Rick Minter is about to go eat lunch

It’s not easy to find something good to say about Kentucky football these days. That goes for everyone, including the coaching staff. Maybe that’s why Kyle Tucker of the Courier-Journal asked defensive coordinator Rick Minter if there is anything he feels really good about.

Well, I’m about to go eat lunch,” Minter said jokingly.

After a quick laugh from reporters, Minter went on to say he’s happy with the progression of the young guys, especially the three true freshmen in the secondary.

“No, the kids are great and they are trying extremely hard, they really are,” Minter said. “They are giving us all they got. Our guys up front are playing solid football, our linebackers are getting better each and every week and our young corners that are getting to play, those are great opportunities for them and they are stepping up. We really, knock on wood, have not been hurt very often at the cornerback position, which was our biggest fear in August once we lost some kids (and wondered) who was going to step up. Well, opportunity came, they stepped up and Cody Quinn seized that moment, (J.D.) Harmon and (Fred) Tiller seized those moments and Cartier (Rice) is playing like a senior. The linebackers are beginning to settle in a little bit better but now we have some growing pains at the safety position.”

Number 10 is correct. The only answer is to MOVE KENTUCKY OUT OF THE SEC. Maybe the Big East, or conference USA. Then we might win some games. If you want Kentucky to win in the SEC, two things have to happen. One, the weather needs to stay warm all the time… no more winter. Two, some wealthy billionaire needs to die and leave every dime to the football program so they can build a new stadium. So, like I said, the only answer is to MOVE THE TEAM OUT OF THE SEC.

#13 .. Add a 3rd ingredient to your fantasy recipe: Move about 1.5 million more people into KY that will organically produce about a dozen top 100 high school FB recruits each year, convince them to stay in-state and attend UK and there ya go!

    10 and 13,

The answer is simple: Hire a coach like Petrino and we could be as good as say, South Carolina. If Kentucky football was managed correctly, we would not only leave Louisville in the dust, we would compete in the SEC as well.

Any supposed UK fan that disagrees with me on this needs to move to the loser BIG LEAST!

hey #15… you know what turned me completely off of UK FB and made me emotionally divest? It wasn’t lack of success or on field ineptitude. Read the overwhelming majority of comments on here about UK FB. ITS THE FANS THAT TURNED ME OFF! People who don’t know FB, have no clue the hurdles UK faces, and then still delusionally expects UK to rise to the upper tier of the SEC. Its the stupid comments, the hatred of a UK alum who puts more effort into this program than any coach has. Its not that I can’t be a fan, its that I WON’T identify myself with the idiotic vocal few that have no clue. Not done with UK FB team, or staff, or school as much as I am DONE with the delusions of most of the fans. Sorry, but you can’t tell me who to root for, or when. 🙂 see ya in Rupp

#17 hey, go to the link below and tell me what you see. The So. Carolina roster is largely made up of homegrown talent. South Carolina/North Carolina kids. Kentucky does NOT produce JaDeveon Clowneys and Marcus Lattimores on an annual basis in numbers. we…just…don’t. Yes Spurrier, Saban, or Urban Meyer in UK blue on the sideline would add a couple victories and help us somewhat in recruiting. But the hurdles are still there and the HS talent still isn’t. BUT those coaches ain’t coming. Why would they? Why would Petrino??

I agree with #17, however a majority of fans care about football till Midnight madness, and then the football games are just tailgating, at least from reading the boards, that is what it seems like. I am one who likes both football and basketball, there have been so few times that the football team is good that it sucks. I am tired of being bottom dweller in the SEC, but it seems that is OK with some, especially our administration, and that is frustrating! Having said this, it will never make me want to cheer for another team, I will always cheer for UK!

#18 – you have a point in that expectations of a simple coaching change making UK FB a top tier team in the SEC are out of line. It will take more commitment than a simple coaching change – major investment needs to be made in infrastructure to demonstrate a long term commitment to football before UK has a prayer of attracting a top level coach. Just hiring a retread will perpetuate the cycle – they might turn it around and get a little bit more competitive for a little while, like Brooks did, but in order to truly turn the corner they need to commit to stadium renovation (or a new one) and much better facilities for the players. UK needs to commit to putting forth an image to recruits that they are truly serious about competing.

I am not so delusional to think that they will ever get to the level of Florida, LSU, Bama, etc., but I do not see where it is impossible to field a team that can at least get above .500 in the league on a consistent basis, and occasionally surprise the big boys with a win. We were close to turning this corner in 2007, then slacked off, especially when Brooks retired and Joker took over. Barnhart had the opportunity right then to take it to the next step, but he mailed it in by making his good buddy Joker the HCIW. No way they can keep Joker for 1 more year without extending his contract, and there would be crowds with pitchforks and tar & feathers after Barnhart if that happens.

