Big Blue Nation is an amazing thing. While thousands of miles may separate the members of this fanbase when it comes time to unite Big Blue Nation does just that. Whether it’s to bash on some talking head, completely destroy on online poll, or to support a righteous cause there is no group in sports quite like the BBN. Today we witnessed that as the radio tour made their final stop in West Liberty. Back in March a tornado completely decimated the small town and the road to recovery has been arduous. Today hopefully that recovery was made a little bit easier.
The radio show today was top notch with just about every KSR legend calling in to give their support. That wasn’t all as the coaching staff joined in as well. Coach Phillips called in to talk about the damage and said they would be busing the Morgan county football team to the Western game this year. Coach Cal flew in to survey the damage and spoke to the need for help and pledged to match second hour donations up to $25,000. That number was reached before the end of the show. The world of sports has drawn us all together but it’s times like today when you see that BBN really is a family. You can still donate to the relief over the next couple of weeks by checking out WestLibertyRecovery.com.
Enough sappy stuff it’s time for some news and views:
-The big story out of today’s radio show was the announcement of an alumni game in just under a month at Rupp arena. The game is going to take place Sept. 15th with the proceeds going to charity. Coach Cal mentioned there were 23 NBA players from Kentucky who could potentially come back to play in the game which would give fans a great chance to see our former Cats. There is also the possibility of the ’96 team dropping in for a little exhibition. Which NBA Cat do you most want to see next month in Rupp?
-As I mentioned earlier Coach Phillips was on the radio show today and did not name a starting QB. Then following today’s practices he again did not name the starter instead opting to say ““There isn’t a timeline, it’s whenever I feel like it.”. I have a feeling we won’t know who the starter is going to be until the morning of Sept. 2nd.
-Speaking of Sept 2 the football season is only 2 weekends away! 16 days until the Cats take the field and the slowest off season in sports history comes to an end.
-Another interesting note following today’s practice was the mention of the fourth quarterback being redshirt. It will be intriguing to see if that happens and which of the freshman would get the extra year. One would have to assume it would be Patrick Towles as he was brought in to be the future of the QB position at UK. However good things have been said about Jalen Whitlow during the recent practices and it makes you wonder if the coaching staff would want to put their faith in him going forward.
– Andrew Wiggins could miss the McDonalds All-American game! Since the junior is taking the coursework necessary to graduate this year he would need to go ahead and reclassify in order to be eligible for the Mcdees game. Otherwise he could end up like Nerlens and be forced to sit out. While it really isn’t a big deal, fans would still enjoy seeing Wiggins go up against the top recruits in America. But if missing the game means he is arriving in Lexington a year early then it is a worthy sacrifice. I’m sure the Derby classic would have an open spot for him anyway.
Well that’s all the news and views I have. Corey Nichols and myself will be by tomorrow as news breaks across BBN. Again thanks to all the people who donated today to help out in West Liberty. It’s truly a great thing to help out a community that was devastated and still needs help. Again donations can be made at WestLibertyRecovery.com and every bit can help make a difference.
