UK added a new name to their 2011-12 roster late Thursday, but not in the usual sort of way. Incoming freshman Michael Gilchrist announced that he’s changed his name to Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. He’s chosen to add “Kidd” to his surname to honor his deceased uncle, Darrin Kidd, who passed away in November hours after he signed his National Letter of Intent with Kentucky. ESPN wrote a lengthy article about it at the time.
Kidd-Gilchrist’s father, Michael Gilchrist, Sr., passed away in 1996 and he said the new name will allow him to honor both men. Assuming the new name ends up on the jersey as he says, he will become the first hyphenated name in UK basketball history.
