater commitment should be made.

If i had to choose though, my vote would go to Kirby Smart. Matt, can we get this in a poll on the site? im curious to see who BBN favors with Joker being an option as well for the fans that still support him.

How great is the SEC Bama football, UK basketball, UT women,UK cheerleaders. They all are the top programs of all-time in there respective sports. I don’t follow Baseball but we probably have one of the top teams in that sport too. Why would UK even think of leaving the SEC for any other conference. At best I think we can be middle of the pack in football. To me that is better then being the best in a second tier conference like UL in the Big Least.

Joker has shown that he is not capable of running an SEC caliber program. Players are not being developed. Game plans appear to be non-existent. Even playing cupcakes early in the year this program has failed to score an offensive first quarter touchdown since 2010. That is staggering. The program has gone into a tail spin. The next coach needs to be able to develop talent because UK won’t be able to recruit the best. He needs to be able to develop unique plans for each game. He needs to be able to attract coordinators and assistants who know what they are doing. After seeing the game time decisions during the Florida game, it’s easy to see why Joker has got to go.

Not your best Rashawn, poor taste by KSR leading the charge for a new coach 4 games into the season. On your football knowledge, we’ve really been running a 4-3 or a 5-2 defensive set for most of the year that they are calling a 3-4 so I’m not sure what you are watching out there. Truthfully it looked really good in the first half against FL which is a sign that the freshmen are coming along well. The 3-4 we have been running is 3 DTs and one DE (Wyndham) and really is the 4-3 with more blitz packages and an extra linebacker over the middle, mostly playing zone but occasionally blitzing. 4-3 defense doesn’t work well in the SEC because of it’s inability to disguise packages, we tried for 20 years straight, it is too easy to pick apart. Seriously, it’s tougher to go against a good 3-4 than a good 4-3 because it’s impossible to determine if 3,4,5,or 6 guys are coming after your QB and you can never figure out which guys are zoning or manning out in coverage when you run it correctly. The other problem with the 4-3 is that we have never been able to recruit DTs, we don’t produce very many in Kentucky and most of the good ones stay close to home. We may have trouble getting fast enough linebackers some years in the 3-4 but we have a greater chance to succeed and don’t need to recruit as many DT. FL has a mobile QB and one of the best HB’s in the country and we stopped both in the first half pretty effectively, UK NEVER stops mobile QB’s, it’s been our Achilles for as long as I can remember. Also, the recruiting success in Southern GA, Birmingham, and New Orleans probably won’t translate to a new coach unless he already has ties there. Those are very tough areas to get your foot in the door and better coaches than Joker haven’t been able to. Joker was the first guy to get into those areas for UK ever and it took him nearly a decade to break through into Birmingham and NO. I’m just saying those areas tend to be loyal to people, not programs, that’s the nature of football recruiting in the south, you need to know the high schools that are good and the coach at that school needs to like you. I know you gave up on this team after the western game judging from your posts but I’m not ready to throw in the towel just yet, even if it’s just me and Chester at the game. Joker’s made plenty of mistakes but lets not act like he hasn’t made some major breakthroughs on areas like recruiting that we are just now getting to see in our freshmen and sophomore classes, give credit where credit is due. There’s a lot of good players on this team and a lot of football left to play. We’ll find out in the next 2-3 weeks whether this team has given up on their coach or whether they will rally around him and put all of the pieces together. I’m hoping for the latter. Stay positive Cat fans, there is plenty of time in the off season to bash Joker and talk coaching search if he does in fact go 0-8 in the SEC. BTW, I’ve actually read several people claiming to be UK fans admit they were hoping for that and I think if you are routing for us to fail then you should burn your UK stuff, don some dirty bird gear, head down to that gloomy pizza palace parking lot off I65 and call it a day. Sorry, guess this post really hit a nerve but I’m tired of this crap, save this kind of talk for November or December at least, it certainly won’t help and could in fact hurt us. Go Cats, good luck Joker on the rest of the season, let’s beat SC Saturday.

The 5 line backers you talk about really plays closer to a run stoping safety then your classic linebacker I don’t think guy was no were big enough to play outside linebacker. Well he’ll #81 you have convinced me. Our D is great and so is this 2- 10 team we should extend Joker and give Minter a raise. Hell knowi see why we fired our assistants . Hell I even see why joker ran Moss offf with out even opening up the job for compition you know because Newton was so great. Even though the kid never got a chance to show what he could due when healthy. Your right we should give Joker more time he sure gave moss plenty of time to show what he could do. 3-4 defense never worked under Mike Archer. Why did we think it would work with Minter? And besides its not just the format. We hardly ever blitz or give pressure to a QB so they have all day to throw on us. I’ve never been a big fan of 3-4 defense. It’s an advantage for the offense line too much.

