The waiting game until South Carolina…

Now that the dust has settled on the underwhelming performance against Louisville on Sunday, the agonizing waiting game begins. The best way to avenge a disappointing loss is to replace the memory, or at least soften the blow of the memory, with something positive. The best thing that could happen to Kentucky football in the immediate future is a rallying point for not only the players, but the fans as well. Unfortunately, the schedule set up doesn’t provide much of an opportunity for a confidence-boosting rallying point anytime in the near future. Well, at least not until September 29th when South Carolina comes rolling into town.

Kentucky could very well sport a 2-1 record after 3 games. Wins against Kent State and Western Kentucky are certainly within reach. Kentucky is supposed to win those games though. If Kentucky plays well and destroys either or both of those teams– “that’s what SEC teams are supposed to do to Sun Belt and MAC teams.” If either game is close, negativity will continue to stir because, “SEC teams are supposed to crush Sun Belt and MAC teams.” If Kentucky happens to lose either of those games, talk of a rallying point almost becomes moot. A full on meltdown could be in the cards if Kentucky doesn’t find themselves sitting at 2-1 in the next two weeks.

If Kentucky’s offense shows well again against Kent State and Western Kentucky, it’s hard to compare the defensive resistance to that which they will face over the course of the rest of the season. If Kentucky’s defense puts out a positive performance (and boy do they ever need one…), it will be hard to get overly excited due to the level of competition. Questions will fly about whether or not the defense is actually improved, or the teams are just less explosive/talented on offense. Without question, positives can be taken from these games, but will they be convincing enough to hold people over?

Kentucky will have a hard time proving much in those 2 games, at least to the fans. And then…they travel to Florida. I’m not saying Kentucky can’t pull a major upset over a Florida team that is in a bit of a slump (by their standards) lately as well. If the game were being played in Lexington, I would feel more comfortable giving Kentucky a chance. The game will be played in the Swamp though, and that’s a place where Kentucky has not been able to muster a win in years. The odds are simply not in Kentucky’s favor.

Kentucky could provide fans with a glimmer of hope with a strong performance in the Swamp. Anything short of a win though won’t completely do the job.

Perhaps one of the most crucial 2-game stretches on Kentucky’s entire schedule comes when they host back-to-back SEC games in Lexington against South Carolina and Mississippi State. In the past, both of those teams have been potential SEC wins for Kentucky–especially when played at home. Winning either of those games would be huge for Kentucky’s chances of reaching 5 wins, or even more importantly, keeping the hopes of a bowl game alive.

So the question becomes, is there any scenario in which Kentucky could provide a rallying point or a major positive step until the South Carolina game? Is the amount of time until that game, 3 weeks, simply too long of a stretch to wait for the potential to see this Kentucky football team make big steps forward? I think the amount of time spent “waiting” will make that 2-game stretch with South Carolina and Mississippi State almost a “must win at least one” type of scenario for the Wildcats. Extending the waiting game another week beyond those games, or 2, or 3, or 4 would be difficult to rebound from, especially for the more restless portion of the fan base.

I’m concerned that we’re to the point of comparing ourselves to to teams in the Ohio Athletic Conference. I know Mount Union, Ohio Northern, BW, etc. are normally pretty good, but it’s still just Division 3.

I held out hope until Sunday! This team may not, without luck, win a single SEC game! They are not in shape and do not resemble any kind of SEC football. I like Joker, and have supported him, but it is time to move on!!

You obviously did not see the same team I did Sunday. A embarrassing attempt at playing the game we know as football.

What is up with KSR writers? Do you guys have no one on staff that knows anything about football…really? Waiting on the SC game? We will not win the next 2 games on our schedule…you should be “waiting” on the Samford game if you must look ahead like that…it could be our only win. You are correct on one thing…even if we do somehow win the next 2, we still do not belong in the SEC with Joker running the program. If you brought in Peterson from Boise St, with our current roster, he would win at least 3 SEC games this year. The man knows how to coach, and his players play inspired football for him.

Okay I understand that you, the writers are afraid to post anything bad about UK for fear of losing access. And I understand your egos will demand that you deny that happens too. I really do understand. We’re all men of the world here. But please, for the love of God, quit peeing on us and telling us it’s raining. This is one of the reasons Joker is in such hot water. He has flat out misrepresented what is going on with the football team for 3 years now. “Morgan Newton will be unrecognizable” That was actually a true statement in that Newton was supposed to be a D1 quarterback. And as history proved he was unrecognizable as a D1 quarterback. “The defensive line is the strength of our team” Again, quite literally the thruth. They were the strength of a porous mound of goo that was supposed to be a defense, but was actually more akin to walking through a Christoph In the Park display.(you walk around with a dazed look on your face, and don’t actually touch anything.)**

So just tell us the straight news. That’s all we really want. Save the smoke blowing for the tractor pulls in Freedom Hall.

** I call a homerun on that one. Walk around shot.**

Joker must go. And if he doesn’t soon, then Barnhart needs to go too! Both are embarassing UK. If the basketball team hadn’t won the title this year, the fans would be even more upset. I am predicting 25,000 empty seats at Commonwealth this week.

