The Year of the Cardinal Continues

With a 2-1 over the #2 Vanderbilt Commodores this evening, the Louisville Cardinals have continued UL’s streak of athletic excellence this year and advanced to the College World Series. The feat makes Louisville the first school ever to win a national title in basketball, a BCS bowl game, and make the College World Series in the same year- not to mention their women’s basketball team’s runner-up finish in the national tournament and the men’s soccer team making the Elite Eight. It will be only the second trip ever to the CWS for the Cards, with the first taking place in 2007, and the Cards will open up the series with none other than the Indiana Hoosiers.

There’s no getting around it; this year’s Cardinal athletic teams are “getting it in” as the kids say. But you know what? Those baseball uniforms are still absolutely hideous.

Ouch guys. We went 2-10 in football, lost to Louisville, went to the NIT in basketball, lost to Louisville, didn’t make the tournament in baseball because of the “tough” SEC competition. Louisville won the Sugar Bowl against a team we haven’t beaten in 26 years. They won the National Championship and went to the College World Series beating the SEC’s best team on their own turf. I’d say Louisville is well above us right in every athletic category. Oh, but the Twins and stuff

No UL fan can answer this simple question: If UL is so great, then why did it take so long & why did no conference want them? Since this whole thing is about money; if the conference could make money off of them especially if their so great, then every conference should have been jumping all over UL to grab them up yet no one did. If it wasn’t for Maryland, UL would still be screwed; they were the last cleanest dirtiest shirt left standing. UL about to get one big reality check in basketball & especially football joining the ACC, so much so their fans are going to regret joining & paying the money having to watch their teams get thumped. If the NCAA comes back & declares Bridgewater ineligible over the Miami recruiting scandal, that is going to be hilarious.

LMAO at #58. Pissed off are we?

If you think the ACC is going to be tougher than the Big East in basketball you have not been paying much attention to college basketball the last several years. In the last 10 years 4 national champions have been from the Big East. More than any other conference. In the last 10 years there has only been two Final Fours that did not include a Big East team, and three of them had 2 Big East teams. I know a lot of uk fans don’t know squat about basketball other than how to say “go big blew”. In football you all say the same thing every time. When we went to the Big East from Conference USA we were going to get our butt kicked. What happened? Won it twice and won two BCS Bowl games. Every time we play an SEC team in a bowl game we are going to get our butt kicked. What happned? Kicked co-second place SEC Alabama’s ass in the Fiesta and SEC co-champ Florida’s butt in the Sugar.

And FYI, Bridgewater was completely cleared by the NCAA in the Miami scandal well over a year ago. Tough luck sucker.

Louisville is the hottest commodity in the college sports world right now, and is slinging the largest budget around in a high-major with a contract hinged on long-term stability. Were it not for the state of petrification the thought of having to compete with Louisville for conference crowns that Kentucky has to endure, and the ACC’s grant of rights agreement, an SEC invite would be forthcoming.

My Cardinal friend “Scorp” manages to leave out some key details in his rants, folks. Louisville spent 9 years in C-USA. In those 9 years, they could only manage 3 conference championships in football against absolutely horrible competition. The Cards then moved on to a slightly better football conference in 2005, that THEIR fans claimed they would dominate! In 8 seasons in the Big East, they’ve won ONE outright conference championship in football! In those 8 years, they’ve compiled the following records against some of the nation’s football “elite”: UConn (4-4); Cincy (4-4); Pitt (4-4); USF (4-4); Temple (1-0); Syracuse (5-3); and, Rutgers (5-3). The one quality program that UofL had to face in conference every year left after the 2011 season (WVU). Louisville’s record against the Mountaineers in 7 years:(2-5). So, this program that has been to 2 BCS Bowls since joining the Big East, has an amazing 29-27 conference record in 8 years! My math tells me that’s a winning percentage of 52%!! WOW!!!

Scorp also fails to mention that Cincinnati has also been to 2 BCS Bowls as a member of the BE; and, UConn has also been to a BCS Bowl!

As far as UofL against the SEC; yes, Louisville has had 2 wins over SEC opponents in bowl games (Alabama in the Fiesta Bowl; and now Florida in the Sugar Bowl). What Scorp does not tell you is that those 2 games are the Cards’ only victories against SEC schools not named Kentucky. Louisville is 2-20 against the SEC all time (4-18 if you want to count 2 games that they lost to Miss. State on the field, but State later had to forfeit).

Yes, my good pal Scorp will try to make you believe that Cardinal Football is some type of “juggernaut” because of 2 big wins in their history. But, the record speaks for itself, folks! The majority of the time when Louisville has faced quality competition on the football field, the Cards have come out on the short end! Lol!!!

    Well Scorp,

Why don’t you go into the details of the Louisville poor to mediocre history in football since you’re not going to enlighten us about Kentucky’s??? Since the majority of your football fans have only been following the program for about 20-25 years, they’d probably like a little history lesson on Cardinal Football!