Florida is playing 14 freshmen regularly, many on defense, in Muschamps second year after Meyer left the cupboard bare. And wasn’t Jokers now senior class ranked #37 or #42 or something, and we just talk about our “young” talent? All we get is excuses, no results. On and on and on.

All these people saying joker can turn it around know absolutely nothing bout the game! It doesn’t matter if u gave joker bama’s team he still wouldn’t make a bcs bowl!! I would love to see the man succeed but it ain’t happening! The situational play calling is the worst I’ve ever seen from a staff! I k ow he likes to throw these short west coast style passes but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that if it is 4th & 3, you better throw the ball at least 3 freaking yards!!! We never throw the ball to the marker! It’s always well short! Our gameplan isn’t to win, it’s to play a way to keep from getting waxed and he can’t even pull that off! Perfect example of joker still not being able to win with talent was his first season. Hartline was a top qb in the league that yr by numbers. We had Cobb, Matthews, and Locke at the skill positions! Joker took that team to a 6-7 record and got embarrassed by Pitt in the bowl game! That team shoulda been 8-4 at the very least, really 9-3 should’ve happened! He also went 2-6 in the league that yr! We beat sc, took the undefeated champs to the wire but got completely out coached against the bottom feeders that yr(tenn, miss, miss st)!! I’m sure he is a great guy and is a pretty descent coordinater but a head coach he is not even close to being competent!!

Not sure exactly what this post is. Of the three criteria that Drew determines, the current staff clearly fills the bill with the first two. As for the third: I respectively submit that it is flat wrong. The reason you see so much 3-4 in college football nowadays is that it’s a lot easier to find hybrid LB/ defensive end types than good down linemen. It always has been but the concept hadn’t been thought of. Rick Minter, by the way, would go to a 4-3 in a minute if he had the personnel to play it. Novel approach: support the team, players and coaches, and knock off the know-it-all nonsense.

Why is it okay to rejoice when Gillispie got fired after only two years, but so many of you support a coach who is personally setting UK football back to the Curry era? An. This is really more than Joker’s third season, even, since he recruited all those players beforehand as the HCIW. Why would anyone accept that UK football will never be anything? If anyone told you UK basketball was done forever because we made a bad hire, would you believe that? No. Obviously not. So why do so many of you care so much about basketball, but not about football? A better question is why do so many people still attend these games? Vote with your wallets, people, and show Mitch you expect him to at least give the appearance of trying to build a program. There’s no reason UK cannot be at least as good as the Brooks era consistently. Mitch is a businessman: he ponied up the cash for Cal because he knew the people demanded a winner. Right now, he can get away with hiring the cheapest help possible for football because he knows up until this year 70000 idiots would still buy tickets to come drink cheap beer in the parking lot and watch a game that’s usually over by halftime. If we all vote with our wallets, we send a message that we expect you to treat the football team with respect an SEC program deserves, not as your cash cow to pump up basketball.

While this discussion is a little bit premature as well as probably inappropriate at this point(and I do support Joker and hope that he can somehow manage to turn this situation around) I still find it highly unlikely. Maybe a differnt title would’ve been more appropriate…a what if or a hypothetical in it perhaps. Still with that said I don’t think we need Petrino. Or his baggage.

My thoughts are that if UK does in fact hire a new coach then they probably should look to the NFL to hire someone suitable. Seems as though they’re just on a different level with respects to playing and coaching.

It’s been said here already that UK doesn’t have the name or the facilities in football to draw the names other schools can…still money talks. And with that plus a committment from the University to improve facilities I think there would be plenty of interested coaches.

There is two ways to handle your next coaching candidate. 1) You can go the coach in waiting route like we did with Joker and FSU with Jimbe Fisher or 2) you can help them get a lessor job and let them get a little on the job training. I think we have found out that the HCIW deal puts to much pressure on everyone. In Bowden and Brooks last years it seemed as they were being pushed out.
When C.M. Newton decided Tubby would follow Ricky 2stacks he helped him get hired at. Tulsa and Georgia. That let him get his feet wet being “Thee Guy” so when he did come to UK he was prepared . I wasn’t much of a Tubby fan, but he was ready for the job when he got here. I think Joker should have had more success had he coached at say a school like EKU for 3or 4 years. Then Joker would have known recruiting is the life blood of a program, but you have to have people who can coach up the players when you get them. Joker fired Brooks guy who could coach up the talent they had, and replaced them with people who were recruiters but were not the best coaches. That has been Jokers down fall.
