The sports schedule is getting a little hectic. The NFL is in full swing. College football is entering the bowl season. High school, college, and pro basketball is running strong. To top it all off, the holidays are upon us. Mondays are good days to plan out your week and make sure you don’t miss any of the UK-related action.
–Finals Week – UK Students vs UK Professors – Various Campus Buildings: Ah Finals Week. The culmination of a semester’s worth of fancy book learnin’ distilled into one blitzkrieg brain dump to end the semester. There are going to be some bleary eyes, some tousled hair-dos, and some serious body odor permeating the campus this week. I haven’t been in school for nearly a decade and I still have that “OH MY GOD I HAVE A FINAL AND I HAVEN’T STUDIED” nightmare at least once a year. Let’s take this space to wish all the students, especially the athletes, luck on their exams.
–Women’s Volleyball – Final Four – St. Petersburg, Florida – ESPN2 – 7:00: I know our team didn’t make the Final Four, but I’m going to take this space to salute the amazing job the Women’s Volleyball team did this year. UK’s quest to make the Elite Eight fell just shy when the Cats ran into #3 Florida State and fell to the Seminoles 3-2 last Friday in Minnesota. The Wildcats end the year with an impressive 29-4 record and 5 ladies notching All-SEC honors. In particular, Sarah Rumely and Sarah Mendoza made the first team All-SEC while Lauren Rapp scored the All-Tournament team honors. The team had a great year that attracted the KSR crew and even produced a KSR Live Blog. Congrats to the team on a stellar season.
–Men’s Basketball – Austin Peay at Kentucky – CSS/TBD – 4:00: I’m putting this as a TBD because even though Comcast Sports South officially has the game, the hysteria surrounding this team might cause one of the major networks to pick up this game. And really, shouldn’t they? Wouldn’t you rather watch a team featuring Patrick Patterson and John Wall play any opponent over a macth-up like Western Kentucky vs. Louisville? How about UCLA vs. Notre Dame? Both those games will be on ESPN2 and CBS respectively. ESPN is showing a Michigan/Kansas game. I know Kansas is #1, but it isn’t like Michigan is *that* much better than Austin Peay. Patrick Barker will be along later in the week to channel his inner Lou Holtz and detail how UK might end up losing this game.
–Women’s Basketball – Louisville at Kentucky – BBSN/FSN – 1:00: BTI already made an excellent post regarding the UK Hoops team and their unreal season, so I don’t have too much to add. UK destroyed Florida A&M without one of their best players, Victoria Dunlap. Dunlap sat out the game due to a concussion she sustained in practice, but she should be able to go against the Cardinals. It should be noted that Kentucky remains the only D1 school in the country with both basketball teams sporting a perfect record. Of course, all of UK’s hard work has them ranked. . (looks up rankings). . .WHAT?! We aren’t ranked? In either poll? And U of L has more votes than us in the ESPN poll despite 3 losses? Seriously, BTI. You need to stop complaining about the BCS and get on top of this situation. Pronto.
–NFL – Raiders at Broncos – CBS – 4:05: It has been a tough year for Wildcats in the NFL. Some aren’t playing due to injury and others have been relegated to DNP status. The exception has been our man, Wesley Woodyard. Woodyard is consistently on the field and had 3 tackles last week in a loss to the Colts. The Raiders will most likely be forced to start turn over machine JaMarcus Russell after silver savior Bruce Gradkowski was injured last week against the Washington Jarmons.
Another light week due to final exams. Enjoy it because December gets real crazy real fast. Go Cats.