Tell us about all of Louisville’s championships in football down through the decades! Tell us about all of the college football “titans” the Cards have taken on over the years! I mean, the list reads like a “Who’s Who” of college football powers”! Drake; Wichita State; Indiana State; Murray State; Chattanooga; West Texas State; William & Mary; Memphis; Dayton; Tampa; Tulsa; Boston U., and the list goes on and on!!

Tell us about the great conferences Louisville has been a member of over the years, like the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the OVC, the Missouri Valley, C-USA, etc.

Tell us about these great, “diehard” football fans that bail on the program at the first sign of trouble (do Ron Cooper and Steve Kragthorpe ring a bell??)

Tell us about the average Card fan, that shows up well after kickoff; spends the majority of their time during the game in the beer line; and, then leaves at the end of the 3rd quarter! Won’t the fans of schools like Florida State, Clemson, ND, VA Tech, etc., be surprised when they visit the “Pizza Pit” for the first time, and find that at any given point during the game, two thirds of the Cardinal fans are not even in their seats??? Lol!!!

Finally, tell us about a “hard-core” football fan base, whose team went 10-2 during the season, and ended up defeating Florida in Sugar Bowl, that somehow left over 20,000 seats empty for two home games, in a stadium that only seats 55,000.

Amazing how so many Cardinal fans, like yourself, can point out Kentucky’s struggles in football over the past 50-75 years, while conveniently omitting their own mediocre football past!

  82. History
    2:29 pm June 10, 2013 Permalink

History is all UK fans want to talk about, because at present; Louisville is blowing you, and every other program in the nation, unequivocally out of the water. Sugar Bowl Champs > Laughably 2-10. National Champions > laughably losing to Robert Morris in the first round of the NIT. Add in that Louisville has been more successful in baseball, soccer, women’s basketball, and even the olympic sports.. and well, it’s going to take you a while to get the taste of Louisville heels out of your mouths. The unparalleled success being enjoyed by your rivals must really add to the sting of UK mediocrity and downright terribleness that you’ve enjoyed as of late.

    # 81-LOL…here are the UL numbers for all 6 home games-55,386,55,334,53,334,50,167,53,271,44,609 =95% of seats filled so tell what games left 20,000 seats unfilled
UK 6 games average 32,905 49% seats filled
BTW we have owned UK in football since 1924 when we started playing as a NCAA school. So go back and enjoy your 1 sport school. UL has accomplished what no other BCS school has ever done: National Champs, Womens runner up, BCS Sugar Bowl, World Series…I could go on…

dsh if I have said it once I have said it 1000 times. U of L football is not about where it has been, it is about where it is going. You are raging about U of L not having any football history and you are ranting about something that everybody knows. What is your point? As I pointed out, UK has not done anything in football for 6 decades! Louisville fans know we are not a tradtional football power. We don’t care. It is what it is.

Since 91 we have a Fiesta Bowl trophy, an Orange Bowl Trophy and a Sugar Bowl trophy. Two of the three if those were won in blow outs of SEC teams that all the uk fans said were going to “destroy us” LMAO!!!! What has UK done in that time in football?

I went to all three of those bowls, and you ranting about U of L having no football tradition does not deminish my enjoyment of it one iota!

Stop living in the past. You are wasting time typing stuff everybody knows and only you care about.

The YEAR OF THE CARDINAL is NOW! In the prescious present, not in the past.

#83 We never had a single game with 20K seats empty. 8K+ empty for UConn was the worst game of the year. As you mention the rest of the games were over 95% full, or completely full.

Ironically I missed the UConn game myself because I was in…wait for it…Omaha! No joke.

dsh is a great guy, but like any uk fan his head explodes at the realization that U of L is far and away the dominate sports program in the Commonwealth now. It makes them sick to their stomachs that the school that dsh rightly points out came from obscurity, has blown right by them.

That just makes it all the SWEETER! Thanks dsh for pointing that out! LOL!

    Bob & Scorp,

Here you go, fellas!! Straight from the UofL Athletic website:

Temple game attendance: 44,609 (over 10,000 short of capacity)

UConn game attendance: 45,618 (almost 10,000 under capacity)

10,391 empty seats for Temple + 9,382 seats for UConn = 19,773 empty seats (that’s about 27 seats short of 20,000). Not sure what else to say!

Kentucky leads the overall series with Louisville, which began in 1912, not 1924, 14-11. Louisville leads, not owns, the modern day series that began in 1994, 11-8. Maybe if you had doubled the win total on Kentucky, you could say “owned”. But, you lead by just 3 games over a program you guys spend so much time trashing. Maybe you guys are not quite as good as you tell yourselves! Lol!!!

We both thought you meant 20k empty at two games each, not two games combined. uk had over 30K empty at EVERY GAME last season!
