There’s A New Name On UK’s 2011-12 Roster

UK added a new name to their 2011-12 roster late Thursday, but not in the usual sort of way.  Incoming freshman Michael Gilchrist announced that he’s changed his name to Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.  He’s chosen to add “Kidd” to his surname to honor his deceased uncle, Darrin Kidd, who passed away in November hours after he signed his National Letter of Intent with Kentucky.  ESPN wrote a lengthy article about it at the time

Kidd-Gilchrist’s father, Michael Gilchrist, Sr., passed away in 1996 and he said the new name will allow him to honor both men.  Assuming the new name ends up on the jersey as he says, he will become the first hyphenated name in UK basketball history.

Hmmmm. It doesn’t exactly flow. Nice of him to honor a man he obviously has a lot of love and respect for, though. Lots of syllables in that name.

This kid sure seems to have class and an old-school workman’s mentality — kind of like one of my favorite Cats, Patrick Patterson.

    What about Bernadette Locke-Mattox?

Are we sure we want this guy on our team? According to the media, Cal only recruits guys who are about themselves and looking to make money at the expense of everyone around them. This guy seems way too classy, intelligent and mature (according to the media) for Calipari.

I just hate the fact that we’re filling our roster with stellar players and young men like Kidd-Gilchrist. Shame.

    9. Don’t think she was married when she played. Would’ve been kind of presumptuous for her to be anything other than Bernadette Locke.

Last time Cal had a hyphenated small forward he was one shot away from a National Championship. Let’s hope MKG takes it one step farther than CDR!

What a class act, to go along with a lot of other class-act kids that have played for the Cats recently. Let’s see, Patrick Patterson, John Wall, Brandon Knight, and now Michael. It’s kids like these that make me proud to be a Cats fan. Even better, we have a roster full of other talented guys who are also first-rate young men.