Guys, we went from 2006 – 2009 we averaged 7.5 wins per season. I would be and was happy with that. Yes, we want to break through and have a 9 win or 10 win season, and you trade that with a 6 win season every now and then. We did this 3 years ago, it is not impossible!

Moving to another conference should NOT ever happen. We make too much money on the TV deal for starters. After that quote I think it is safe to assume that the coaching staff has “Lost” the players. I applaud Joker for his love of all things UK, but perhaps if he loves it so much, he should step aside. Only worry is the young talent they have may go elsewhere, leaving the new staff with an even more bare cupboard. This is a no win for anyone, players, fans and coaches.

The problem is that KY stinks at football and the bar was already set low. It’s the “bowl streak” morons who were gushing over a 4-0 non-conference record and a 2-6 SEC record after Joker’s first year who are the problem.

Anyone who wants us to leave the SEC is ridiculous. You think we don’t invest enought in football, we need to hire a big name coach, and we need to leave the SEC. Where the hell is the money going to come from for football if we leave the SEC? We’ll get less revenue from the league, TV deals, and tickets sales bc the SEC fans travel better than any other league. What we need is a commitment from the state for our football program and a coach that can excite the fanbase again. We’re not asking for an SEC championship. We only want to be able to believe that our team has a shot each week and that we have winning seasons on a regualr basis. 7-5 each year is a real possiblity and we’ve seen it once already. Maybe then we can challenge for the SEC East occassionally like we did in 2007.

Poor management. UK football is an poorly run and mismanaged company. What is exciting about a UK football game? Why is the media not allowed at practices? Why were there 25,000 people at this past weeks game? Why do students not come to games? Why did Joker dead end Towles? Why does UK never score in the first quarter? Why is UK footballs playing calling hard to watch? Why do UK quarterbacks know only 10% of the plays? Why is the only team UK has beat this year, the only team who had a worse offense than UK last season. Why is our longest pass play of the year 32 yards? Why does the defense get blown out every game? Why does UK not have many upperclassmen on the team? Why do no kids from Kentucky high schools want to play for UK? Why is Joker like a bump on a log during press conferences? Why is Randy Sanders never happy about anything and not look in the mirror to see what the real problem actually is? Why are there so many freshman on the field this year? Why does Mitch Barnhardt not pull the trigger and regroup beginning now? Why will season ticket sales be at an all time low next year? Why ask why?

I agree with Minter. The young guys in the secondary are stepping up and playing great for freshmen. Youth/inexperience and injuries/suspensions have really hurt the team this year. I don’t think any coach, even Petrino, could have a winning team the way this season has turned out. That said, the coaching staff should be held responsible for the few upper classmen that we have and putting the team in the situation that they are in, aside from injuries which cannot be forseen.

  42. chas

Once again, It’s all about hiring the right coach. Kentucky could recruit the right players if the right coach was in place.

South Carolina is a great example. Sure, South Carolina has a handful more home-grown prospects but they have to battle Clemson. Kentucky only has to battle Louisville.

The ONLY difference in succees between UL, South Carolina and Kentucky is the fact that UL and South Carolina have made MUCH BETTER HIRES!

If Kentucky football was maximized (which is what we fans want to finally see),we would literally leave UL in the dust and yes, we would compete in the sec just like South Carolina is doing right now.

#42 I posted a link earlier to this year’s South Carolina roster but it was removed. Don’t know why. Google it. Take a look at how many players on that roster are from Carolina. Then take a look at how many Clemson kids are from Carolina. Two highly ranked teams. What does that tell you? Tells me there is loads more talent in Carolina which of course gives USC and Clemson a major leg up on UK, regardless of the coach. you say South Carolina has “a handful more home grown prospects”. Please. Much more than a handful. Comparing UK to South Carolina and UofL…. South Carolina has the talent, UofL is in the Big East. Flip flop UK and UofL (yes, I know UofL is beating UK head to head) and UofL would suck in the SEC and UK would be competitive in the Big East. “Maximize UK football”??? What does that even mean?

We where competitive when we could pull players from Lousville. That is where brooks built this program from. Charlie has kicked jokers ass recruiting Jefferson county. Thier is talent in this state, just not enough for 2 d-1 schools we have to win the instate battles. To all these joker supporters I will but the SEC stuff . The rest of the schools might have a deeper pool of talent. How do explain WKU passing us up. That wasn’t a fluke they well could have beat us last year as well. 4 years ago UK was arguably in a better position than Miss. St., Vandy, UL, and definitely WKU, our benchmark and instate competition. All made new hires since then, and we have been surpassed by all of these. No way to defend this staff.