  11. Outsource football writers
    6:19 pm September 4, 2012 Permalink

Seriously, you have got to start doing better analysis for football games or outsource the writing to someone further south. The entire 2nd paragraph is filled with fluff similar to the stuff we read this summer that went like this…”well UK has had a hard time beating Florida in the swamp, but I have the faith and we just ended the UT streak so I think we have a good chance and the odds are on our side” (see paragraph 3 of the current article) or “weve got a better than 50% shot at UT, despite the fact its in Knoxville. UT’s glory days are over…” or wait here is a great example from this piece “In the past, both of those teams (MS State, South Carolina) have been potential SEC wins for Kentucky—especially when played at home”. So what? Whose to say the history holds? Wheres an analysis of the CURRENT position matchups, offensive stats, defensive stats, key players, etc. Had anyone with half a brain done this over the summer they would have seen the glaring holes in the linebacker corps that we all got a first hand taste of on Sunday.

A better analysis would look at Florida’s team versus our team, and heres a little hint…what does Florida have on offense to go against the UK defense because despite Florida’s “struggles”? Anyone who watches college football knows the defense is still good. The UF offense v. UK defense is the key…now go try again.

Despite wasting 2 minutes of my day reading an article that sounds like one of my 5th graders penned, the thing that irked me the most was the fact Kent State apparently plays in the OAC, when for years, I thought they played in the MAC. I feel dumb for not knowing that fact.

    11. UT’s glory days are over???…did u watch them demolish N.C.Sate??…they showed some big and quick strike capability and looked to me like they might be back or better than last cou ple of yrs….and you think we have better than a 50% shot at them this year on their turf??…you are showing ur collective intelligence. We are worse this year and they are better…how do u figure??….or what have u been smoking??

Let’s be honest, there is only one lock on UK’s schedule this year and that’s Samford. Kent State is a probable win, but I’d only give that game to UK 65% of the time (depending on which way Kent State runs the ball). WKU is going to be a game where I think that UK is going to surprised at the outcome, and not in a good way.

It’s great that the offense looked good Sunday, but then again Louisville’s defense didn’t put up too much of a fight like we’ll see for the rest of the year. I’m sure that the next two games will be similar on that side of the ball, but the defense that UK puts out there has to improve. The half tackles that they threw against Louisville were a joke and getting beat on every third down just can’t keep happening.

I don’t want to wish ill against Joker because this is his career that we’re talking about, but something’s got to change. Either he needs to step it up with the coaches he has surrounding him or he’s got to step aside. UK could one day actually be competitive, but the thought of that happening this year is the furthest thing from reality that we could discuss. C’mon KSR writers, either write something that makes sense or just hang it up until basketball season where your ignorance isn’t as noticeable because UK is winning a large percentage of their games.

13 MIKE – Learn to read. He said we spent the whole summer reading articles like that. As in articles written this summer by KSR writers saying things like UT’s glory days are over etc.

Please don’t blast people if you aren’t intelligent enough to read an comprehend what was written. I think 11 has a great point that the football analysis on KSR is routinely awful and filled with fluff. No one takes a real look at the game and match ups and discusses them intelligently.

Although I’m sure we will get a hard hitting piece from Mrs Tyler Thompson that is titled something like “Who are the 10 funniest UK fans at football games?” or “Kent St Bingo” or “It’s your Saturday tailgate: Pork or Chicken”. Horrible.

  18. Matt's Interview
    7:04 pm September 4, 2012 Permalink

I especially loved Matt’s interview with Joker when he was going to ask the tough questions. You know like “Can you win an SEC title here?” Good one. What coach in his right mind is going to say no? How about asking is the program better than when you took it over? If he says “yes” you follow with then why haven’t we been successful in getting wins and moving forward? If he says “no” then you can ask what do you think the cause of that is?

That interview was a hard hitting as Glamour interviewing Barry Obama

NO ONE on KSR will EVER print the TRUTH about Yew Kay Football. Hell,Matt Jones can’t come out from under his Mamas skirt long enough to write anything that resembles REALITY.

In reading many of the preious posts…I cannot disagree that 1.) KSR has totally turned-in to a ‘homer’; 2.) Joker’s a nice guy – but, not an SEC caliber coach; 3.) Barnfart needs to leave w/Joker; 4.) Kent State & Western games aren’t going to ‘tell’ us anything, and, 5.) we’re going to get embarrassed in the “Swamp” (been there many times and left discouraged each time). Time for a change…AD & Head Football Coach – NOW!

Reality,Cobble and Rumph are dismal D linemen, there are few is any legitimate linebackers, and d-banks are completely missing in action. So any improvements on the defensive side will truly be a major miracle.

No joke intended, but I feel that WKU will win in two weeks. I saw them play Saturday and even though they played Austin Peay, they beat them the way a superior team should. Last year, two missed passes by Jakes could have been the difference. I hope UK wins because a loss would be the end of Joker.

I agree. Just a silly article. Louisville is probably the 9th best team we will play this year, Ally, and you think we can beat a Top 10 South Carolina team? Also, you like our chances at home against Florida. Don’t you know we haven’t beaten them at home since 1979? Please do a little research or have somebody older proofread before you post.

Are you high? This team might beat Mississippi State. They have no chance of winning another conference game. 3-9. Does anyone have Mike Leach’s phone number?
